Private moments

The captain of the Intrepid must have been a damn quick study to beat Spock to that rank, if Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet. The entire crew of that ship were Vulcan.

He was probably already a Captain in the Vulcan fleet and for some unknown reason Starfleet cut some kind of deal with the Vulcans where they gave them the use of the Intrepid. I'm sure people here can come up with countless scenarios for it. :vulcan:

Vulcan is a founding member of the Federation.

Yeah, now they are. But the unspoken expectation in 1966 might have been more like the equivalent of Spock being the first "Indian" (Native American) in the U.S. Navy, and how incredibly honorable and tolerant we were to let him be an officer when he came from a less advanced or less powerful culture.

That all-Vulcan Intrepid bit in "The Immunity Syndrome" might represent a change of perceptions by 1967. Now Spock's stature as an individual had grown so much that his ethnic group could no longer be thought of, even unconsciously, as a people who were just now getting into Starfleet.

Off-topic, does anybody else think that an all-Vulcan crew would make for the most boring Star Trek series ever?

Strange how The Intrepid was a ship manned entirely by Vulcans isn't it?

I think they had most crews manned by primarily one species as a convenience for climate control and dietary reasons.

okay forgive me it's late and my brain can't seem to remember what WALGMO is.

It's the new miracle in a bottle with thousands of uses! From stain removal to hair tonic WALGMO can do it! Just send $9.95 and shipping and handling to WALGMO Inc.

LOL I think I saw it on an infomercial recently ;)

I always wondered what Kirk and Spock discussed with each other when they were off duty. Both men were private, but I always thought the longer they served together, the closer they would become as friends. I was watching "Journey to Babel" tonight and thought it was kind of odd that Spock never mentioned to Kirk that Ambassador Sarek and Amanda were his parents. Especially since they were going to pick up the Vulcan delegation to Babel (it was their last stop on their way to Babel)

I always had a problem with this for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that Kirk is Spock's CO. Kirk would have read Spock's dossier. I an't see Kirk taking over from Pike without reviewing the records of his key personnel. Certainly not his First Officer. Also, Spock revealed more than once that his father was Vulcan and his mother human and in This Side of Paradise he specifically mentioned his father was an ambassador. We were never led to believe Vulcan/human pairings were common. So when the Vulcan ambassador comes up by shuttlecraft with his human wife, Kirk should have put two and two together immediately. There is no way this information is not in Spock's file. Hell, Spock is even specifically identified as "half-Vulcan" in Mendez's file on the Talos IV mission. "What's the other half?" Starfleet would ask before accepting his application...

It was just written this way to give us a shock to kick off the episode, but it's kind of ridiculous. It would have made a little more sense if McCoy mentioned it. Because, reason #2 why this bothers me, Kirk asking Spock if he wants to see the folks in front of an visiting ambassador is awkward at best and a huge lapse in protocol and Vulcan privacy at worst. Bones would be that dickish, Kirk shouldn't.

Having said that, it's a superior episode. One of my favorites.

Why? Kirk would have reviewed Spock's records for career history and professional credentials. Vulcan likely has thousands of ambassadors. Spock most likely never mentioned his father's name. Kirk might not have even noticed which species the Ambassador wife was (other than somekind of humanoid).

Considering Vulcan ambassadors and humans probably don't hook up all that often, and since Spock mentioned his parents more than once (Vulcan ambassador, human teacher), and Kirk must have read Spock's file....that's why. Even if it was, say, three years since he read it, the factoid of "oh, Spock's father is a Vulcan ambassador and his mother is human" should have lit some kind of bulb.

And Kirk didn't notice a woman was human? KIRK? :)

There's obviously a possibility to leave out/obscure some facts in those files. Anyone ever wondered how it was possible for McCoy, who is the CMO and Kirk's doctor, to not know about Tarsus? Took me time to come up with explanation for this one.

Maybe that information isn't in the file on Spock! Maybe it's a close personal thing to them and they don't like it recorded?

In a quasi-military dossier? Something like Spock's parents' names, contact information (next of kin) and the fact that his father is the Vulcan Ambassador to the Federation? Unless Sarek pulled a few strings to keep it confidential for whatever reason (say to avoid preferential treatment) and that info was redacted, it would be there.

Kirk would be pretty lax not to look over the files of his top officers prior to taking command. You could argue that McCoy would also be in the know, since Spock was the only Vulcan on board and Bones would need ot know something about Spock's family for medical history purposes. He did know how old Sarek was, however knowing Sarek was going to retire, that info could have come from anywhere; Federation News, a Starfleef briefing, etc.

Eh, just sayin' is all.

Kirk and McCoy didn't know that T'Pau was also in Spock's family either in Amok Time! Vulcans don't like to brag!
