Playing with Sketchup again....

A new WIP, this time from TOS.

I feel your impusle engines can be defined a lot better. Heck, you could even make that whole aft portion on either side of the shuttlebay into an impulse engine and it would look good! Might I also suggest to make the shuttlebay as wide as the "secondary" hull, so that the feel as being part of one whole? If only for shits 'n giggles ;-)

Modelling wise: are those "handlebars" on the aft components? Because it looks like they mess up the geometry and that usually happens if they're not. If you make them a little bit smaller so that they fall "into" the width of that specific side, it probably won't do that whole segmenting of it all. Also: is the endcap smoothed out or not? Same problem: lots of segmenting there in the render.

I like this kind of shape. Feels like a perimeter action ship and seeing all those RCS thrusters makes it look like it can maneuver very fast. Very nice :)

Oh yeah, as you, I´m not happy with the impulse engines. I´ll try other ways.
But I like of the shuttlebay the way it is. :)

You're totally right. Trying to fix that error, I found a lot more of geometry errors. I believe I will have to rebuild the nacelle....

It´s cause the small extrude I did to the "plates". Don´t turned out as I expected...

Thanks Borgman! This is my intention.
For now, I´m going to redo a lot of things.... Well, I´ll try to make it better. Thanks for the suggestions and tips!

@Kaiser: Thanks!

Do you have the Tools on Surface suite installed? I can also heartily recommend the Weld plugin: if you incorporate it into your work flow (welding edges as soon as you're almost sure you're not going to be doing anything with them for the coming time), it will make botched edges like that largely a thing of the past.

I have the surface tools. All of them very good I must say.
But.... forgot the weld. I´ll take a look.

One more time, thanks!!

Thank you Chris!
Always good to see a compliment from you, my master!
Can you suggest something for the impulse engines? :)

I learned 3D with the Amiga, with Sculpt 3D and Caligari TruSpace. Lately I've been fiddling with our copy of 3DS at work, but I admit that while I know all the basics, I've never managed anything that could be called advanced in all these years of playing around. I just find 3D difficult.

There's DOGA-L3, if you want to build 3D by "gluing together" predefined parts.

Thanks Bernard!
Well, after to correct a lot of mesh errors, I decided it was the time for the first rendering test. Just to see how it is going. There´s still a lot to do, but it don´t turnned out that bad, don´t you think? :)

Mesh built in Sketchup 8. Renderend with the default settings in Kerkythea.

Wonderful design, it feels like a good Ambassador-era step between the Miranda and the Nebula. The forward deflector is an especially good element. The only quibble I have is the lower set of launchers, because it doesn't seem like there's any room behind them for the actual tubes. That might just be a matter of perspective though.

Looking good! I'm in the process of trying to get the hang of SketchUp, but with no prior 3D experience, it's definitely a process. I like the TOS design you posted especially; I can see some ENT-era influences in it, particularly the dorsal view.
