Planet Hulk

I just watched the animated Planet Hulk flick. Hulk gets sent to another planet where he gets to put a beat down on some aliens-Gladiator style. I never read the comic so I was able to catch the story that leads up to World War Hulk. Hulk was intelligent and could speak. I like it better than big, dumb Hulk. Did anyone else here see it? What did you think of it?

I've seen it twice and loved it despite the alterations made from the comic book. I have read that they were made because the animators wanted this to be a primarily a Hulk story and so there were elements that were taken out, such as the ending, No-Name Queen Brood, and Beta Ray Bill substituted for Silver Surfer (due to rights issues). I really enjoyed it though and loved the Thor appearance.

Saw it a few weeks ago. Thought it was a pretty decent adaptation of the comic run. Was wondering why they felt the need to replace Silver Surfer with Beta Ray Bill though. Is there some kind of Surfer embargo or something?

I'm just really hoping they follow it up with an animated version of World War Hulk.

It's not complicated at all! Here's a brief rundown of rights issues that also helps explain the Post-Crises DCU, any questions about NG Evangelion, Tea-Party Philosophy, as well as why *everything* Joey Q has done is divinely inspired :

"Now, the players on the Saint Louis Wolves Baseball Team have some very unusual names : Who's On First, What's On Second, and I Don't Know's On Third. Any questions?"

I liked the vid; I liked Beta Ray Bill as a Surfer-sub (He actually appeared on the Surfer's short-lived show, IIRC) and was happy to see the story 90% intact. Two nits : Young Red Prince looked a lot like Aang from A:TLA, and the lack of explanation reagrding the bumping-up of Hulk from 'Smash' to Joe Fixit level intelligence.

Grade : B+ / A- , with the bonus that either we will see WWH, or this adventure will stand alone as a happy ending for a character that never gets one.

How did Hulk get smart? I assume it was just something he had going on previous to the Planet Hulk story. They don't need to explain it for me to enjoy the show, but I am curious.

I don't see how they could do "World War Hulk" now since they dramatically altered the ending of "Planet Hulk" one of Hulk's motivations for returning to Earth is wanting revenge for what he held the Illuminati responsible for what happened to Caiera as well as for sending him to Skaar in the first place.

Hulk in the comic wasn't really smart but allowed Bruce to help him out kind of...there's an important scene from the comic that was not included in the film where Hulk reveals Bruce Banner and she accepts both of his halves. I guess for time constraints they just decided to make a smart Hulk and not reveal Banner. He has a kind of internal debate with himself in the comic IIRC. It's been a while since i read it.

I've read the book but not seen the movie yet, out here on the 15th apparantly, (while we still haven't got Justice League New Frontier). I don't really follow the comics though so I too assumed that the slightly smarter hulk was something now common in Marvel comics and that the Hulk smash was just a thing from the nineties.
I'm looking forward to watching this and have been told that they end it slightly early so that we don't get the obvious cliffhanger. Didn't know about beta-ray though.

In the comics they never explained Hulk's new intelligence either. He does act like Grey Hulk though doesn't he?

Yes he's reminiscent of Grey Hulk...over time Hulk even comes to accept Bruce as does Caiera as I mentioned in my previous post. That particular scene is one of my favorite from the book and I'm disapointed that it wasn't included in the animated series.

In the comics, the Hulk has often been intelligent even while in his green state. Fans have dubbed him the "Grayvage" Hulk, because he's green, but acts like he's the gray Hulk.

Officially though I think this Hulk incarnation is mainly referred to as "The Green scar".

The net result of the comic book storyline was a Hulk who was stronger than he'd ever been with Banner's intellect (at least in the background, carefully calculating the effects of his actions) and with a far more cunning, tactical mind - needless to say, this Hulk was almost completely unstoppable.

It was a pretty good flick, but I definitely enjoyed "Hulks Versus" more. I really REALLY hope they make "World War Hulk" because that would make for the greatest cartoon movie ever. Just lots of colorful spandex heroes getting the **** smacked out of 'em. And this movie doesn't invalidate WWH at all, it just ended before the ship blew up, that's all. That would just be the opening of the next movie. Happy Hulk with Wifey looking out from the palace, looking down at the wrecked ship... boom.

I haven't watched it yet, but in the comics it's the 'illuminati' group who banishes Hulk from the planet.

Black Bolt, Prof X, Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, Reed Richards and Namor (although Namor opposes it and ends up fighting Iron Man over it). But did the movie present it in this way?

and if so why is Reed Richards(Fantastic Four owned by Fox) able to be used, but Silver Surfer(owned by FOX) is not? Sometimes this whole franchise rights thing makes no sense.
