'Profit and Lace' Why do people hate you so?

I kind of liked "Profit and Lace". Granted, some of the humor was forced, but it was entertaining nontheless. There were some good lines here and there, the musical score was top-notch, and if you can wade through all the camp, there was a message buried somewhere in there.

My biggest problem (which kinda negates any message there might have been) was Quark's reaction at the end: He's supposedly so out of kilter from the hormones that he can hardly function. Granted, it could be argued that it's because he's not used to them, but everytime I see the episode, I can't help but read a bit more into it (females hormones = unstable behavior).

Not enough to make me dislike the episode, though: I'll give it 2 and a half (bordering on 3) stars.

It just sucked plain & simple. Whatever it was meant to be it didn’t end up being. It was embarrassing at times too.

It was a filler episode...they needed to stretch some stories before the juicy war arc resumed.

I can’t blame the writers though, not every episode must be serious or dramatic, they probably wanted to do something light before the season finale. Boy did they make up for it! :)

I might agree, had Jadzia's death not been so patently silly and Dukat would now enter into full cartoon supervillain mode, from which the character would never fully recover.

Alright, otherwise it's a great finale. But atonement for 'Profit and Lace'? I don't know...

Hey, I love the Ferengi. I love Quark, Brunt, Rom. 'House of Quark', 'Little Green Men', 'The Magnificent Ferengi', there's a lot of really funny Ferengi stuff out there. Quark is one of DS9's most engaging and nuanced characters, too. From his observations on how the Ferengi are better than the Federation in 'The Jem'Hadar', the brutal nature of humanity in 'The Siege of AR-558', or his insistence he will remain true to the principles of greed and opportunism in 'The Dogs of War', he's just one of those DS9 characters who got all the good lines.

'Profit and Lace' just comes off as a little, well, contrived. Quark-in-drag isn't funny. Quark seducing Nilva isn't funny. It's absurd, and I definately see how the writers were trying to go for the Ferengi-to-end-all-Ferengi episodes... but the end result simply blew up in their faces. I don't loathe it the way some people do, I just find it excruiating.

Quark was great and loveable, though the rest of the Ferengis were just poorly written and downright annoying most of the time in my opinion. Nog & Rom are the exceptions though (minor exceptions!). But even then Rom’s antics got boring very quickly, and was very predictable.

I actually thought the Ferengis were pretty interesting on paper. They got massive airtime on the show and the whole philosophy of Ferengi life was quite interesting, partly mirroring 20th/21st century Earth. I just wish they weren’t used as comic relief most of the time!

Anyway, as I said above ‘Profit and Lace’ was just awful. I’d hate to explain this episode to a non-Trek fan….

Fair points my friend. Yes Dukat lost his uniqueness after he became possessed by the pah-wraiths, but I think it was the next step in the development of his character. But he was never as interesting no.

I think so, but I agree they could’ve done a better job handling Farrell’s departure, and the consequences of it in that episode.

Agreed with the people who thought the humour was forced and simply wasn't funny (and I did enjoy the Magnificent Ferengi and Little Green Men). I mean, Sluggo-Cola, the slimiest Cola in the Galaxy???

The idea that he agreed to have his member chopped off is absurd.

What on Earth are you talking about? Did Armin Shimmerman get his cock cut off? No, and neither did Quark. They just needed him to pass for female for a few hours. I don't think major surgery was involved.

I don't paint all Ferengi episodes w/the same brush.
Some are funny-Magnificent Ferengi
Some are good-House of Quark

Some are good AND funny-Little Green Men
Some are bad-Rules of Acquisition/Family Busniness
Some are bad AND unfunny-Ferengi Luv Songs/Profit and Lace

I'm surprised most people who voted (until now) seem to like the ep....I do, for one. It's not terribly intelligent, nor is the humour all too refined and such....still, I watch it now and then and manage to enjoy it every time.
An ep doesn't always have to be intelligent for fans to like it. If you were fed an unending diet of the intelligent stuff, it might get boring. So occasionally, one needs a little junk food.

Well I agree, that's why I like it, despite the episode's blatant stupidity. :D

The show made it clear that he had the full female anatomy, and was missing the usual male anatomy.

I wonder why they did not have a travelling rogue physician do Quarks operation rather than Bashir. This as always puzzled me and left me wondering what Quark have on Bashir to do something so odd.
If a "Quack" did the operation then that would have given a more logical explanation for the post op problems Quark had.
This could also have led to a much more acidic conclusion with Bashir struggling to rectify the botched operation, and we the viewers having the pleasure of watching the astonished reactions of Odo and Sisco as they have to set in motion the arrest of unregisterd Doctor.
This scenareo also leaves the viewer wondering just how much of a recovery Quark made and answers one of the major criticism of this episode which is that Quark made no character progress during this episode.
I don't blame the actors or director for this episode and I regard this as my guilty pleasure but if the powers higher up had made the comedy approach darker it surely would have felt more in line with the rest of the series.

Just a thought.

You (and Armin) make a point that needs to be considered.

In a way, though, perhaps what occurred is more faithful to the character's very gradual evolution, in that Quark is not one to learn lessons easily.

I just watched, no, endured this episode during the course of my series marathon today, and oddly enough, it's not the horrific, soul-crushing nightmare I remembered. It's still a terrible, nearly unwatchable episode and a dated, embarrassing concept that should never have made it to the screen, but it didn't seem to provoke anything from me other than mild revulsion and disgust. (The last time I watched it, I threw things.) I must have mellowed out in my old age or something.

Yep, Move Along Home has that one covered

Thanks for your feedback. Keep it coming. I am pleasantly surprised that more people like it. Glad to know I am not alone.

Just for the record, one's penis isnt 'cut off'.

Its simply inverted. So you get an 'inny' instead of an 'outy'

:)

"Move Along Home", for all its faults, has a quirky sense of fun and camp value. It's funny and entertaining and has a decent story behind it. "Profit and Lace" has none of these.

At least Move Along Home doesn't hurt my eyes, other than from Odo's primitive Season 1 makeup. But that's nothing compared to the vicious assault on my eyes that is Lumba. If forced to watch either again, I'd definitely go with Move Along Home every time.

I have to admit, when I first watched this, I laughed. Quite a lot as well. And I normally pride myself on laughing at things like Frasier and not at things like Profit and Lace.
I haven't watched it in years though, which may explain why I don't hate it.

You know, i actually enjoyed the episode. I thought it was funny. A funny episode to break up some tense episodes that aired around the same time.
