I think it's that whole shoot the messenger thing. It's not just RLM (who I openly admit to being oblivious of until this thread). There is a tendency to dislike a person for the opinion they have on a subject, even if that subject is a fictional work.

There's more to content than what is on the surface and understanding the layers of meaning is important.
Someone saying "I don't like TLJ", for instance, can mean a great many things because there are many possible underlying questions and reasons for such a statement, not all of which correlate to what someone overtly presents or even are willing to admit to themselves. Often you can hear (or read) what someone is claiming as a rationale but it's clear on a human level that there's more there, which leads you to challenge the claim.
Personally I can vehemently defend my views for example. That is all I feel required to do
Trying to change someone else's? That doesn't feel like my place and believe me when I say I am conversant with being in an environment with a number of people/fans who hold opinion contrary to my own. I actually appreciate the inner truths that are reflected in opinion, even when quite often I disagree. It's raw and honest, lol. Challenging it implies I think I'm better equipped to have formed it. Well I am
