Spoilers Rainn Wilson joins cast, as.....

TNG (quite rightly) had a ban on recurring characters from the 60s show being featured for the first few years of its life.

There was also a decree in the original writers' guide: "No stories about warfare with Klingons and Romulans and no stories with Vulcans. We are determined not to copy ourselves and believe there must be other interesting aliens in a galaxy filled with billions of stars and planets."

Good thing TNG had the Ferengi to serve as interesting and believable villains, eh? ;)

The internet is going to be unbearable for the next 24 hours with all the April Fools'. Us sci-fan fans are juicy targets for such codswallop.
Anyway... before that begins, this Muddy casting news is legit. It's being reported all over the intranets. Here's a tweet from Star Trek Discovery with a gif that shows him beaming in with the logo. https://twitter.com/startrekcbs/status/847856830877286400

The more I think of it... Harry Mudd is genius. He's going to be constantly antagonizing everyone. Is he going to be this show's Neelix or Quark?

He could fill that role very well, I don't expect he'd be a long-term crew member, more like a recurring PITA.

I wouldn't call it "highly unlikely since the ship in STID is based on the image of Mudd's ship seen on the view screen in the original version of Mudd's Women, despite it being different in the TOSR version. Also, despite it being a Class J ship, it looks nothing Class J ships as seen in Enterprise.
That his ship looks different in every appearance, and every appearance of it's class, surely makes it MORE likely it won't be the ID version?

I am looking forward to this, and find Rainn Wilson to be an excellent choice for Harry Mudd. That they're including Harry Mudd at all is awesome, and someone who has solid comedic timing like Wilson is gravy. I wish the show was out now!

I think this is great news. I was wondering if anyone who knows how to photoshop could show us a pic with Wilson having the Mudd mustache and hat?

Hate? I don't hate it. I'm just not excited about it. Could be great, could be absolutely cringe worthy.

In TOS, Mudd was a ridiculously idiotic character. Which doesn't mean he has to be in this series, he could be a fantastic character for all any of us know about it for now, I realize this. It's just his original incarnation was so horrible, they'll have to do something really different (IMO) to make him even close to being interesting.

I'm very critical to another pre-TOS series.

But if they had brought in Rainn Wilson as Everett Backstrom who had been transported to the future and then became the captain of a Starship, then I would have watched every possible of the series no matter what! :techman:

Backstrom rocks!

I have a feeling this is going to be a really strange show. I could easily be wrong but they are pushing this as a series in the prime timeline but I get the feeling that it is going to look and feel out of place with everything else.......it's hard to explain. Maybe like a reboot but within an already established timeline of events?

As has been pointed out many times it a visual reboot of the same prime timeline. There is great difficulty in trekland accepting or understanding this. Aside from the visual reboot, some of those visual elements will lend themselves into an addition we haven't known about the timeline or even a few changes. This is as it should be.

To quote Meyer: Lastly, when begged by a fan to “not screw this up!,” Nick Meyer thought for a moment and said – with no malice – that fans should probably lower expectations a bit, as there will always be disappointment when impossible-to-meet personal standards are set. “With all due respect,” he said, “fans do not know what they want.”

I'm expecting a visual reboot of sorts even though that has me wondering just how much of a reboot that is going to be. That isn't exactly what I'm getting at. I'm thinking in general it will stick out from everything else. Perhaps its the less conventional route they are taking with who the leads will be (ie not focusing on the captain with the ensemble in the background) or that the plan seems to be a Netflix style one season arc I don't know.....I can't really put my finger on it.

I'm just coming out of my post-April 1st news blackout--is this actually happening? Announcing it on March 31st was kind of ridiculous.

Am I the only one who hates this so far?

No. I hate it too. I'm amazed by the love here. The casting is fine, but the character isn't needed at all. And else where online the love fest isn't there.

But STD, boldly going where man has gone 2-3 times before!
