Please recommend me a good show!

I am kinda convinced to try Lost again sometime. Maybe sitting down and watching most of it in one swoop really makes a difference. I'll reserve that for vacations, though. :D

Some of the shows you suggested I've already seen but forgotten to mention. I also love Life on Mars (UK), Jekyll, Deadwood, and Journeyman. Torchwood also lost me.

I have never heard of Big Bang Theory even though it's on after How I Met Your Mother because the only way I learn about American programming is by cruising the internet and picking up the names which are mentioned most often. :)

Alias is one of those shows I admit to having eschewed because I watched the trailers at a time when I was flooded with good shows, didn't immediately like it, and then condescendingly ignored it.
Maybe I'll check it out after all, too.

Thanks to all of you who have given me some input. My list of shows to watch is chock full and I'm sure I'll find something in there!

Fantastic, people! Keep it coming! :)
I've never heard of Weeds or The Big Bang Theory

Weeds is a great show that goes downhill a little every season, but still good. Plus Mary-Louise Parker naked is always nice.

The Practice and Boston Legal are also great, but Boston Legal isn't for everyone, they are quite socially liberal and that pisses some idiots off.

I almost forgot-there are two seasons of The Riches. If you liked Pushing Daisys(in terms of quirkiness) then this is must see TV. Eddie Izzard as a Gypsy con man, along with his grifter family. Nothing even close to it on TV in the last 20 years. It would make me wince and cover my eyes-with my fingers spread so I didn't miss anything.

I'd highly recommend The Wire--at times dark, but always entertaining. Boston Legal is also very good, although I've only seen the first three seasons. The West Wing was strong throughout, although it struggled a little bit during the fifth year. And Six Feet Under is very good, although it has a weak third season, too.

I thought the 4th season of Six Feet Under was the weakest, but maybe it's the third. There is a storyline dealing with the crazy hippie woman and the one that something horrible happens to David that just are horribly written or done..

Here's some of the voiceovers from Burn Notice if it helps:

"Once somebody sends a guy with a gun after you, things are only going to get worse. But like it or not, you've got work to do. For a job like getting rid of the drug dealer next door, I'll take a hardware store over a gun any day. Guns make you stupid. Better to fight your wars with duct tape. Duct tape makes you smart... Every decent punk has a bulletproof door. But people forget walls are just plaster. Hopefully you get him with the first shot. Or the second... Now he's down and waiting for you to come through the front door. So you don't come through the front door."

"I don't like stealing cars, but sometimes it's necessary. I have rules, though: I'll keep it clean, and if I take your car on a workday, I'll have it back by five."

"Getting information from a club girl means buying drinks. It's no problem with an operational slush fund. It's a big problem if you're spending cash scrounged from your mom's purse."

"Securing a room isn't about walls. A determined captive can kick through plasterboard, but he can't bite through steel bars, or pry out screws with his fingers. Though it might be fun to watch him try."

"There are a couple of ways to make a car bullet resistant. $60,000 dollars worth of titanium siding will do the job. Or you can pick up a couple extra copies of the yellow pages from your local phone company. Most non-armor-piercing bullets will only penetrate a phone book to the depth of an inch or two. Behind a layer of steal, it's more like a 1/4 of an inch. Commercially available foam sealants will keep your tires rolling long enough to get you out of danger. For the windows, dual-layer high-density Plexiglas is your best bet. It's expensive, but bullet-proof glass is not the sort of thing you skimp on."

There are some good suggestions here, although I haven't seen anyone mention The Wire yet.

All suggestions have been noted down and will be tried in due time. Thank you again. :)

For this weekend I decided to try The Big Bang Theory and Burn Notice. I think those might fit my current mood the most.

I'll keep you updated on how much I love you or how severly disappointed I am in all of you.

^Actually it is filmed in front of a live studio audience and from talking with people I know who attended the taping they say they really don't even think that canned laughter was added afterwards.

But honestly I don't even notice the laughing in Big Bang Theory since I am usually laughing as well.

The nice thing about a sitcom like this is that it is easy to give it a try. The episodes are so short that if you end up not liking it you don't feel like you've wasted a lot of time.

 you really picked some great ones! Cannot wait for this one to come back on Thursday.

Just watching the promo on repeat.

Agreed!

Burn Notice really has been a good ride so far! I just finished the first season. Fun dialogues, interesting characters, and I love the voiceovers.
Definitely helped me past my Pushing Daisies Blues, for which I feel guilty now.

I have to admit, though, I didn't quite get into The Big Bang Theory.

Still, a quota of 50/50 so far. You guys are doing really well on the very important love-o-meter. :techman:

I really don't get the love for that show. The jokes are pretty tired nerd humor. Not funny at all. Look out for Better Off Ted when it hits DVD, which is a lot dorkier and funnier.

If you like Burn Notice, look for Leverage starring Timothy Hutton and Christian Kane from Angel. I don't know if it's on DVD yet but season one was really fun.

1. Give LOST another try. I gave up on it once myself after the first 4 or 5 episodes. However, 5 - 6 months ago I gave it another try and stuck with it, and it is now one of my favorite shows ever - probably 3rd after DS9 and B5, with Buffy in 4th, BSG in 5th, and The X-Files in 6th. Seems like we have similar tastes, because in addition to the shows already named, I also loved Wonderfalls and PD (although I'm not as much into Dead Like Me), Farscape, Firefly, etc.... and non-scifi shows like NCIS, Dexter, and Bones.

2. Try Roswell. It is only 3 seasons, but it's a good show and had a good resolution ending.

3. If you are up to try a cop show but are bored (like I am) with the CSIs, give Cold Case a try. It is supposedly part of the CSI universe, but you'd never know it without the Bruckheimer name tacked on the ending. It is not nearly as formulaic and cookie-cutter as the CSIs are. Plus, it has great period music and the flashbacks to all the crimes are interesting because they are set in all sorts of time periods....I think the earliest flashback being 1929 or something. There are no DVD sets because there is no way they'd be able to get the music rights (their 2-part season finale was set entirely to Pearl Jam music, for example, and they have had shows set entirely to Bruce Springsteen, Elvis, etc.). But it's on cable (TNT maybe?). And it's interesting seeing these crimes portrayed over the past 90 years or so! Plus, they do more character development of the detectives' private lives, which is nice - makes you care about them more, I think.

Other random comments:

a) I don't know about Fringe. I watch it, but in truth, I watch it pretty much for only ONE character - Walter, who I think is one of the best characters currently on TV. The main character, Olivia, gets on my last nerve (thinks she runs the entire FBI single-handedly and is the only one on earth with a conscience - I can't stand her!)...but I put up with Olivia's pontifications, just to watch Walter. He is all kinds of awesome! Walter is the kind of guy who Fox Mulder and the Lone Gunmen would hang out with.

b) Boston Legal is great. However, if you happen to be very right-wing, it might get on your nerves because it is fairly liberal in it's viewpoints. Nevertheless, Shatner and Spader have had some of the most brilliant moments ever on TV....and the show is worth watching for that alone, in truth. Denny Crane and Alan Shore have one of the most brilliantly portrayed male friendships ever.

It helps if you are a science nerd. My boyfriend is getting a PhD in Physics and LOVES the jokes on Big Bang Theory, he is always laughing at the physics stuff. And I am laughing at the character personalities because I see on a daily basis just how true to life they are!

I would definitely give "The Tudors" a try. Very interesting show..I'm just now getting interested in it! :D
BTW, glad you watch "NCIS". I adore that show mainly for Mark Harmon and Micheal Weatherly. He's a hoot and hotter than a two dollar pistol! But I also find him to be somewhat of an arrogant, self absorbed pig. :D

I have a PhD in astronomy, and Big Bang Theory hits scarily close to home for me. I love the fact that there is actually a sitcom in which you will actually see the occasional debate about string theory.
