Prince Henry's Wedding

I’m still wondering why William and Harry were ever allowed to join the army. You’d think the royal family wouldn’t allow it, given how dangerous it is.

(Don’t get me wrong, though, I think it’s great that they did enlist. :techman: )

It's a family tradition. Charles served, Andrew served. Harry served 10 years in the British army, even went to Iraq. He left with the rank of Captain. He's really far down on the "throne" chain now, so he gets more freedom.

William graduated from Sandhurst and served in the RAF. He served as a rescue pilot until 2013 and later became an air-ambulance pilot. He left the service completely in 2017.

It think its more than tradition, its also a way of distilling the concept of patriotism, protocol and duty to ones country into young royals. That said the debate about Harry going to Iraq (before we all learnt the Army had already deployed him) shows that many agree with Mr. Laser Beam. Its dangerous not just for the royal, but also those around him(her). I doubt that George/Charlotte/Louis will be encouraged into the military, but its difficult to see what other honourable profession the next generation could be encouraged to do.

On topic, all the papers are reporting Meghan's father is not going to the wedding now because he feels he has let her down.

I thought he was deployed to Afghanistan first and because non-UK media didn't need to follow the embargo that was in place, a non-UK media source revealed he was there, making him a prime target and the soldiers he was deployed with.

The debate was about originally about Harry going into Iraq and the decision was not to deploy him because he was a target and made the soldiers around him an equal target (which my original post was right about). However you are quite right, when Germanys the Bild breached the embargo and revealed Harry had been deployed, it was to Afghanistan, not Iraq, as my post implies. My error.

Originally, monarchies were essentially what we would now call military dictatorships, so being well acquainted with the army was important and military service by kings and heirs has been a common expectation, even in constitutional systems. In the 20th century, Harry's great grandfather George VI was in combat in WW1 (as was his grandfather Prince Philip in WW2, but he was not royal at the time), and one of his great great uncles the Duke of Kent was killed in an air crash on non-combat service with the RAF in WW2.

As for the wedding, best of luck to them but really I couldn't care less about social occasions for extremely wealthy people that have no bearing on my life.

Roll on the republic. Let those who want a royal family be the ones who pay for them.
I will be surprised if this marriage lasts but while it does the uk press lead by The Daily Mail and The Sun are going to have a field day raking up every piece of dirt they can find on Megan's family. For the time being the heat is off lazy Kate and wills.

Spain had Don Carlos, and he wasn't of good mental health. His parents hat a very close family relationship.

Frail and mentally impaired people in monarchies had a tendency for suffering most unfortunate accidents...
They were too inbred until Lady Diana Spencer came along

I bet Harry actually feels relieved, since there’s really not a chance in hell that he ever becomes king.
This is why they don't mind him having a black mother in law.
If Ms Rachel Meghan Markle had any sense she would never marry into that family. Anyway good luck to them, I give them ten years and hope their first child looks like its maternal grandmother, the media would be clutching their pearls :nyah:

Have any of the royals actually raised objections to Meghan’s race? Or her previous divorce? Or the fact that she’s American? I’m not aware of anyone in the royal family having a problem with any of this.

And no, I don’t give a frog’s fat ass what the MEDIA thinks. I mean the actual royal family.

No one knows, but knowing Prince Philip's ability to put his foot in his mouth his response must have been his usual impolite self

Centuries and millennia ago, the king was expected to not only be a soldier, but also capable of leading his troops in war.

If modern leaders had to do that, I think we'd probably have a lot fewer wars.

Well he's 96 now, so she won't have to put up with very many more years of it.

I actually hope they have a happy and productive future. The wedding seemed to bring a lot inspiration and entertainment to many people.

Done and dusted.

I skipped to the few parts that I wanted to see: Meghan’s entrance, walk down the aisle, the vows, and the exit.

Harry’s reaction upon seeing her was priceless. I thought Meghan’s dress was very plain and boring but her veil was beautiful.

Plain so we could focus on that beautiful smile :) (I personally didn't like the tiara thingy. It reminded me of rolled up tin foil.)

I concur Harry's expression was priceless.
