Q --- overused/comicalised?

I found it funny how Sisko and Janeway reacted when Q came around. All and acting like he was an annoyance.
For Picard it was OK as he's dealt with him a few times, but they looked a little silly saying "What do you want Q? We don't want to play games!"
If I was a Captain and I got to meet him I'd be acting like I met a celebrity.

When Q showed up on the Enterprise-D, generally chaos ensued with a few notable exceptions. By the time of DS9, standard Starfleet policy regarding Q probably was that the best way to deal with him was to ignore him, not play into his games, and hope that he gets bored and goes away...

That ... and I got the impression that Humans in Trek would have a higher degree of emotional control and deal with 'famous' people in a toned down capacity without actually glorifying them into something they are not.

Q is no exception.
He may be more powerful, and knows more than Humans, but that doesn't elevate anyone or anything into an absurd concept known as 'god' or 'more than equal' status.
To do that is to simply delude oneself thinking you're inferior to others.

A SF captain cannot allow himself/herself to behave in such a capacity.

On one hand, Q was an annoyance.
On the other hand, he did make a valid point in offering Humans aid in dealing with highly advanced races like the Borg.

Deks, now you make me curious. I don't recall any instance in which Q aided the Ent-D crew against the Borg....In helping the Borg find humanity, maybe.

To be fair, the Federation and the Borg were going to butt heads anyway--and I believe Q knew this. Q simply showed Picard that they were coming and that they better get ready. In as much as the Borg now knew of the Federation's existence, the Federation now knew of the Borg's existence.

Although there is quite some evidence that Borg knew about the Federation well in advance of Q's sneak preview of them...

He gave Picard humility. It was a lesson he needed to learn. In that scene in Ten Forward, he was arrogant and cocky. He deserved to be taken down a peg.

The Borg are the cause of the mysteriously destroyed outposts in the "The Neutral Zone" -- but neither the Ent-D crew or the Rommies know it at the time



As for Q, I do think he was badly misused in VOY. There was an on-screen charisma between Stewart and JDL and their two characters really fed off each other and Picard usually grew as a result.


The TNG movies should have been totally different...and a Q movie should have been the last one IMO


It should have gone:

Crossover Movie (GEN): if you wanted that in the first place....

Borg Movie (FC)

Romulan Movie I (NEM): but completely different than how they did it -- A good Romulan villain (no need for all the B4, Picard-clone, Reman nonsense) and make it worth it

Romulan Movie II: why couldn't we have a two-part movie story?? The "trilogy" approach worked for TOS movies and it could have worked for TNG movies

Q Movie: continue the story of Q as the life/spirit/universe Guide ala EAF, Tapestry, AGT....and round out the entire TNG epoch


"Tapestry" is easily one of my favorite TNG episodes -- largely because the Q character is at his best when he's the Guide and not the Clown....and this episode is written and executed to perfection

DeLance had the comic skills and the chemistry was there between him and just about everybody on the TNG cast.

The writers would have to be fools not to take advantage of that.

I fully agree... he brought much needed levity to that show and every time he showed up, I couldn't help but wonder what hilarity would ensue.

Yeah, I suppose reading back over it I should have said "After TNG". I pretty much enjoyed every ep with him when he was up against Picard, but with Sisko and Janeway --- nah, didnt work at all.

I disagree somewhat. I realize not everybody likes "The Q and the Grey," but I do. Q2? Not so much. How many DS9 episodes did he have? I am in the process of watching the series now for the first time since it went off the air, and so far, I've only run into one. It wasn't great, but it was fine as well - not Q's greatest moment or anything, but I enjoyed it.

I am in the process of watching the series now for the first time since it went off the air, and so far, I've only run into one. I can't stand Q. The only episode I liked him was when he was temporarily mortal. Someone should've put him out of his misery...

Q was fine throughout TNG... DS9 didn't really do him justice, and VOY just made the Q silly.

About a week ago, Mila Yomit - the Hebrew word of the day site - quoted Q from the episode "Hide and Q." The line where he says, "The Enterprise is now helpless, stuck like an Earth insect in amber..." was selected to illustrate the expression "like an insect in amber."
