RIP Dwayne McDuffie

Don't know If this has been posted but I wanted to do a thread dedicated to the memory to one of the best comic writers I have read. The man saved and renewed my intertest in comics when he Reginald Hudlin and several other started Milestone Media back in the 90's

I know he is more known for his main runs with DC and Marvel and writing several animated shows and movies but I will always remember his milestone characters. I am glad they finally made it into the mainstream DC universe and hope they will be used well. I also hope his estate keeps the rights to them.

The new version of Static is supposed to start in may. I was going to pick it up anyway but now it just became even more special.

RIP miastro(sp) you will be missed.

I'm definitely shocked and saddened by this news. Dwayne McDuffie was a great creator and an inspiration. Coming up as a young African American, I loved comics but didn't see a lot of people who looked like me in them. In a way it was like I was an outsider looking in. If I was lucky I might get a sidekick or a token character, but when Milestone Comics came out, it was a watershed moment for comic book diversity.

Milestone featured all types of characters, many that looked like me, that I could relate to in a way that quite frankly I couldn't relate to Spider-Man or Superman or Batman, etc. And Milestone presented black characters, as well as others, in starring roles. These characters were diverse, they were often three-dimensional, and they felt relevant. I also think Milestone went a long way to showing the common thread of humanity in many of its depictions. Some of these characters might look, talk, or dress differently than the 'norm' (i.e. whites), but many had the same problems, confronted the same kinds of challenges, as their white counterparts. However, many did it with a cultural sensitivity or awareness often overlooked by the mainstream books. It's a shame that what was started with Milestone, or enhanced by its line, hasn't been fully replicated since.

McDuffie would go on to continue earning my admiration with his work on the Justice League cartoon. He made the Justice League, and by extension DC comics, pretty cool beyond Batman and Superman. I'm not as familiar with this Ben 10 work, but from what few episodes I've seen I think he brought the same kind of fun and quality to that franchise as well.

He will truly be missed.
