Please help my wife and I find a series to enjoy together

Three words:

Freaks And Geeks

You'll laugh, cry, and laugh some more. One of the finest one season shows ever.

Dead Like Me is an awesome suggestion, and only two seasons long. Freaks and Geeks is another great one, only one season.

If you are interested in something short, I'd go with Wonderfalls. That show is great, and I think it has an appeal for women, even though it's quasi-scifish. I think it's only like, 13 episodes, and is available on DVD for a very reasonable price. It's really funny, cute,...and very original. And even though it was canceled, the storyline for the planned 1st season of the show is complete. It doesn't leave you on any nasty cliffhangers like some canceled shows do. It's a complete arc-based story.

If you want something with a bunch of seasons, and you are pretty 'mainstream' in your tastes (which it sounds like you are), I'd go with NCIS. It's often categorized in the same bucket as the CSIs...but I don't think it's much like them at all. This is a show with exciting investigative stories, but interestingly (for a cop-like show) a tremendous sense of humor. Also, a very wide range of characters among the main cast - something to appeal to just about anyone. This is probably the funniest cop-like show I've ever seen that wasn't a sitcom. Also, I think it's about the only show currently on TV which has actually GROWN it's audience each and every year over the 5+ years it's been on. More and more people are getting into it now - last I heard it was, like #6 or something in the ratings.

If you get HBO, you'll want to watch The Pacific miniseries when it comes out later this year. But watch Band of Brothers first.

My first gut reaction Friday Night Lights. GREAT show. Got the football spect to appeeal to the guys but is at it's heart a really good family drama.

Ok.. I'd say for stuff that leans towards the guy side I'd suggest Chuck, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Smallville and Deadwood.

If you want to earn some major brownie points and she's a lady who likes dramas maybe try more modern show Brothers and Sisters (hilariou scenes when the family gets together and quabbles), The Tudors or Big Love or some older shows like Dawson's Creek (the Pacey or Dawson debate) and The OC (Seth and Summer are hilarious).

We have a week off coming up next month and we would like to get some DVDs, Blu-Rays or Appletv Files of a series to watch marathon style.

We've gone through Arrested Develpment and Flight of the Conchords which she liked "ok". She is very picky, I love them both.
Please help!
WHOH! she saw Arrested Develpment and ONLY liked it ok?:wtf: WOW! dude.. I laughed so hard my FAMILY began wondering what the hell I was watching! ( I watched in my room thanks to g4 ) man I don't know what to say,but youre wife IS pickey ( NO OFFENCE)

Here's the thing that makes it hard - she will watch an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm or Arrested Development and laugh her ass off the entire time, then at the end she'll go "meh, that was ok."

It's crazy. As for your other question I love animation, she hates it and won't even consider it.

For those saying Freaks and Geeks, I adore it. I introduced it to her but she only made it through 2 episodes.

NCIS - she would never watch that in a million years. She has a great distain for mainstream things...so any show that is somewhat formulaic, she won't even consider. For example, I enjoy Psych and Monk but she says "oh you like that 80's garbage" just because in her mind, I guess they are retreads of murder she wrote or something.

Great suggestions everyone...I think we will look into Rome.

I'm not sure if Damages would interest you, though its one of my must watch shows. iTunes is now offering episodes for .99

The BBC's current Robin Hood. The first two seasons are out on DVD. Fun show. Has a healthy mix of action, romance, drama, and humor. Good characterization and the show has some really surprising plot twists, especially in the second season.

I'll echo Temis' recommendation of HBO's "Big Love." It's oustanding. It's such a nuanced, outrageous, funny, thoughtful, and bizarre depiction of a polygamous family that it lends itself to gender discussion. It's also filled with outrageous characters that you can't stop talking about and fantastic performances, especially from the three wives. It doesn't take sides.

My second recommendation is the CW's Supernatural. It's not Buffy redux. It's for grownups. The horror aspects are perks; it's the story of the Winchester family--brothers Dean and Sam--and their larger than life bond that's the real draw. Also, it's funny as hell.

Burn Notice. Season 1 is available on DVD and it's only 11 episodes. Lots of fun to watch...

I don't know if your wife would like it-but DON'T deprive yourself! Clever, witty, cool and the main characters are vivid-watch one episode and you'll instantly remember who everone is. (However, the pilot is not how the series ends up-it was obviously subjected to some re-tooling after the pilot was made. For the better, IMO.)

She may just not be a TV show person. What I mean is, she may like to watch TV, but doesn't get as much enjoyment out of particular shows as most people do.

For instance, my family rents a lot of movies and my mom ALWAYS falls asleep during them, no matter what time of day or how good the movie is. But if you ask her later, she will sometimes say "oh that movie was great!" But overall she's just not a movie person.
