Rewatching Enterprise

Although I'm only about half way through season one, the crew seem to be real people to me. Warm, friendly, angry, hurt, defensive. They seem like a real group of people trying to get along, warts and all. It's very likeable and very easy to get into.
Have you continued?

Hi. Yes, today I watched 'Acquisition', Season 1, episode 19.

Although I originally watched the first two seasons of 'Enterprise' many years ago, I must have missed this particular episode as I have no recollection of it. What a gem of an episode it is! The Ferengi, previously seen by me in various TNG and DS9 episodes, return to render almost the entire crew of Enterprise unconscious while they scavenge and steal away anything they can get their hands on.

With the crew of the Enterprise asleep this episode has a very different dynamic, with a tiny handful of crew members stealthily and covertly attempting to sabotage the Ferengi by using their own paranoid psychology to turn them against each other.

I really enjoyed this one, it feels different and fresh to the other types of story presented so far this season. Trip, the Captain and T'pol are the three main characters of Enterprise and they carry this story perfectly. I could watch anything with these three in it - they are superb and the main reason I enjoy Enterprise so much.

I like this one too. It's a light hearted comedy type episode. The Ferengi are all fun to watch, especially the main one. And it was fun to watch Archer go on about his gold.

"It's a lower lifeform you idiot! Probably the captains next meal."

Poor Porthos

I really liked this episode I liked seeing Jeffrey Combs playing a Ferengi again. Archer, Trip and T'Pol tricked the Ferengi about a gold vault was clever and fun. It was nice to see Porthos in this show. I like seeing Porthos in this show.

Tuned into my Netflix last night to continue my rewatch of Season 4
"Home" next up
But Netflix didn't work for me, for fuck knows what reason
Not pleased, hope it's not a permanent glitch

Delta Vega I hope you can keep watching Enterprise .It really sucks when there's some kind of technical computer glitch. I hope you can see it again asap!

"Home"

Our heroes have returned home to Earth and are rightly lauded by the gathered masses at Star Fleet HQ, although the 2004 CGI looks decidedly silly.
Archer accepts the adulation but points to the fact that 27 crew members were killed and that they are the true heroes.
Later we see Archer meet up with Captain Hernandez of Columbia, in a bar as he tries to find some time alone. She informs him that things are very different on Earth now.
"Earth is holding it's breath"
T'Pol makes plans to return to Vulcan, and offers Trip the chance to accompany her, and seeing as his hometown no longer exists, and he has no family, he accepts.
We see an interesting scene with Columbia in spacedock, with final work being carried out, Archer is on board with Hernandez and tells her she will need every weapon upgrade being installed.
At the mission debriefing, there is hostility from the Vulcans specifically over the Selaya incident, and Archer's angst surfaces as he defends his actions while butting heads with Savol.
Meanwhile, Phloxx prepares to go down to Earth with his micro menagerie but Reed asks him if he is hesitant, due to Earth now being increasingly xenophobic towards once accepted alien species.
Archer is ordered to take some R and R and opts to go climbing, he's joined by Hernandez.
On Vulcan, Trip is introduced to T'Pol's rather rude mother, who it transpires has retired from the Vulcan Science Academy unbeknown to her daughter.
Her mother informs her that her (T'Pol) ex fiancé is on the scene.
Quick cut to Archer being in cynical mode while rock climbing, bemoaning the things he's done, the things that a future colleague may have to do.
After an 0400 rise on Vulcan, Trip is pig in the middle to some breakfast politics between mom and daughter.
He ends up being drafted as a handyman around the home.
(Would a Vulcan scientist not be able to fix her own appliances, or is she just using his skills and having a chance to suss him out ?)
Reed, Mayweather and Phloxx are out drinking in a bar, Reed is signing autographs for two rather wooden, stooge bimboes, and a rather belligerent local interrupts.
Here we have the first incident of xenophobia that the crew have witnessed first hand, and you've got to say, even though this guy and his crew are ungrateful bastards for being still alive, there is some merit to the thinking that Star Fleet is playing a dangerous game by openly introducing Earth to multiple hostile species while the plebs on Earth have no say.
A bar brawl ensues, and abrubtly ends when Phloxx puffs his face up in a panic reaction, quite funny.
As Trip tries to soften up mom on Vulcan, he's rumbled, she knows he and T'Pol are an item, and now Kos, the fiancé has paid a visit.
He wants to marry his betrothed as is his right, she isn't too happy about it but he's stubborn, there's a surprise, he offers to help T'Pol's mom in return for her hand in marriage, seems that mom was in fact, fired.
She eventually relents.
Her mom's dismissal was due to T'Pol's involvement in the P'Jem incident.
After Archer informs Hernandez about the pitfalls of deep space, they retire for the night, Archer dreams and is thrown to his death by three Xindi Reptillians, he wakes up before he falls to the ground of course.
His head is a mess, he harbours regrets and insecurities, has he a death wish ?
They kiss, and it later transpires that they used to be an item.
On Vulcan, Trip is getting the tour, but T'Pol uses the travelogue to dump him for Kos, all so she can get her mom reinstated. Poor Trip.
Phloxx, back in sickbay with Hoshi, turns down a chance to visit a famed Chinese Restaurant they had always planned to go to.
Seems he is a bit spooked by the bar incident.
Back at HQ, the debriefing ends, Archer and Savol have some making up to do.
The Vulcan in fact actually approves of Archer's "do what he had to do" attitude, they shake hands and Savol thanks him.
On Vulcan, Trip dresses for the wedding, mom seems a lot nicer now and asks why he hasn't objected seeing as its obvious he loves T'Pol.
He politely declines to muddy the waters.
The episode raps with a the beginnings of the wedding ceremony, a conflicted and emotional T'Pol kisses Trip and carries on with the ceremony.
This is a nice reflective episode that has to be used as a counterbalance for the madness of Season 3's frantic finale, it's closure for the first forays into space by Enterprise, its an episode that attempts to tie loose ends but only opens more doors, and the slow pace belies the future pace of upcoming grief in Season 4.

Watched Season 1 episode 20 'Oasis'.

Another enjoyable episode that I didn't remember. I was surprised that only the father and daughter were real, and the rest of the crashed vessel are holograms. I thought they were some strange new lifeforms.

This first season so far has very much been about cramped dark corridors, flash lights, shadows and bags of atmosphere. At times is almost as if it's been like the opening titles of the X-files!

"Borderland"

The episode begins with a Klingon vessel under attack from a small ship they had seemingly "rescued", the perpetrators of the attack appear to be enhanced humans with super strength and agility.
The ship is taken mercilessly.
On Earth, Archer is taken to a high security facility to meet Dr Arik (?) Soong, who is a super genius with arrogance by the spadeload. Soong is allowed to work his theories in his cell on paper, but is denied access to technology due to a previous escape attempt.
You have to ask why he would still be allowed to carry on his work at all if he's such a danger.
It transpires he's a eugenics engineer. The humans who took the Klingon ship jettisoned their victims into space but left their DNA on the bodies which has been traced to Soong.
He was responsible for the theft of a significant amount of augmented embryos, from the Eugenics War, that matched the DNA signatures, over 20 years ago, from the high security facility dealing with deadly diseases at Cold Station 12.
Soong had raised the augmented humans as his own but now claims not to know of their whereabouts.
Enterprise has been charged with finding the augments before the Klingons have a chance to engage in war with Earth.
They will have to cross into the Borderlands, a disputed area of space between the squabbling Orions and Klingons.
On the stolen Klingon ship it's clear that there is a power struggle between the augmented humans, there is tension between second in command Malek, and Rakin the leader, who did not sanction the killing of the Klingons nor the taking of their ship.
Trip tries to enquire about T'Pol's honeymoon but she's evasive.
Enterprise heads into deep space with Soong on board, in the hope he can persuade the augments to give up, but can he be trusted ?
At the onset of the journey, Archer presents T'Pol with a gift as a welcome to Star Fleet, it's a very touching scene.
Phlox and Soong examine the augment DNA in sickbay, Phlox declares he is impressed with the technology, and is surprised that it's 20th Century Earth technology, but Soong smugly admits that he had added his own technology and enhancements to the embryos.
Phlox strongly disapproves.
Enterprise now comes under attack from Orion Raiders, nine crewmen including T'Pol are beamed from the ship.
According to Soong they will most likely be traded as slaves, he of course knows where they will be taken to.
Meanwhile, Malek plots against Rakin by making moves on his woman, Persis.
On the Orion processing station, the experience of T'Pol is the only solace for a panicking rookie crewman.
As Archer and Soong now beam down to the market, T'Pol is first to be sold, for a good price, and she is taken to a holding cell.
Archer has located all his people including T'Pol, but can't beam them out due to restraints on their necks which render transport impossible.
He has to have some Tritanium Cobalt sent from the ship to bribe the guards and nullify the restraints (on the advice of Soong)
He tells T'Pol to bide her time and gets panicky guy back on board from his holding cell after he has been sold.
Rakin and Malek have their moment, all the augments side with Malek in his coup, including the duplicitous Persis, and Malek kills Rakin for being weak.
Archer returns with Soong to retrieve his crewmembers, and despite being rumbled, he manages to get his crew beamed back on board due to their restraints being nullified, not before T'Pol beats up her captor guard during the escape confusion.
In the melee Soong gets away, burns out the transponder that Phlox had put in his neck to stop him beaming away, and tries to disappear in the crowd.
Archer manages to reactivate Soong's magnetic cuffs and recaptures him, before getting back to Enterprise.
Now, in the Brig, Soong tries to make the case for his "children" the augments, but Archer is not having it, and puts it to Soong that he knew the ship would be attacked by Orions.
T'Pol now tells Trip that instead of honeymooning she went to Mt Seleya to meditate.
Again, the Orion Raiders attack the ship, but another ship intervenes and chases the Orions off, it's a Klingon ship, but the human augments are on board.
Malek confronts Archer on board Enterprise, he demands the release of their "father" Soong.
He grabs Archer by the throat and threatens to kill him, he's too quick for Reed and security, meanwhile the rest of the augments overpower the MACOs at the airlock, and come on board to effect the rescue of Soong.
They disable the ship and get away, after some goading from Soong to Archer.
Soong now assumes command of his "children" and says he they have thousands more embryos to activate on Cold Station 12.
Although surely the first question Soong should have asked is "Where is Rakin?"
A chilling ending, and so far Soong and his children have shown no redeeming features, and it could be their arrogance and hubris which will be their undoing.
But not yet.
Brent Spiner guested as Soong of course, wrestler Big Show as the Orion guard, who lifted T'Pol up to the gathered crowd as she was sold.
Made me realise just how small Jolene is.
Not a great episode, but an episode that builds as part of a trilogy, and things promise to get even more fucked up.

Ohh, before I forget, want to add some thoughts about "Home"..

One of my main critics about ENT is that they have to show us "home front" . How did politics react to some events? How did media react, how did normal citizens react? After Xindi attack and not so helpful Vulcans, it was expected that the people become "xenophobic" , but how was the political climate before Xindi? "Still tax payer" people paid for excursion but not even media cared about so historical first voyage?

I didn't get also why Trip didn't visit his family or even take a contact with them. How was the journey to Vulcan? Why Kos (and his family) still wanted this marriage? What was their profit? Were they also Syrrannites?
The episode gave me more questions as answers.

It was time for Archer to face with his new persona. I think figure "Capt. Erika Hernandez" was ok, but I am not very convinced about the talent of actress. Maybe she needed more scenes to show what she can.
And yes it was very very sad about Trip and T'Pol. I knew somehow they wouldn't made them happy, but it was very sad way to make them unhappy.

Re "Home", I agree that it had more questions than answers
I even alluded to this when I said "This is a nice reflective episode that has to be used as a counterbalance for the madness of Season 3's frantic finale, it's closure for the first forays into space by Enterprise, its an episode that attempts to tie loose ends but only opens more doors, and the slow pace belies the future pace of upcoming grief in Season 4."

peoplesvoice, thanks for your continued thoughts about the episodes, always interesting! You remind me of things I saw or felt when I first watched the show. Like totally falling for the surprise in Oasis about the hologram crew. And yes, the creepy dark stuff! Flashlights! You are totally right about the X-Files feel.

Delta Vega, my review for Home can be boiled down to: T'Plot Device derails T/T for the entire season. There's some other stuff in there, but I was kinda blinded by the immense cowardice of the decision to bail on T/T, after all the buildup of Season 3. Sadly, Trek writers have never been very good at meaningful, adult romance. :sigh: p.s. to sekundant: Thank goodness for fanfic, it fills in so many of the blanks. :)

And DV, I love your conclusion of Borderland: "Things promise to get even more fucked up." :guffaw:

In the ongoing augment trilogy, I really took a pathological dislike to Brent Spiner and his sneering face, the arrogance and delusion portrayed in his character.
I regarded Data as TNGs only saving grace, I hated the show, but as Soong I began to dislike the actor playing the part.
Maybe I'm being a trifle harsh.
Regarding the T/T romance, it did seem rather odd that after building the tension over Season 3 till they eventually got together, that the writers would tie themselves in knots with ways for them not to be compatible.
Very puzzling.
