Radio signals and virus/bacteria

Hey -- I was wondering if anyone might know...

My theory for a Zombie Apocalypse like in Walking Dead could have started through nanites already spread worldwide, but a worldwide radio signal activating them.

That signal accidentally causes them to re-animate people into the walkers we know.

I was wondering if instead of nanite, a virus or bacteria could also be activated by a signal...something that can happen worldwide in a very short period of time.

Any thoughts?

Single cell orgamisms respond better to chemical signals than anything EM based.

A vapour spread over a wide area could well activate them far better than that, and be much easier to do.

EM? doubtful.

If you are writing fiction, sure. Bonds have specific distances and certain wavelengths can resonate/vibrate those bonds. In reality, unlikely. Frequencies can agitate organisms but that implies a sustained transmission. "Triggering" is different.

I wrote a short book called Indoctrination : A Basic Zombie Survival Guide that is published on Amazon.

Nanites could be the catalyst where something goes wrong with their programming and instead of healing the various systems of the body they evolve to instead a sentience of self preservation after a few Nanites realize that once their task is finished they simply pass out of the human body through urine. The Nanites then begin feeding off of the interior parts of the host in order to maintain their own energy needed to sustain their life. This causes the host to only have the need to feed on other living tissue so that the Nanites can produce other Nanites and then pass them on to another host by biting or scratching the host where the Nanite Egg Cells are then transferred to the host and then incubate within the host thus spreading the Nanite infection to each new host. Incubation lasts from between 7 to 21 days. It would be rare that an infected host would be cured but I am certain someone would be working on the cure after the outbreak took place.

The only question is what would the Nanites become once they had evolved past needing the host? Something more sinister like a Nanite / Human hybrid that looks like a human but is a Nanite with the same survival ideology as that of a human.

Unless the life form is a rock their is communication between viruses and bacteria so it could be possible that a radio signal could cause the virus or bacteria to activate or actually guide the virus or bacteria to its target cell.

Not sure I'd be promoting it here. It might cause people to Google the name of the author.

I sure wish I had been smarter than to do that. :(

Bacteria are best activated by the presence of favourable conditions. Like most creatures, but perhaps best of all, the only thing they care about is being warm and having food on their table. For example, when you drain them of water, they shut off and go dormant. You give them their water back, they activate.

But—and that's the good part!—favourable conditions may well include that ol' good EM energy. Imagine now if Soran shuts down the sun for a century, causing all bacteria to hibernate. When the Daleks teleport a new sun back into its place, everyone else will be dead but all the bacteria will activate responding to the sun's EM emissions. Poor alien archaeology crew down there—totally didn't see that coming.

I apologize if I partly stole the plot of Star Trek: Renegades in there.
