Purists: what didn't you hate?

Okay, this is strictly for those old-school diehards who didn't like the new film and more or less wish it never existed.

Were there any changes you liked? For example, one of my friends who i went with was a HUGE TNG fan. He didn't hate the movie, he thought it was fun entertainment. But he didn't like it as Star Trek, and he really didn't like the idea of this being the primary canon that new material is produced for.

However, he admitted that he thought the new phaser design, with the manual switch between stun and kill and corresponding change in beam color, made perfect sense and was something he'd like to see tried out in even in the original timeline.

Were there any moments or details like that for you? Things that, even among all the whiz-bang stuff you didn't like, you thought were a cool idea?

This matter has been discussed at various times many, many times.

In any case, for the most part, I didn't mind most of the changes, but I thought that destroying Vulcan was a repulsive act on the part of the JJ and staff.

I didn't even notice that the phaser beam changed colour depending on setting. Suppose it makes sense.

Isn't it strange that some Star Trek fans now call other Star Trek fans a pejorative term like "purists", because they maybe don't think certain parts of the film were necessary or good?

We are all on a messageboard talking about a work of fiction - every one of us - so lets not make out some are into Star Trek too much while others are rebellious and cool eh?

Since I strongly disliked exactly two things and only two things, I suppose that makes me a "purist." I absolutely loved everything else about the movie. Even the time line changes that facilitated the re-boot. I loved the actor choices. I loved Scotty's sidekick. I loved the Uhura-Spock thing. The Orion cadet. The lens flares. The new ship design. Nimoy's role. The product placement. The Grand Canyon in Iowa. I loved just about everything in this movie. But I did not like the fact that they destroyed Vulcan and killed Amanda. I don't understand why those two things were necessary. As a fan of Trek since the '70s, it pained me to see those two things happen in the movie. Nero encountering the USS Kelvin was enough to set the whole reboot into motion. Blowing up Spock's home world and killing his mom wasn't necessary. And I'm actually stunned that there is not widespread outrage about these two things.

I agree it was completely unecessary and I think some fans have still to come around to the fact that Vulcans (other than Spock) will now be forgotten in the new Star Trek.

I also didn't like the fact old Spock will now live his life out in emotional misery. It would have been better and more noble to kill him in an act of sacrifice.

I'd rather see topics aimed at discussing aspects of the movie rather than at discussing aspects of the fanbase, particularly from a premise of "Purists: what didn't you hate?" Closing.
