Rewatching Voyager

I did this with the original Star Trek earlier this year and I wanted to do the same with Voyager. It's been a while since I've seen the entire series and there is a lot of it that I've forgotten. I actually made it a priority to rewatch Voyager this year, more than any other trek.

I'm looking forward to this rewatch. I'm actually watching The Cloud now, which is a pretty decent episode. I'm looking forward to getting to the third season and the 7 of 9 years. It will be fun to watch episodes like Futures End, Scorpion, and a lot of season 6 again.

Neelix is damn annoying in these early episodes. Reminds me a little of Bashier.

I actually picked it up again tonight with Eye of the Needle and Ex Post Facto.

Eye of the Needle is really a downer episode, considering it was an episode that started out with a lot of hope. It ended basically with one down note after the other. I get it was early in the series for any kind of hope for the crew, but man I didn't realize how depressing it kinda was. The only member of the crew it wasn't depressing for was The Doctor, and here we go with Kes standing up for the Doctor when no one else would. This is why early Kes is a good character. She doesn't care who is who. She will respect and like everyone as if they were all her friends.

Ex Post Facto is interesting to me in that there was a great idea in here. What if the punishment was reliving the murder for the rest of your life. The only issue I have with it was the whole thing with the Dog. I think it was pretty obvious that Tom was innocent, but did it have to come down to the Dog?

Here's a Theory

Needless to say, I love both episodes (I only hate FURY, I like anything else VOY). However, I also didn't like the dog but for a very different reason: you can actually see that the guy who turns out to be the culprit encourages the dog with his hand to jump on him ... :brickwall:
This could have been done a bit better, I think.

Was this almost the reverse Trouble with Tribbles effect? In that episode, the tribble reacted negatively to Darvin. Here, the dog reacted positively to the culprit (Already forgot his name). I know hindsight is 20/20, but that seems really predictable to me. I just wish the Dog wasn't actually involved.

'Eye of the Needle' was one of the better episodes, in my opinion. It combined a lot of great plot elements, including the Romulan's contribution and the time travel angle. I have to admit that when I first saw this one (and when I saw it again and again) I was taken aback when I saw the end, when Tuvok reveals that Dr. Telek R'Mor was not only from the past, but had died before he could deliver the crew's messages. It was a unique and innovative way to end the story.
This is one of, if not the best, episode in the 1st season.

I'm not saying it's a bad episode. I love this episode too for many reasons (One of which is Vaughn Armstrong is the man), but it's interesting how the episode shifts focus from don't get your hopes up to this is not going to work at all. That's a bit of a downer for Voyager.

If there was one thing I thought Voyager did pretty well it was how it dealt with Death. Just saw Emanations and while it wasn't a great episode I still found it interesting. It did feel a bit convenient at the end with Janeway talking about how the bodies floated to the Rings. Would have liked a more ubiqutious ending.

Now watching Prime Factors. Gath acts like a creep but it was cool how Tucok tries to get the devise and not one of the Maquis.

PRIME FACTORS is my second favourite episode in Season 1 (after CARETAKER). I call it the "yellow episode" - just look at one of my desktop wallpapers:

State of Flux is still probably Season 1's second or third best episode. This is the start of the Seska/Mage Cullah arc and it's an arc I really enjoyed throughout the first two seasons. I kind of wish the relationship between Seska and Chakotay was developed a little more earlier, but I think it worked for me here because of this Chakotay Quote: "You were working for her, she was working for the Cardassians, was anyone on that ship working for me". Chakotay really did have a lot more personality in the early going, which I appreciated.

Have you finished Season 1 yet? I love LEARNING CURVE - it's such a funny episode.
Plus, for some obscure reason I like their silver uniforms. They look very good in them.

No not yet. It's been a busy week and I've been a little sick. I will finish it soon though.

Emanations was one of my favorite episodes of the season. I haven't watched it in at least 10+ years. Might give it a look soon.

Heroes and Demons

We have another episode where we see The Doctor take a step toward bring an actual member of the crew. Despite it being a holodeck gone mad type episode I've always really enjoyed it, mainly because of Picardo. Even in season one, we were already getting hits on how great a character arc the doctor would have. I just wish he had kept the name. It might have been an emotional experience that ended a bit tragically, but there was some good there and they could always bring her back.

Also, I didn't know this but the girl who played Fria was also in Babylon 5. That's cool.

HEROES AND DEMONS was a lovely episode.

I liked how Janeway made the Doctor understand that he'd been part of a First Contact scenario even though it happened in an unusual way. I also liked Harry's puzzled facial expression when he got back having no idea where he had been.

Also, since I studied English literature at university, I liked the idea of the Beowulf poem being turned into a holographic adventure.

On to CATHEXIS then. Chakotay and the medicinal wheel. Another interesting episode.

I just started rewatching too! I just watched S2 E1. Rewatching the series has opened up my eyes in a few ways. Especially in the way of Kes, she is so instrumental in the development of the doctor her niavety to his technology is the instagator of his development really interesting to pick up on that! And yes Heroes and Demons what a great show to see the doctors development and the reading of it to see it as a first contact situation was extremely interesting as you pointed out above.

I must say I really don't like Emanations xD It didn't quite keep me engaged. Favortie episodes are: Time and Again, Heroes and Demons, Cathexis, Jetrel and learning curve because it's hilarious. All of the other episodes I find good apart from Emanations but there just my favorites.

Tell me when you get to season 2 episode 2 maybe we could keep along track with each other and discuss as we go?

I'm almost done with Season 1. Maybe try to finish it this week.

Cathexis

This episode reminded me a lot of TNG's Lonely Among Us. You had a nebula, an "presence" going from host to host to control what the crew does, and it leads to putting an alien energy lifeform back into a nebula. It was decent I guess, but it was also a little dull. Also, this is the episode that introduced Janeway's creepy holodeck program so that's something against it.

Faces

Now this is one of my top 3 favorite episodes of Season 1. I've always been fascinated by Be'lanna and her journey from someone who always had to fight with herself to a well grounded but powerful woman who ended up having a baby girl with Tom Paris. This episode deals with her human and klingon halves being at odds and I really liked what it said about the sum of the individual parts are greater as a whole rather than as many smaller traits. I do hate that we are introduced to Durst in the previous episode only to kill him off here. Also, this is another Vidiian story and I loved the Vidiians.
