Pike confirmed for Abrams' "Star Trek"

Cruise would be a terrible Pike and he wouldn't play him anyway. If Pike is in this movie he is probably not a major player in this one most likely so it'll probably be some relative unknown playing him. But James Marsters isn't a bad pick of the dream candidates.

He was 41 earlier this year I believe Captain. I'm not sure how old Jeffrey Hunter was during filming of the Cage or how old the character was supposed to be but I imagine 35-40. Lets assume he was 35 and that this movie will be set 8 or 9 years after the events of the Cage, that puts Fox fairly near the age were looking for. Also its very possible that this film will cover different periods in Kirk and Spocks early careers so theres no knowing at this point which time period we will see Pike in.

I thought Tom Cruise had been shown the door by Paramount?
not fis acting but his production company. They'd be fools not to sign him to act in one of their movies.

I think we'll see Pike when he turns over command of the Enterprise to Kirk.

Maybe Shatner could play kirk's dad. :D

i postd the same thought in the TrekToday News message thread...i mean, why not? He wouldn't be that old for the role, right?

Though i think he ought to have some different features (i.e. facial hair, but more "natural" ont he top of his head)...that way fans who really wanted to see him in can, but others (i.e. more casual fans) might not notice.
He would be too old. If Kirk's about 25, then his father ought to be 45-55 ish. Shatner as Kirk's grandad, maybe a silent cameo watching with pride at the ceremony as his grandson gets command of this great ship, then yep to that.
Maybe Jim Kirk wasn't born until Papa Kirk was in his 40s?

^ Could be. We know precisely sod-all about Kirk's parents, so they could have been born at any time.

That being said, if Shatner plays any Kirk ancestor, it should probably be his grandfather. Otherwise it wouldn't look right. And I actually think this would be the only decent cameo Shatner could have. As others have pointed out, having him play a very proud Grandpa Kirk, seeing Jimmy off on the Enterprise's mission...I can see that happening.

I agree with those that think Anson Mount would make a nice Captain Pike. He just has the eyes and jaw to nail it. He might be a touch too young, but if they are only going to use him for one film (likely) makeup could easily take care of that.

I mean the guy that played Pike in the Starbase scenes of The Menagerie, Sean Kenney, looked a helluva lot like Jeffery Hunter, (cast for that reason) but he was significantly younger than Hunter. Of course the Delta Fry makeup was quite a bit more drastic than simple age progression, and those similarities were eventually much harder to make out. But my point is, his youthful age shouldn't necessarily make him a non-consider (even though this is all just fun speculation anyway.)

Unless Tom Cruise is an actual Trek fan, I don't see him settling for a glorified cameo appearance. His total onscreen time as Pike would certainly be only a few minutes at most. Would he stoop to that level? People that famous...I'm not sure if he'd be willing to settle for a cameo.

Big stars with a sense of humor do (think Bruce Willis in Ocean's 12).

But then, I guess that rules out Cruise.

Meh, I say they go a totally different direction for Pike. My vote is for Drew Carey. He needs a gig.

Mark Hamill as Pike..what? Oh it's a joke people.

I keep thinking of who could mined from the previous cast (in terms of guest actors) to play Pike seeing as it's just cameo most like. And for the life of me I can't come up with anything.

Hunter is Pike, I can't separate the two.

Hunter was about 40 when he played Pike. But I'm thinking if Hunter is in this one it's a short cameo and he could be as many as 10 years younger.

Sean Connery did it for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He was in that for like 10 seconds and gave his salary to charity.

Ah, but would these people do this for Trek as well? It's not considered as cool or 'hip' to appear in Trek. Maybe Connery was just a big Robin Hood fan.

Cruise is OK, but, my personal choice would be Thomas Gibson of Criminal Minds, who really looks the part.

Assuming that's the same Thomas Gibson from Dharma and Greg, I could live with that.

wow I didnt know it was the same guy, saw S1 of D&G, but yeah it is him (IMDB)

also both he & John Cho were in "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas"

Thomas Gibson:

"Dharma and Greg?" I'm just gonna pretend that part of your post never happened. ;)

ETA: Never mind, wamdue just one-upped you. :p

Well, I don't watch CSI, SVU, L&O, et.al. (overdosed on cop procedural shows years ago), but I did watch Dharma and Greg early on (mostly for Jenna Elfman's rack). So that's where I remembered the name from. Haven't seen him in nearly a decade, but Pike SHOULD be about 10 years older than he was in The Cage at the time he turns The E over to Kirk, right? :)
