This perhaps how I'd rank TNG stuff after the main series concluded:

Star Trek: Generations - 5/10

Star Trek: First Contact - 9/10

Star Trek: Insurrection - 3/10

Star Trek: Nemesis - 4/10

Star Trek: Picard (Season 1) - 7/10

Star Trek: Picard (Season 2) - 5/10

Star Trek: Picard (Season 3) - 9/10

That's my attempt of a fair take on the TNG movies and Picard series; wild, unpredictable fluctuations in quality seems to be the general impression, from high highs to sudden low lows (with Season 2 of PIC not quite awful the same way the opening, highly experimental seasons of TNG and DSCO were, but still kinda aimless and ultimately bogged down by Patrick Stewart's melodrama that Generations was, etc).

Personally rather fond of Insurrection. In fact I rewatched it earlier today, it's a great ride. Here's my overall ranking of the TNG continuations.

Star Trek: Generations - 6.5
/10

Star Trek: First Contact - 10/10

Star Trek: Insurrection - 8/10

Star Trek: Nemesis - 5/10

Star Trek: Picard (Season 1) - 7/10

Star Trek: Picard (Season 2) - 3/10

Star Trek: Picard (Season 3) - 8/10

I enjoyed Picard on the whole, but Season 2 was a real mess.

does anyone else think S3 should've been a separate series in its own right?
If it was still the same in every other way but name, no.

All three seasons feel like they're by a different showrunner, but they're not that different in tone or subject. They're all pretty dark and violent, they're all about Picard working with a crew on a mission and dealing with his past, they all feature the Borg in a big way, and so on. Plus I'm sure season 3 spends more time in Guinan's bar than the season that actually features Guinan.

Maybe if it'd been a Star Trek: Titan miniseries the writers could've jettisoned some of Star Trek: Picard's edginess, but I'm not really seeing any other benefit to separating it from the rest of the series.

A one-season sequel series? I don't really see an improvement there.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it didn't really feel like it first with the other seasons of PIC to me. Instead it felt like a show built to represent the handing of the to a to a new crew

I don't really feel as though any of the three seasons fit together very smoothly with each other, though S2-S3 is probably more of a shift than S1-S2.

I'm the one who preferred PIC season 2 , then PIC season 3, then PIC season 1. I watched the episodes one after the other binge watching after giving myself permission to watch the seasons in different order. I'm convinced watching Picard in this way contributed to my preferences. Yes, the flaws in season 2 I've read here and on other threads have merit. I really liked seeing the Confederation, I think Stewart's performance in season 2 was the strongest in many episodes and I've already gone back and re-watched several of season 2's episodes.

Season 2 is definitely ranking the lowest in my book for spending so much time in this boring century. I assume it was to conserve the budget for that giant reunion in Season 3.

2 is underrated IMO. I see why people are frustrated by a season of Planet Trek, and the plot doesn't tie up very cleanly, but otherwise it's not a bad watch. Though my weakness for both "Assignment: Earth" and Orla Brady may be giving it a boost.

I'm far, far more frustrated with season 1. Probably my least favorite season of any Trek.

I completely understand. I enjoyed most of the action and camaraderie displayed between the crew. I will say that I found the Borg queen and Agnes together a bit of a drag. But Rios eating peanut butter cookies, escaping from ICE and being reunited with Seven and Raffi...

Agnes and the Borg queen was one of the highlights of the season for me. Because it was a breath of scifi, in the dull backdrop of the modern world. And that scene early on when Agnes is hacking the queen, and speaks to Picard through the Queen's mouth, was eerie as hell.

1, 3, 2.

2 is definitely underrated but I have a few logic issues with it. 3 would narrowly beat season 2 but no season 3 ep is as good as the season 2 premiere. Not even close.

Season 3 has a lot of issues, mostly stemming from the hamfisted approach of Matalas damning torpedoes and ignoring established dramatic sense. Rates high on nostalgia, some good performances, lots of good individual scenes.

Season 1 is obviously the best written season, it plows new ground, updates the look, aims high in it's scifi plot and attempts to make sense of the events in the movies, not twist them into a new shape like season 3.

Number rating? Roughly:

1) 8.9
2) 8.1
3) 8.2
Might be time to appraise season 2 again. All the MAGA trekkies came out of the woodwork but it feels more relevant now, both the fascist future and ICE were prescient.

Terry Matalas and Drew Nichols are said to have made a "fan edit" film version of season 3. It would be interesting to see what they could do with season 2, especially if they had access to the raw footage.
Even more fanwank?? Not sure I could manage it.
