Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Has there ever been a show or movie or novel where space travelers on a super long (maybe even generational) journey reach their destination and other people are already there because of how much technology has advanced in the meantime?

Like the others here that sounds really familiar but I just can't recall the name of it.

BTW is my solar system idea too out there?

I suppose Space Seed was a little bit like this.

Found a Heinlein novel called Time for the Stars about long term, long range space flight projects where the ships can't travel faster than light. The mission goes bad on one planet but the captain wants to continue which leads the crew to consider mutiny. Another ship shows up less than a month later to help since they had discovered faster than light travel in the meantime.

Not quite what I was looking for. But along the same lines.

I (vaguely) remember something along those lines in Rocheworld. In that instance, the ‘quicker’ humans (for want of a term) had made a conscious decision to not go to the systems where the long-term sleeper ships sent earlier were headed.

It was towards the end of the book, almost as a throwaway passage, unfortunately.

Cheers,
