PSP vs DS

I'm thinking about picking up a portable game system (I have some traveling I'll be doing over the next few months) and I'm weighing a PSP versus a Nintendo DS. Curious to see if there are any opinions here on which is the best system. Pros? Cons?

Wow, we haven't a PSP vs DS thread here in about 4 years :D

Seriously, they're both neato systems and it just depends what kind of games you like to play?

I have both, but if I had to choose, it'd be the DS. It has several great games across a number of genres, plus it has the back catalogue of the Game Boy Advance open to it.

I still think the clamshell design makes the DS the best choice for portable gaming. I've only taken my PSP outside once.

That said, you'll want to buy a used DS now because the DSi will come out sometime in the new year... probably for a holiday 09 release.

If you want a handheld system with a really huge library of games go with the DS.

I have a DS and I love it. The DS battery lasts 18 hours at the lowest lighting setting which is great. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and Final Fantasy IV are fun! I recommend getting the Crimson/Black color.

Not sure why you mentioned having to get it used... there are still plenty of DS Lites with the GBA slot being sold around my area.

The DS that's out right now has the added bonus of being able to play GBA games but Nintendo is getting rid of the backward compatibility in the next version release. We don't know if they are going to phase out the DS lite or not.

I have had experience with both and I would have to say that I much preferred the DS. Part of that is the game library, but it's also about aesthetics. The DS just feels right in my hands, very well designed. The PSP is just okay.

If you are getting a DS make sure you do NOT get the white color. After using it a while the buttons turn yellow and dust is much easier to see on it. I've seeing many complaints about that. Any other color is better which is why I got Crimson/Black.

I have both, but I have to say that I prefer the DS to the PSP. The biggest reason for this would be the game library that the system has as well as the design of the system itself. The PSP is also enjoyable, but the game library is slim at best, but there are some really fun games out there. Like others have said, it all depends on what kind of games you like to play.

I dunno, I'm sure people have had this problem, but I've had my white DS for over a year now and it still looks like new.

Thanks for the advice so far ... I'd be interested in RPGs (Final Fantasy, etc) as well as classic arcade style games, strategy games (I love Civilization) perhaps even a shooter or two (I love Halo, Call of Duty, etc.)

Both the PSP and the DS have their share of RPGs, though I would say that the DS is leading in this group (simply cause its getting a Chrono Trigger port imho lol). the DS also has some stratagey games (Civilization Revolutions, Advance Wars, Final Fantasy Tactics). The PSP has Final Fantasy Tactics The Lion War, which I hear is an outstanding game. Not sure about any other stratagey games on it though. As for shooters, I got to admit that I avoid those like the plague on portables. I do recal the PSP having a couple of shooters, though I dont think they were well recieved.

They remade FFIII and FFIV with better graphics for the DS. If you are getting a DS I suggest getting FFIV first since it's the better game of the two and it's still new so you can get it at any store that sells DS games.

You can find the first six FF games in the series on GBA if you look around a little. They aren't too hard to find at some at used game stores.

I prefer the PSP's game library over the DS. Socom, Madden, Tekken, Final Fantasy:CC, God of War ect all are great games on the PSP.

The PSP also has better mulitmedia capabilites which I find using more often than the gaming aspect anyway. If you get bored playing games, you can always listen to music or watch a movie.
