Re: POLL: What are you looking Forward to most in
I'm compelled to vote other. I rather like the Archer/T'Pol dynamic, and would like to see it continue, at a glacial Mulderian and Scullyesque pace. If we take the characters as given, with T'Pol the oldest crewmember, the idea of two relatively mature, driven individuals, both with their own load of prejudices slooowwwwly finding their way towards some mutual regard is an interesting one. But I don't want it rammed down my throat. A glance held a half beat too long can speak volumes in this sort of thing. The issue of Trip/T'Pol, which seems to have people so exercised right now doesn't seem to work so well, at least for me. Now we're, or at least the producers are, not talking about the characters, a (what, 60 something?)Vulcan woman and a much younger, and relatively immature subordinate. So I guess we and they are just talking about Trineer and Blalock, young attractive eye candy.Which will soon enough lead the producers to wondering if his rogaine is going to do the job or if they need to start thinking about getting him a hairpiece, or if maybe Jolene looks a little puffy today? A bad thing to put actors through, especially when they're doing such good work otherwise. My only other desire regarding A/T is that he do half the adapting necessary to making the relationship work. I am really weary of the "slowly stumbling towards being human" thing that seems so part and parcel of Star Trek. Data, EMH, Seven. It's tired, and it does so seem that the humanity they're stumbling toward is a kind of white, male, middle aged, upper middle class kind of deal. It's insulting. A thought about the series moving to a story arc format- I agree that it allows much more complex and nuanced story telling, but does it not also exclude new viewers? If you don't catch the train coming out of the station, it's hard to get on. Remember Murder 1? One long arc, and people stopped watching because they couldn't figure out what was going on, and couldn't be bothered to try.Plenty of other things to watch. So maybe not the best idea if you don't want the show cancelled. I'd like them to use the rest of the cast. Any ensemble show has central and less central cast members, but knowing the second bananas back story does not mean we know them. We need to see behaviors. NYPD Blue does this superbly. Enterprise's guys are virtually interchangeable. These are good actors that deserve better. So what I really want is better writing-too much to ask? Less strip mining of old Star Trek scripts and popular movies, less "ripped from the headlines" suliban/taliban, xindi/iraqi stuff- instead character driven dialogue, exciting stories, surprises, maybe a touch of humor. Too much to ask? I guess we should be glad that UPN doesn't have as itchy a trigger finger as Fox did for Firefly.Maybe the producers of Enterprise will get a chance to get the show on track. I hope so. Oooh, but I also hope I don't see a Vulcan playing tonsil hockey.
