Playmates Toys

I already had a loose Benzite, but now I found him in the box with his goodies for $3, so I bought another one :D
He has most of the earlier Mordock outfit and the later Mendon moisturizer.

They also had SF uniform Q in the box, who was never on my radar, because I'd rather have him in the judge outfit. But he was also $3 and I bought him for the crystal, Enterprise and Earth goodies, and found out he can even hold the Earth. Then later I realized he's a perfect display companion to Tapestry Ensign Picard!

And someone else had a pile of Burger King toys, and among them was the 09 shuttle that brought them to the Enterprise, and that was behind the big Spock & Spock meeting scene, for $2 :D

It looks better in person, the camera flash makes it too bright.

This is how it looked before... far too bland.

And finally a good look at the unreleased phaser rifle and spinnyprise

That's great! Probably the best view of the phaser rifle, it was an incredible looking replica. Such a shame it was never released!

The Excelsior is interesting - does look like the pre-Generations model. I didn't know that was ever on Playmates' radar. The Engineering set was obviously sold in Generations packaging, and then the Excelsior was retooled as the Ent-B for the movie.

Cool to see the Ferengi ship too. The alien ship that got away, along with the Galor from the DS9 line.

It looks like Picard and Q are kissing the heads of their figures.

I only really ever collected the big electronic ships (and the occasional figure of Picard or Data), so I would have been all over that Ferengi ship.

The Excelsior they released was the same model as the B, with all those additions, so it's interesting that they had a correct one planned.

The rifle I've only seen in one ad picture before, it's incredible it was so far along that it had lights and sounds already! Maybe it ended up being too big

Yeah, it would have taken up too much shelf space and not been profitable I guess.

I always wondered what they might have done as the next Ent-D playet, if they did one. Sickbay would probably be the obvious one - they did a micro scale one for the Innerspace line which was really cool. It combined the sickbay set with Data's lab, so you could recreate them trying to deprogramme Locutus at the end of BoBW.

I'd imagine the rifle would have come disassembled and then you snapped the components together - that probably would have kept the box proportions around the size of the starship toys.

Considering Main Engineering didn’t hit until Generations, the next playset might have been the E-E bridge to coincide with First Contact/Insurrection.

Here's the rifle ad:

That's one mini playset I'm still looking for. They could've made a conference room as well, and there were plans for multi-room playsets:

the grail for me of unreleased Playmates stuff is still the TOS bridge.

More announced and unrealized ideas:

I loved the Innerspace line. It was perfect for me because you got a ship/playset and mini figures for the same price as a standard 4.5" figure. The big Enterprise-D was great, and I also had the phaser/alien planet, Tricorder/sickbay and Communicator/transporter room.

The one thing that really annoyed me was that the female figures couldn't sit down, so Deanna and Beverly just had to stand around awkwardly.
