Plinkett gets REVENGE

I agree - I think it's clear no actor was receiving good direction. Hell, look at Natalie Portman's wooden ass performance in the prequels and her amazing performance in Black Swan. Doesn't take a genius to see there's a ton of talent that was just wasted there.

Or Samuel L. Jackson. A guy that's consistently portrayed as being 'larger than life' in either his serious, comedic, or downright zany roles... is somehow turned into cardboard for the only time in his acting career, something apparently only the talents of Lucas and a green-screen film studio could pull off.

Just look at the performances in Avatar, compare Saldana's performance in Avatar to her performance in Star Trek... really, "green screen film studio" has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with it.

Blame it on Lucas if you want, but for crying out loud, please stop that green screen/CGI bitching, people, please!

Hmm? But it clearly DID affect performances. Did you see the part of Plinkett's review where he showed how all the characters walk a few steps, and stop, even when they're supposedly in a hurry to get somewhere, because the actors are actually in a confined green-screen papered room rather than the giant space-hangar they appear to be in?

No, they didn't see that because they didn't watch these reviews. They just hate them because they effectively and excellently deconstruct the prequels. That is a great segment though. Especially the one where they should be moving quickly after Anakin reveals that Palpy is the Sith lord or the one where Obi-Wan doesn't react even slightly to the quick movements of General Grievous.

That's really the director's fault, and has nothing to do with the studio.

In the movie, wasn't the Republic transport like *right there*. It's not like Kirk who had to go through several decks.

The point was that it doesn't matter WHERE they need to get to, the point was that the pace set by the film at that point should have probably picked up and we should have felt a sense of excited, urgent action - not a turn and keep walking and talking in shot/reverse shot.

Also, the point was that clearly they were on a little, constrained green screen set that allowed for no real range of motion.

In an interview about a film she did after SW, Natalie said "It was nice to be directed for a change instead of being told where to stand so I wouldn't block the effects." :rommie:

lol - too true. Did you ever see the behind the scenes footage from AotC where she's looking at GL like he's insane as he's telling her to run through the chompers in the droid factory? I think she even says something like "are you serious" and he assures her the effect will look great

:guffaw:

Please, for sanity's sake, everyone please stop implying that Portman isn't a bad actress in general.

Lots and lots of critics think that she's a fantastic actress, so there might be something to it, but I've never enjoyed any of her performances, to be honest.

I thought Hayden Christensen was really good in Shattered Glass.

Yeah, there's a pretty general consensus that she's quite good when her co star isn't tennis balls on a green screen.

"Beautiful girls" with Timothy Hutton is the only movie in which she actually appeared natural and in-character. Her facial expressions usually look completely fake and forced, and every time I see her somewhere, it's always just Natalie Portman I'm seeing, never the actual character.

I liked him even better in "Life as a house" for which he received a Golden Globe nomination (though Globes were never any real measure for anything).

Do you, like, get payed to mention green screen in your posts? You made your point already, geeez...

A good actor, working with a good director, doesn't even need a set to give a solid performance.

Movies like "300" or "Sin City" were shot almost entirely before green screen, and I don't remember any of the actors sucking in either of them.

Don't get all snitty with me - do you get paid every time you kiss Lucas' fat ass?

Whether or not 300 or Sin City were good movies is debatable too - I think 300 was abysmal (though stylish) and Sin City was okay - but any good performances in either could probably be attributed to their superior directors, don't you think? Also the fact that while the backgrounds may have been CG, they were all still acting against real people with real props in both of those movies. They also both looked like cartoons/comics (which they were admittedly supposed to) - was the prequel trilogy also supposed to look like a cartoon/comic?

And what did they do in the SW prequels?

I don't like the prequels either, but you're so totally over the top in your criticism it's not funny.

I didn't bother seeing it. Pretty tired of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. So I probably would enjoy a good RLM thrashing of it.
