Inspired by Tony (LordSarvain), I built my own TOS ship to patrol the borders of Federation territory. :) She is not finishid yet, of course!

I gotta try Sketchup. I'll never be able to afford a real 3D program like 3DS

Just give it a try Forbin! You´ll be surprised with the results you can have in a few hours (yes, hours!). And you can do good renderings using the free software named Kirkythea (therefore, I still didn´t play with this one). ;)

You need a separate program to render with, is that correct? Sketchup doesn't render by itself?

Correct. Kerkythea is a free rendering program. It just has terrible documentation.

Truth to be told, after years of using Sketchup I sort of regret it. While it has a great learning curve, it also uses an entirely different methodology from other 3d software such as Blender. It makes it very hard to "relearn" how to use most other software. From a long term point of view you are better off taking the harder road of learning Blender first.

I learned 3D with the Amiga, with Sculpt 3D and Caligari TruSpace. Lately I've been fiddling with our copy of 3DS at work, but I admit that while I know all the basics, I've never managed anything that could be called advanced in all these years of playing around. I just find 3D difficult.
