Rank the first ten films

Star Trek*
1. Generations
2. The Undiscovered Country
3. The Final Frontier
4. The Motion Picture - Director's edition
5. First Contact
6. The Wrath of Khan
7. The Search For Spock
8. Nemesis
9. Insurrection
10. The Voyage Home (whale steaks are yummy)

Generations as #1? Wow, that is shocking. Don't see that too often. I know there is a lot of Generations hate on this board, but I for one love this movie. There are obvious plot holes, but I still think it's a great film.

yeah didnt realize the hate until i starting reading stuff online, has a lot of sentimental value for me since first star trek film i saw, about age 5 or 6 (i remember it well!) my aunt brought me to see it, and like you said i think its a great film too

as for final frontier, pure guilty pleasure  (great music though), plus FF and espiecially TMP are the closest things to what Star Trek is supposed to be envisioned as

1. Nemesis(yeah, I know, but it was first Trek movie I saw in theatre's and it was the midnight showing)
2. First Contact
3. The Voyage Home
4. Wrath of Khan
5. Generations
6. Search for Spock
7. Insurrection
8. The Undiscovered Country
9. Final Frontier
10. The Motion Picture

A simple ranking is not really informative. The quality of Trek movies exists on a continuum. From best to worst in their degrees of greatness:

TWOK
TSFS ... TUC
TFF ... TVH
TMP(DE)
.
.
.
FC
.
.
.
.
.
INS
GEN
.
NEM

Kahn is the best villain, and despite the nonsense in the film (Which if you think about it is as bad Back to the Future, but just as enjoyable) it's still probably the best of the films.
I really like the scope of TSFS and I've always been a huge fan of the old FASA RPG setting which expanded heavily from this movie.
Undiscovered country is as good and also lends itself to a broader view of what the 23rd Century is.
I am a big apologist for The Final Frontier. I've always loved this movie no matter who all else hates it. To me, this is the last episode of TOS. It has great character moments for the big three and it's the last story where the crew of the Enterprise faces an enemy that is both god-like yet beatable. This was a common trope in TOS but never really exploited in later shows and I kinda miss it.
First Contact was okay, but I prefer other pre-movie fanon explanations of Cochrane's first flight.
Insurrection was forgettable, Generations made little sense and was hardly compelling.
Nemesis was a steamy pantload. I'm glad it's over. That said, I have all but Insurrection on DVD.

P.S. JJ-Trek was enjoyable in its own right and is sort of a guilty pleasure for me as well. But I wouldn't rank it anywhere on this scale as, to me, it just seems like it's own separate thing. I tend to agree with this guy's opinion on movies: http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-trek/star-trek-09/ But be warned, he has this weird direction of mixing his insightful reviews with suggestions that watching crappy movies has driven him into being a psychotic hooker-murdering maniac so view at your own peril. Definitely NSFW and probably don't watch with your kids in the room...

I'm rewatching all the movies. I'll rank them when I'm done. I'm doing a movie a week, so it'll be a while. :)

My ranking of the movies:

Star Trek: First Contact
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: Nemesis
Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Aren’t there TrekBBS rules against bumping long-dormant threads? I kind of doubt this thread will still be active in 10 weeks, but I could be wrong.

They are hard for me to rank because there are some moves I like pretty equally so I generally like to grade them instead of ranking them.

But here it goes anyway.

You know what? I'll join in:

First of all, my favorite series is TNG. TOS and VOY are tied for second place to me.

However the TNG movies are the worst of all, even FC wasn't "that" good.

Sooo... on to the list (from best to worst)

1. TUC - I loved the storyline, I loved the FX. Great Kirk and Spock character moments. Good send off to the series.

2. TWOK - I loved the villain, and I loved the music (Probably the best score in Trek IMO). The battle sequences were a bit contrived, but they worked because they were done quite well. I would have ranked it lower if Spock had ended up dead, but because he came back to life, I can safely ignore the death in the movie.

3. TSFS - Best enjoyed if watched in series along with TWOK and TVH. I loved the storyline of everyone willing to sacrifice themselves if there was a chance to get Spock back. I loved all the Genesis planet sequences. I was mesmerized with the "Mushroom" Spacedock.

4. TFF - I loved Sybok as a misunderstood antagonist. He didn't want to harm anyone. He just wanted what many people long for in their hearts. To find God. I loved the scenes where Sybok took away people's pains. McCoy's scene was particularly good. I loved the shore leave scenes for everyone, particularly the trio. I thought it was great that these men had become their own family, to the extend that they spent their free time with each other, even Spock. To me the FX were never that important if the story is in the right place, so the lack of quality FX doesn't hurt the movie too much IMO.

5. TVH - I liked the story about having to go back to the past to get some whales. I thought the idea of a Whale Probe was far out there though. Would have been nice to get some backstory on what the heck it was and what it wanted. The fish out of water concept was good, but it seems that this movie is starting to feel dated in the 80's. I thought the whole concept of using nuclear isotopes to recrystallize dilithium was hokey. The movie had enough good scenes to make up for it though.

6. JJ's "Star Trek". I thought the movie had awesome action and adventure themes that are sorely lacking from previous Trek. I liked Cpn. Pike the best, and I loved Karl Urban as McCoy. The guy is practically the same cynical man from TOS. Spock was ok. I felt Chris Pine as "Kirk" could use some work. I liked the new Enterprise and the new Bridge. It's buzzing with energy. I liked the style of filming, and didn't mind the lens flares. I actually liked Nero as a villain, but it's mostly to Eric Bana's acting. I did not like how "Star Wars" the movie felt. I think they should have kept some things more Trek like. For example, the Phasers should have been kept the same (beams of energy as opposed to Star Wars "bolts"). It wasn't necessary to destroy Vulcan completely either. I thought that was excessive and unnecessary to the movie.

7. TMP. I love the new Enterprise, and I love the FX shots, particularly in the DE. I liked V'Ger, and I particularly liked actually seeing it at the end of the movie. I thought the story was incredibly boring though, and the pacing was snail like. The DE fixes a lot of this, but it can't compare to the way movies are done today.

8. FC - Starts out great. We get a 20 second sequence of a space battle. Then we move into banal territory, because for the rest of the movie, we spend half the time cracking jokes with a drunk loser, and the other half of the time watching the Borg Queen trying to have sex with Data. There were good scenes though, like the space walk, and Picard having to deal with his reopened wounds. The introduction of the Vulcans was good as well.

9. INS - We spend the entire movie running away from basketball sized drones. There is no real danger to anyone. The So'na don't actually want to kill anyone, they just want to forcibly move them. The Ba'Ku are not worthy of help. Some cringe worthy boob and zit jokes.

10. GEN - The whole plot doesn't make sense. Soran doesn't need to destroy a solar system, he could just fly a shuttle back into the Nexus. The scenes where Kirk and Picard fight Soran seem forced and hamfisted. The Enterprise D, which was a great part of TNG, was destroyed. Kirk was killed, both for no valid reasons other than to symbolize that "TOS" was now done, and TNG was entering a "new era". The whole BOP scene was so hurting. The Enterprise could have unleashed rows of torpedoes until that ship was destroyed. The blatant reuse of the BOP explosion from TUC was visible 2 miles away.

NEM - The whole movie is dark. The costumes are silly. We were promised Romulans and get orcs from LOTR. Tom Hardy tried, but is not believable as a threat, nor as Picard's clone. The whole cast looks winded and tired. The end of the movie is severely depressing, particularly Data's death. This has to be the worst Trek movie ever made.

I'm sure mine will raise a few eyebrows....

First Contact
Wrath of Khan
Nemesis
TMP
The Undiscovered Country
Search For Spock
Generations
Insurrection
Final Frontier
Voyage Home

1. The Wrath of Khan
2. First Contact
3. The Search for Spock
4. The Motion Picture
5. Generations
6. The Undiscovered Country
7. Nemesis
8. Insurrection
9. The Voyage Home
10. The Final Frontier

I always have thought it was unfortunate, and probably the reason they weren't as successful, that the TNG films did not follow a serialization more like the TOS films. Of the 6 TOS films, only ST5 TFF really deviates from the continuous story they tell, and is the only film of the group that can be ignored outright. The TNG films, by contrast, all seem like individual, self contained stories that have few links to one another.

Here's my list, excluding Insurrection and Nemesis. I avoided them because of my friends saying they're horrible.

1. The Voyage Home - I love this movie so much. It's so light heart, I don't have to think, and I come into the movie with a smile and I leave with a smile. It's just a positive Trek movie that doesn't leave me wanting to slit my wrists or rant about what happened.

2. The Undiscovered Country - My first Trek movie and another favorite. I actually wrote my 5th grade short story based on this movie. Ahahaha >_> Every time I watch those final moments, I just get verklempt. What a great send off for the crew....

3. First Contact - My only TNG movie I've seen and enjoyed. I'm not a huge fan of TNG but I really appreciated this movie. It was funny and serious... Very interesting time travel story.

4. The Wrath of Khan - For some reason I when I re-watched it recently I didn't find it as amazing as when I first watched it. I thought that the pacing was just a tad bit too slow but still a great character film none the less.

5. The Search for Spock - This movie suffered from either being very strong in some scenes (Deforest delivers some great performances in the first half of the movie) or being insanely slow. I still enjoyed it as a bridge piece from TWOK to TVH

6. The Motion Picture - I hate this movie. I really do. I hate it because the movie is a special effects circlejerk in which it's story becomes convoluted and disarrayed. They're simply characters on screen: Why should I care for Decker? Why should I care for Iilah? Why is Kirk such a dick? Why is Spock such an ass? It just didn't seem like "Star Trek", it seemed like " Middle Aged Crisis Trek With Special Effects and Bald Chick "

7. The Final Frontier - I look at this movie as Shatner masturbating to his own glory on screen and subsequently giving all of us a big giant Fuck You. It's an unintentional comedy that ends up becoming unbearable to watch by the final minutes.

8. Generations - I don't even remember this movie. Something about Kirk and horses and Picard. Must have been really bad since I wiped it out of my memory.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek: Nemesis
Star Trek: Insurrection

Insurrection is usually found near the bottom of many lists, and I agree, but I will say that it has some of my most favorite cinematography work for any of the TNG films. Also, I just noticed a minute ago (as I'm watching it now), when Picard, Riker, Troi, Crusher, et al, step into the turbolift (the remember when we used to be explorers scene), there are little monitors behind Picard that show the location and movement of the turbolift! NEAT! :D It just all adds into the overall look and feel of the movie, which I like, and is what has kept it from the bottom of my own list.

The position indicator in the turbolift was first done in TMP.
