Question about Relics

StarshipValiant

Cadet
Newbie
While I have always enjoyed this episode very much, down to getting emotional when Scotty first saw the old Enterprise, I always wondered why Troi or no one from the counseling division tried to help he adjust to waking up 75 years later. I would think that this would be a tragic situation for one to be in. Waking up, all your friends and family dead. Was this an oversight and weakness in the story or just not realized? I remember Troi discussing dating with Data...but no one thought that Mr. Scott would need any adjustment counselling?

I seem to remember Troi hugging Scott prior to his departure at the end of the episode, so she did previously interact with him while he was on the ship. Troi doesn't just randomly hug people she's never met, in fact she's usually socially stiff.

In the deleted scene, Troi pays him a visit, after Geordi hits him with the "In the way" scene, & before Data makes him a drink
SCOTT
... "in the way"... used to be engineers had a little respect for each other... used to matter if a man -- (The door CHIMES.)

SCOTT
What do you want? (TROI ENTERS.)

TROI
Is this a bad time? (SCOTT's demeanor softens with her)

SCOTT
Oh... uh, no. Captain Montgomery Scott at your service. What can I do for you?

TROI
Deanna Troi, ship's counselor... and actually I'm here to see if there's anything I can do for you.

SCOTT
Why... thank you, Lass. But I'm set for now. The quarters are more than adequate... the replicator is a wonder...

TROI
I'm glad you're comfortable... But I was actually more interested in how you feel.

SCOTT
How I feel?

TROI
Yes. It would be perfectly normal to feel disoriented, confused or even frightened following the kind of extraordinary experience you've just had.

SCOTT
I suppose it's been... a little bewildering, yes.

TROI
I'm sure you have a lot of questions about what's happened over the last seventy-five years... if you'd like, I could help you access some of our historical records... maybe you could discover what happened to your family... or friends.

SCOTT
I'm... not ready for that just yet. It's a hard thing to realize that everyone ye once knew is probably... (He trails off)... Pardon me for asking... but what exactly is a... Ship's Counselor?

TROI
I'm here to take care of the emotional well-being of our crew... (Smiling) and of our guests.

SCOTT
And you're an officer?

TROI
Yes. They started assigning counselors to starships about forty years ago when they realized that the pressures of extended space travel -- (She's interrupted)

SCOTT
You're a psychologist.

TROI
Among other things.

SCOTT
La Forge sent you here, didn't he? I may be old, but I'm not crazy.

TROI
Geordi didn't send me and I know you're not crazy.

SCOTT
You're damned right I'm not, and I don't need a ship's counselor, or a psychologist, or whatever else you are. I know what I need and it's not here.

With that, Scott heads for the EXIT
Basically, he shuts her down pretty hard, and it doesn't shine a very positive light on the character imho. The whole "Scotty is a whiny old man" thing was already too much for me to accept. I'm glad they cut it, even if it left the small plot hole of her not serving her function. It use to bother me too, until I found out about the missing scene

The entire episode doesn't shine a good light on him, he's whiny, disrespectful and annoying. He just took time away from the way more interesting plot about the Dyson sphere.

Troi doesn't seem very good at her job, or at least doesn't work like psychiatrists in our era would.

She left the 20th century (cryofrozen) folks alone, locked in a room to get on with themselves for hours on end in The Neutral Zone, plus she left poor Jeremy Aster (a child) alone in his quarters after his mother died and he'd been Orphaned, before pawning him off to Worf.

Being neglectful of Scotty is entirely in character for her.

She does seem to be the only therapist for 1013 people, she'll be a little stretched.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I had no idea that there was ever a deleted scene. Also forgive my typo in the original post. I like the episode and it speaks volumes to me given that I have been around a lot of older people who seemingly have out lived their usefulness and are alone, so it touched me. I think that the subject matter is powerful but it just always struck me as really odd that Troi wasn't there and then when I saw her at the end, it was like, "Where have you been?" She was absent the entire episode until the end. Also yes, Spock was alive at that time.

Alive yes, but still on Romulus presumably -- this took part after Unification in S5.

There's others. We never see them, but they get mentioned
Wasn't Spock still alive at the time?
Spock, & perhaps Bones. In fact, the only one with a confirmed deceased date is Kirk, IIRC. It's possible Scotty & all 5 of the other TOS 7 are still around, which begs the question, would you want to see them like that? Won't really help Scotty's old age emotional funk much, seeing everyone of his besties all shriveled up like McCoy was after Farpoint. Technically, Kirk is still in the Nexus at this point too

I always thought that Scotty was the one who was treated badly, for several reasons:

1. He's a legend that at the very least Geordi should know and respect, but he (LaForge) acts exactly the opposite.

2. He's still an active Captain, I assume (was he ever listed as retired?). He should have outranked everyone except Picard, which would make their actions insubordinate.

So he was on the Jenolan as a passenger on the way to a retirement colony, so I'm not sure about whether he was still serving in Starfleet, but active rank or otherwise, he can't just give orders to persons of lower rank on a boat where he's not part of the chain of command.

That said, I do agree that LaForge in particular should have shown him a lot more respect, regardless. Even retired officers maintain their rank (and are often promoted at retirement) as an honorific.

I don’t know exactly, but I recall when I watch the news or read the paper, if they are using some one from the military who’s retired as a source they usually have the graphic or text say I.e. Captain Joe Smith (Retired). So even if he was on active retirement, Scotty would still have his Captain’s rank. And I guess anyone lower than Captain would have to give him the respect his rank was due when he was on or in a Starfleet facility.

Logically, one of the first things Scotty would have done is Google his old shipmates - but of course, doing so would constrain writers on future TOS movies so he just doesn't.

Even though we know Spock and McCoy are alive.

The TOS movies were officially over at that point, no? Not that that ever stopped them before of course. ;)

This was before Generations, which told the final fate of Jim Kirk, and was originally planned to feature cameos by McCoy and Spock.

Was GEN written at that point? It's not a TOS movie, but I'll still go along. :)
