Ooh, thanks for that, Sloan. That sounds most intriguing. I've always thought the advanced civilizations that were hinted at were something that needed to be revisited in a coherent way.

FYI- The 'bluegills' were later revealed in the DS9-Relaunch novels to be genetically modified versions of the regular Trill symbionts. The novels had the members of Kurlan society (an ancient civilization mentioned occasionally on TNG) modifying the symbionts genetically to make them resistant to a virus. After years of modifications, the parasites became what we saw in TNG, and the Trill killed 4 million of their own people to try and contain them (which failed).

It was also explained that the 'Conspiracy' seen in the Next Generation episode was part of an elaborate scenario in which the parasites would have exacted their vengence on Trill society, and wiped them out - as the Trill symbionts and the parasites are anethema to one another.

Conspiracy? That got me hooked on the whole Trek concept. I was only 7 or 8 when I saw that episode. Blew me away.

I'm actually glad there wasn't a follow-up to "Conspiracy," because I think they would have been completely defanged--ala the Borg--eventually...

I can see it now, an episode featuring a friendly parasite alien named "Stinger"...

Maybe they could've become the Trill, instead of (as the novels had it) the other way around. That would've put an edge on them (the Trill that is).

I always wondered about the Trill--how did they, in their prehistory, find out that gut-slugs were a good thing?

i always thought naked now could have been followed up... instead of Yar dying in that stupid way have her doa twilight zone kind where she gets knocked up by Data with some sort of nanobot.
