Perhaps the changeling considered it not worth the risk to try something that would have injured or killed Sisko.

I mean, if the Dominion was confident enough that they would win in the long run, they probably figured that the changeling might as well do his best work anyway. And the changeling probably DID have the medical knowledge it needed to play Bashir convincingly...

Bashir has mentioned other doctors on staff. Definitely post season 4, when he was promoted to full Lt. Given that there were about 1,000 - 2,000 people stationed there at any given time, there is no way he could be the only doctor.

It's interesting, Wikipedia speaks about '300 permanent residents', Memory alpha mentions a crew between 300 and 2,000. If both of these statements are true, there must have been a significant variability in crew size and most postings would have been fairly short-term in the first place (I would call someone who is posted there for 2 years a 'resident' but I'lll agree that's subjective. Unless, of course, there is a strict separation between 'residents' and 'crew' and we're talking 300 permanent residents and a crew of 300 minimum size). Anyway, I have no idea how many doctors you'd realistically need for either 300 or 2,000 people. It's entirely possible Bashir mentions other doctors on service; I just don't recall any instances.

As for not doing any harm to Sisko. I think the founders figured that the operative could do more useful work staying undetected for a while longer, and that they'd always have the opportunity to off Sisko at some point in the future, should they really want to.

Crusher defiinitely wasn't the only doctor on the Enterprise, and that ship had 1,000 people.

DS9 not only had a station crew, but a civilian population. Not to mention any medical issues needed for docked ships.

Nothing the changeling could have done before that point would have wiped out the Federation, Klingon and Romulan fleets. Why endanger the big victory to get smaller ones?

So throughout this episode Captain Sisko wears his Starfleet badge incorrectly.

None of the other regular characters do this, only Sisko.

Was this scripted symbolism, or was Avery Brooks just fucking with the continuity people that week?

Is it incorrect? Is badge height specified in Starfleet uniform code? Is there no room for personal preference?

Just thinking about Sisko’s situation at this point…. he was Bajor’s spiritual leader, a Starfleet officer, the station administrator, a military commander, Jake’s father, and Kasidy’s lover….seems like a bigger load than any other Star Trek captain carried. Not sure anyone in human history ever had that combination of responsibilities…and so many ways the roles could conflict.

Just thinking about Sisko’s situation at this point…. he was Bajor’s spiritual leader, a Starfleet officer, the station administrator, a military commander, Jake’s father, and Kasidy’s lover….seems like a bigger load than any other Star Trek captain carried. Not sure anyone in human history ever had that combination of responsibilities…and so many ways the roles could conflict.

And then they still assigned him additional tasks, such as rooting out a Maquis rebel, infiltrating on spy missions in the Klingon high command that you'd expect to be done by others, or specialists, even...

It must suck to be one of the few competent people in Starfleet, seeing that they apparently have so few other choices to assign such missions to...

In the case of assigning him the 'Gowron Changeling' mission, I can understand assigning Sisko. He had advantages other captains didn't.

1. He had Odo, who personally had the knowledge of Changelings. And ultimately was the one to root out the real Changeling.

2. He had Worf, the only Klingon in Starfleet, under his command. Worf tutored the group on how to be Klingon.

3. He had more experience with the Dominion than anyone in Starfleet at this point.


With Eddington, we can only speculate on whether he was assigned with getting him because it happened on his watch under his command, or if Sisko requested to be assigned because it happened on his watch. We only know he was taken off it in "FOR THE UNIFORM" after the Defiant was crippled.

True. Even so, you can wonder whether they really should have taken Sisko off his busy schedule. And Worf may have been the only Klingon in Starfleet, but not necessarily the only Klingon citizen in the Federation. Starfleet might still have hired one of those to train a group of mission and covert infiltration specialists. I agree about point 1 and 3.
