Refit Enterprise Torpedo bay - Launcher

Do we even know how many tubes the TOS ship has?

Fanon aside, of course.

Going off of TOS, I'd say... 1. Adding ENT/IAMD to that, I'd say... 2 or 3.

We know from "Journey to Babel" that it's possible to order "photon torpedoes 2, 4 and 6" to be fired forward in a single volley. That sort of suggest that there are (at least) six forward tubes, although we could also postulate that a single tube fired the torps in quick succession. From "Elaan of Troyius" we know that forward torpedo tubes can be referred to in plural, though. And ENT "IaMD" establishes an aft tube, at least for NCC-1764 (which may be an upgunned model, though).

Having six ENT-style tubes would be rather logical for the TOS ship, I guess.

There may be multiple tubes (where the torpedos are charged) feeding into two launchers. Tubes one, three and five feed the starboard launcher while two, four and six feed the port.

Which would be yet another handy explanation for the TWOK gaffe.

Of course, where those extra tubes would go is beyond me...

Why is the torpedo exhaust system located a deck above the torpedo launchers, why have the exhaust system anyway?

I don't put much weight to the torpedo exhaust idea - but that part of the neck might not be a bad place for some aft-pointing rockets when one thinks of it. Some charring there might be well in order, to indicate the presence of heavy duty maneuvering thrusters or somesuch. Perhaps even engines for the secondary hull, after the saucer has been separated (not for flying around, E-D style, but for propelling the secondary hull far enough from the saucer that it could be safely detonated).

Get rid of the torpedo exhaust system completely and just add another 2 torpedo bays and launchers aft of the forward bays and launchers.
