Popular Sci-fi Shows You Dislike...

Buffy- Silly and, agian, not funny. Guess I'm just not a Whedon person.

Buffy isn't always intended to be funny. It's downright dark at times. And sometimes (especially early on) it was intended to be cheesy. Season 1 was shamelessly so most of the time. "I wear the cheese. It does not wear me." Buffy was one of those shows able to evoke pretty much any style it chose to on a given day, sometimes multiple styles per episode. Not many series can get away with that. Doctor Who is the only other one I can think of offhand, and even that would have difficulty getting as dark as Buffy did occasionally.

Are you sure you haven't projected your own expectations onto the experience?

Frankly, I don't understand the hate for it. Maybe it's not your thing (or maybe you THINK it isn't your thing now but will change your mind later.....I did), but it certainly did a great deal for the genre while it was on.

Besides, it gave us Angel, one of the strongest SF/F shows of the last decade. Angel is essentially all the strong points of Buffy without the sometimes-annoying teen aspects, and a more consistent narrative style.

Lost from J.J. Abrams :scream:, boring backstory flashbacks, dumb ideas like all the characters ran into each other before the plane crash, ridiculous polar bears, boring flash forwards....I don't know why this is still on tv

Tv series Dexter - lame  wooden acting, crap dialogue

New reimagined Battlestar Galactica, a somewhat interesting first season with great veteran actors like EJO, but after season 2.0 the show gets crap real fast. perhaps its because they ran out of Singer scripts to plagiarize? It's all depressing, boring political stuff and shock jock soap opera about who is sleeping with who. Of course there are still a number of former trekkies who worship the Temple of RonMoore and that other numbskull David Eick....oh yeah and "the cylons have a plan" has now been removed from the credits because the writers royally fucked this one up, i've seen fan fiction do a better job than these over paid twits.

Buffy = boring
What's even worse was Serenity whedon thinking he can make a good Firefly movie by killing off the most interesting characters and turning River into another kickboxing barbie
FAIL

StargateSG1 - post the whole Daniel Jackson thing, first they replace him with a scientologist, then Richard Dean Anderson goes on a permanent holiday, Daniel returns but finally we get the Ori nonsense and Tapping's stunt appearance on the Stargate Atlantis

Groening's Futurama totally mediocre since day 1 and will always come second place to funnier cartoon shows like South Park, Simpsons etc

X-files - don't get me wrong I love watching the odd episode of X-files but this series went on way too long

Most reincarnations of Star Trek TOS :shifty: ok each StarTrek spin offs had their moments, DS9 some great actors I thought the TNG film First Contact was great but overall adding the sum of quality they don't stand. DS9 is too un-Trekkie and more Babylon-5 like. I don't think any Trek spin offs hold a candle to the original. :(

The X-File - never liked it and I can't stand Gillian Anderson...a bag of cement would have been more interest in her role in my opinion.

Buffy/Angel - Found it mostly dull and boring.

Battlestar Galactica - Gave up at the end of the first season. I'm watching whatever the current season is mainly due to the lack of anything better on TV at the time and it falls between stuff I watch. I also dislike the actress that plays Starbuck.

Farscape - found it uninteresting.

Requesting permission to bear your offspring.

I also enjoyed S1 of BSG but it went crap REAL fast.

[sarcasm]Oh and here's another interesting thing this show does[/sarcasm]; let's have the annoying conceit where a character talks to another character only he can see, cuz, you know, that concept NEVER gets old fast. Oh and then let's introduce all kinds of new age religious mumbo jumbo bullshit because you know, these days, people are really not sick of religion at all!!! In fact, people WANT to watch shows about others' made up religions. OH HO and here's an even better idea, let's tie it all into Iraq, because that would be a BRAND NEW THING for Hollywood to do....we NEVER make commentary on real world events, so the whole Iraq angle would be BRAND NEW and people haven't really heard about it yet!!!!!

Stupid fuckwits.

I never got the love for Babylon 5, but then again I never could stomach enough of it to get to what was apparently "the good part".

Two votes for Dexter? a) not a scifi show, and b) absolutely brilliant in every way that matters. I know people are entitled to their opinions, but come on guys, what the hell?

I'll pick SG-1. I don't hate it, when I watch it I find it pretty entertaining in a brainless "I've seen this done on TNG but a bit better" sort of way, but I could never be bothered to watch it all. I still may one day though.

star wars. nuff said.
'Nuff? Not really. Why not detail why you don't like it? Despite it's long-running popularity and place in pop culture, there are plenty of people who don't like the franchise. Help make the thread more interesting and informative by talking some about your reasons why you don't care for SW?

Didn't we have this thread about 2 weeks ago?
And its a pretty boring one at that; people droning on about things they don't like. What thrilling reading

"oooh I don't like TV show X"
*shrugs* great, good for you mate
No one's forcing you to open the thread, much less read or comment about it.

My nominations (although "dislike" is probably too strong a word):

Firefly - derivative, uncreative, unoriginal and bland, featuring some of the dullest characters I've seen in any show.

nBSG - overpraised, overhyped, dreary claptrap featuring another set of excruciatingly boring characters in whom I couldn't have been less interested.

X-Files, post season five or so - by then it had disappeared up its own mythos and raised far too many questions, none of which even looked like being answered in any sort of timely fashion or with anything approaching credibility. Went from must-watch to couldn't-care-less accordingly.

Lots of people like these shows and that's fine. They simply do absolutely nothing whatsoever for me. To each their own. :bolian:

Voyager - Naff crew dynamic, poor actors, still watched it though

Farscape - fucking Muppets in space, no thanks.

Crusade - horrible garish design, terrible acting, absolutely no weight.

Original BSG - Just a terrible show, shallow characters, awful effects, cheap Star Wars knock-off in all respects.

Lexx - Stupid hair.

X-files s8 & 9, no explanation needed.

I was just about to say the same. It's more of a drama/crime procedural isn't it? And having just finished S1 and beginning S2, I think it's absolutely brilliant and laced with awesome dark humor. ::shrug::

As for a show that I don't like, it would have to be Smallville. I enjoyed it in the beginning, and at this point I've watched through the end of S5, but I'm bored with it now. I wish the show would stick more to the mythology of Superman and action than the Whining of the Lana(tm) and everyone going on and on about Clark's "secrets". This is a show that I think can benefit from a change of setting (ironic considering the title, I know).

Okay, first of all, Dexter is not sci-fi. Like...at all.

As for shows I dislike, that one is easy. Heroes. Everyone else must be watching a different show than I am cause the show I have seen features dreadful acting and storylines just a small step up from Smallville.

Re the criterion of popularity---I was being humorous, as the question really means "Popular on this bbs..." But taking the off-topic seriously for a moment, ratings would be pretty much the only reliable indicator of popularity. Word of mouth is anecdotal, by definition, and reviewers are not popular, also by definition.

The ratings criterion would apply primarily to prime time broadcasts. It is quite certain that Star Trek and TNG were very popular in syndication, and probable that SG-1 was also popular in syndication (it may have been prime time but it was on cable.) But Star Trek is officially a ratings loser---you know, the whole cancelation thing?--- while SG-1 is never claimed to be a popular series. TNG is acknowledged to have had high syndication ratings but no one in my knowledge admits to have watched it! If people won't admit watching it, how can it be popular?

But random strangers will admit watching X-Files and Lost. Ergo, the joke about those being the only popular scifi series.

PS Yes, I know a joke that has to be explained is a bad joke. I'm keeping my day job.

Fair enough. Although I'd argue that people won't even admit to liking the X-Files anymore--look at the results from the new movie!

The X-Files is one of my favourite shows of all time, I just thought the I Want to Believe wasn't very good. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't as good as it could or should have been.

Dislike, strongly:

Both Stargates. Absolute utter crap.

Anything at all by Joss Whedon, most significantly that Buffy shit. Awful, quippy, insufferably "clever" dialogue. It just makes me want to kick every single character and writer right in the head. And no, I don’t care if these piles of crap were intended to be cheesy and annoying. That really just makes it worse.

Smallville. Teen angsty bullshit with a little superhero bullshit thrown in. No.

Hate, resent and hate again:

Seasons 8 & 9 of The X-Files.

Can't be bothered with:

Babylon 5, Farscape (muppets ), Lexx, Heroes
I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of shows here, but that would be because I never bothered with them…

I really, really enjoyed the film, but I was more discussing popular sentiment towards the franchise. :)

I'm sure you were, but that's true of any science fiction show. People will be disavowing their liking for major network successes like Heroes and Lost in a few years time.

Really? So, is there nothing you like? Nothing you can get behind? You just trashed much of what was interesting about TV scifi in the last 15 years.(Lexx excluded). And what the heck is wrong with Muppets?(Careful, bro, you're treading on my childhood friends there....):p

I hate to admit it but the reason I never got into Farscape originally was because the muppets distracted my suspension of disbelief. I never held it against the show, though. I know it's my own failing. The nice thing is that I've got all of it to look forward to.

I can't think of any shows I actively disliked, though LEXX was definitely not my preferred humor.

Doctor Who - Tuned out after one season. Anybody who had been watching sci-fi for the last 10-20 years would know there's not one original idea in the series. As the only sci-fi fan in the family, I tell them that other shows like the Star Treks have done similar things (often better), but they seem to have some kind of prejudice towards them. Maybe Doctor Who is just 'casual' enough that it can be acceptable family viewing.

Highlander: The Series - Probably more fantasy than sci-fi, but I'm often told how awesome the series is because it allows the ideas and themes of immortality to be spread out and developed over several episodes rather than contained into a single movie. There must be something wrong with me then, because I didn't care for a single character and many great ideas went unfulfilled or were botched. The original movie is great, the series is not.
