Remember back when the writers were called lazy for not being original

Re: Remember back when the writers were called lazy for not being orig

Aren't we past the point where this "point" is an actual point? What's next, is someone going to make a thread just to make the point that the sky is blue?
It's a much finer point than simply "fans will criticize everything"...

...in 2006 the criticism was that any prequel by its very nature is lazy writing because it will be a re-telling a pre-existing charcater history. However, in 2009 we are told the writers are lazy because they did NOT simply re-tell the pre-existing character history, but instead changed them.

This movie was hardly original.
It doesn't need to be...it just needs to be enjoyable (and it was).

I understand how not all people can like all films the same way, but I can't imagine how someone would not have a smile on their face while watching this movie. Have people lost the ability to enjoy the simple pleasures in life like a good old-fashioned fun movie?

This movie was fun...let your hair down...enjoy yourself and stop thinking that Star Trek movies are supposed to be serious science fiction. The fun Star Trek films are the best ones. The (pseudo) serious science fiction ones are quite dull.

...fast forward to now, and this film has a totally original story, but now the writers are being criticized as being too lazy to have written a story that fit nicely into the pre-existing TOS world and used all the pre-existing TOS rules.
"totally original story" ...you're kidding, right? Partially rehashed characters (the convenient parts) and an insane villain who wants to destroy the planet Earth... that's never been done... in Star Trek... in the last 10 years...

Yeah -- I admit "original story" was the wrong phrase -- I was talking about the newly created universe -- the "big picture" in which this new Star Trek franchise will reside, not simply the plot of the movie.

I went into it with an open mind. I really did. But it just was nothing special to me. Maybe im getting old. I dont know. I have seen many scifi/fant movies, read many scifi/fant stories and seen many scifi/fant tv shows. Nothing surprises be anymore in that genre. Maybe Im bored of that type of entertainment in general.:( I think the last fantasy films that really surprised me and gave me a sense of awe were the Lord of the Rings films. I hadnt read the books so I went into them with no knowledge at all. But no fantasy movies since have surprised me like that. NOT to say I havent enjoyed any films lately. I seem to be enjoying more serious character pieces like Gran Torino. which of course is non scifi.

^^That's fine. That sounds like a fair and honest opinion (although one that I don't agree with ;))

I like serious films, too (TWoK is the only Star Trek film is on my "Top 25" list), but I also like fun films. In my mind no Star Trek movie is an "important film", but not everything I personally enjoy needs to be "important". Sometimes I just want to have a good time. I did have a good time with this movie.

Different kinds of films effect different parts of me. There is definitely a place in this world -- and a place in my brain -- for "simply fun" films. The same for books -- I like to read J.D. Salinger, but I also like to read the absurdly funny "Jeeves and Wooster" stories by P.G. Wodehouse.

It won't make my list of "great films", but It felt good to watch it.
