Playmates Toys

I loved those figures, even with the odd proportions. There was something just so vibrant and colorful about them. Put together, my little brother and I eventually had Locutus, Quark, Ricker with torn uniform, Geordi and a rando Romulan. One of my favorite accessories was just the colored dilithium crystals. Oh, and the weapons. They had plastic bits that showed they were firing!

Weren't those holsters meant for the tricorders? At least that's what I did with mine.
They were. I still tried. I mean, that's what the Star Trek encyclopedia showed the holsters as being for :)

Besides, the tricorders were often open, not closed, making them very difficult to fit in to the holster.

Maybe they figured the phaser by itself would be more easily misplaced or something.

I thought the open tricorders fit in the holsters just fine, if you make sure it's face out, and push it all the way down.

I just thought of something else. My Geordi figure is the one with the removable visor. And he has a big silver/gray mark on his face because some paint transferred from the visor.

They didn’t build the beams into the TOS phasers though. They would have looked very strange if they had.

Even in the first wave of figures, Gowron's disruptor didn't have a beam so they were always a bit scattergun. The worst was the Voyager figures where they stopped even bothering to paint the phaser silver and the beam orange, so you had Captain Janeway wielding a bright pink baseball bat.

Speaking of Playmates, the bridge is awesome. I couldn't find the TNG guys, so here's a parallel universe where Captain Sisko got an upgrade.

Also I can't find Bashir.

And each character had a different color for their accessories. So Tom Paris's phaser was silver-gray with a silver-gray beam!

Yeah, the accessories felt a little more cartoonish as time went on.

Here’s a question for the customisers... I’ve attempted the ‘boil and pop’ method of pulling off a figure’s head. That’s the easy part. Trying to replace it seems an impossible task, as the head always seems too big for the hole! Does anyone have any tips? I’m soaking the body and head in boiling water to make them malleable.

I’m desperate to make a Riker figure without rips in his uniform you see...

Yeah I found the best way is not even to pop the head off because I've ended up ripping the neck joint.

My approach is to soak the figure for a few mins, then pop out the shoulder sockets, and use a pair of needle nose pliers to crack open the whole torso. Then you can replace parts as needed and glue the whole thing back together.

That's how I did the DS9 crew in the grey uniforms. I'm trying to do the TOS crew in TWOK uniforms but finding it hard to get the parts for reasonable prices.
