Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Has there ever been a show or movie or novel where space travelers on a super long (maybe even generational) journey reach their destination and other people are already there because of how much technology has advanced in the meantime?

Like the others here that sounds really familiar but I just can't recall the name of it.

BTW is my solar system idea too out there?

I suppose Space Seed was a little bit like this.

Found a Heinlein novel called Time for the Stars about long term, long range space flight projects where the ships can't travel faster than light. The mission goes bad on one planet but the captain wants to continue which leads the crew to consider mutiny. Another ship shows up less than a month later to help since they had discovered faster than light travel in the meantime.

Not quite what I was looking for. But along the same lines.

I (vaguely) remember something along those lines in Rocheworld. In that instance, the ‘quicker’ humans (for want of a term) had made a conscious decision to not go to the systems where the long-term sleeper ships sent earlier were headed.

It was towards the end of the book, almost as a throwaway passage, unfortunately.

Cheers,

I can't remember either. It seems like I may have read it in a novel.

So I decided to Google, and apparently this is a fairly well-worn trope.

So to answer the question: Yes, there has been. Take your pick.

I don't go to class reunions anymore. It seems pointless to go hang out with a bunch of strangers that happened to have gone to school with me when I was a child. There is a small handful of childhood friends that I have kept over the years. If I want to meet with them, I can just give them a call/text.

I was reading about a major quake in Afghanistan, and I learned that the U.N.'s resident coordinator for Afghanistan is named Indrika Ratwatte. Sounds like a Monty Python type name, doesn't it? "Dr. Rat Tw*t is heading up the program with Dr. Twinklebottom".

I had more friends in primary school than through high school but also I acted out a bit more because of the need to fit in so some of my choices were kind of questionable sometimes.

I've lost count with virtually most people I went to primary school with. But it was around 40 years ago since I finished and have moved around a lot.

Thinking what movie to watch tonight, after I get some dessert. Thinking Interstellar, as I continue with my Nolan movies marathon.

I need to get new shoes for my new job. I have such messed up feet that shopping for shoes is a nightmare. I've had foot pain my whole life, so I have to wear orthopedic shoes. Finding a pair that aren't horribly ugly, aren't painful or aren't ridiculously expensive, is a giant pain in the ass.

I finally made an appointment to see an orthopedist about the intermittent pain in my left ankle that I've had for the past few months. It's just a mild pain, but people do occasionally notice that I'm limping slightly.

On a completely unrelated note, I just ran across this article on the so-called "Freshman 15" -- the myth that students gain 15 pounds during their first year of college. I had never heard of such a thing until now.

It's pretty common to gain weight in college but it's just a couple of pounds for most people. I think people just like alliteration.
