Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Anyone ever visit the Gizmodo sites? The entertainment pages have a lot less original content and a lot more slideshows. It's mostly just aggregated news that was reported elsewhere first.
I go to Io9 on a regular basis, but I'll admit, I haven't been actually reading as many articles there lately as I did when I first started going there. I used to really like, but it seems like I'm seeing more and more stuff I already saw on other sites, and the stuff I didn't just doesn't see as interesting any more.

io9 and such sites are competing for content. So many sites online now a lot of the older ones are fighting for new content or rehashing articles that others have done.

Such as?

BTW why is truth so bad in this current world?

Whose truth?

It doesn't matter what the subject is, what the writers are actually writing about are themselves. Mark Wahlberg's agent negotiates a better deal for him for All the Money in the World reshoots than Michelle Williams' agent did for her, so the A.V. Club article is outrage over how the punk from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch is making more money than a female Oscar winner.

There's been some investigative journalism on Kotaku and Jalopnik, but the rest of the channels write like they're all on Deadspin.

That kind of thing annoys me

Recently discussing characters on certain Trek shows who were left to stagnate because the writers couldn't figure out what to do with them, but were unwilling to eliminate them (lethally or non). And while it may be controversial, I firmly believe that with a character whose presence is unnecessary or disruptive... sometimes it's better to just get rid of them.

Case in point... in a story I wrote about 18y ago, I wound up with a brutal love triangle between two characters I was pairing off and a third. The third character had had a rough past, and he deserved a happy ending. But, I had not created a suitable alternative female for him to conveniently fall for, I don't do "out of nowhere" romances like C/7, and I wasn't going to have this guy lurking around carrying the torch endlessly for this young woman. So, that character had a date with the Grim Reaper. It was brave and heroic, he got to die in the arms of the woman he loved, and his memory was honored suitably. Better for all involved than having an aging bachelor who either stubbornly refused to move on, or moved on to a life that held only himself.

Just amusing myself with the thought of Mark Twain in 2022 Earth and what he might think of the current crop of politicians
easy - he already said everything that needs to be said about marjorie taylor greene and lauren boebert - i guess he wouldn't mind missinterpreting a word or two (like reading the first the in that quote as these and generally consuming it with a few brain cells not firing at that moment)

I think I could write a pretty strong argument in favor of female suffrage, but I do not want to do it. I never want to see the[se] women voting, and gabbling about politics, and electioneering. There is something revolting in the thought. It would shock me inexpressibly for an angel to come down from above and ask me to take a drink with him (though I should doubtless consent); but it would shock me still more to see one of our blessed earthly angels peddling election tickets among a mob of shabby scoundrels she never saw before.

Ooh interesting

Two lanes both turn left. Light turns green, we all go. After the turn, for some reason the car in front of me signals right and actually starts moving into the right lane even though there are vehicles there. Then the driver must realize the level of stupidity about to be committed and stays in the left lane, but then up ahead takes a left when the two lanes split, a left that never would've been possible had the driver switched lanes. What the hell?

Top Gun: Maverick is available as a streaming purchase now and reaction videos are already up on YouTube. Not really a fan of them, but YouTube had one in my suggestions so I took a peek and.... this American guy didn't even purchase it! He just watched the bootleg copy that's out there because you can see the foreign language subtitles! :guffaw:

I just want to say in advance that I do not intend this post to shame anybody, and I'm not trying to convert people here to veganism, I'm simply trying to go a little deeper into what lead me to the decision to go that way myself.
I've mentioned a few time my decision to go vegan, and I said before that it was because I watched cute videos of animals and running around and playing, but thinking about it more today, I realized it really is more than just that. It's also the fact that I've come to realize that these are thinking, feeling, beings who have friends, and love their families. They feel pain, and happiness, and get bored when stuck in small pens forever. And the more I thought about it, the more I hated the idea of them being forced into the horrible conditions of most farms where food animals are bred and lived, and then being brutally murdered.
Just out of curiosity, for the non-vegans on here, which I'm assuming are the majority of you, what would it take for you to go vegan? Again, I'm not trying to shame anyone here, I'm just honestly curious.

Thank you for sharing this!!!

I was a vegetarian for 7 years for the same reasons. However, I had to stop because of my weight. I was really thin at one point from not enough nutrients. However, I stopped in 2007. These days there’s so many more vegetarian/vegan options in the grocery store and restaurants.

I probably won’t go back, but I make an effort to choose vegan/vegetarian options when I can. I think if more people tried to choose vegan as often as possible (as opposed to a strict lifestyle choice) it would help the cause a lot. Having Veganism presented as an all or nothing choice often keeps people away.

It's nice to know you were vegan, that sounds like a good reason to give it up.
I was kind of amazed when I started looking and saw how many vegan options are in stores now. I do eat a lot of the plant based meats, and it really is amazing how much they taste like the real thing. There some chick'n bites I got at Target a couple weeks ago, and once I started eating them, the taste and texture was so much like the real thing I actually pulled the bag back out of the freezer and double checked to make sure they plant based, and not the real deal.

Wow that’s impressive! Chicken is the hardest to replicate. I love Beyond meats and most stores sell them. I’ve preferred it at times.

Seitan is probably my favorite of the options out there. Least favorite being tofu, but it’s become its own category now. When I was a vegetarian back in the day everyone suggested it but it doesn’t taste like meat.

He'd probably say, "When I met those other fellows from the future, I was certainly more impressed than this.
"Please send me back now."

Nope, It has been said before. :)

Mark Twain, one of the greatest American authors and humorists, had a way with words beyond his books and stories. He was also quite sharp with insults and opinions, especially regarding politics and religion.

Congress and Politics
"Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself."

“There is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress."

"Fleas can be taught nearly anything that a Congressman can."

"Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it."

"An honest man in politics shines more there than he would elsewhere."

"All Congresses and Parliaments have a kindly feeling for idiots, and a compassion for them, on account of personal experience and heredity."
