Spoilers Picard Prequel "Children of Mars"

Care to lay odds that this is going to be Picard's theme song?

It fits the theme of Picard's clutch of misfits (cf., two former SF officers, a former Borg drone, a teenage Romulan swordsman, etc.) being "heroes".

Streaming fees are relatively cheap (there was a reason Prince didn't want his music streamed while he was alive).

Not much of any choice left with all the Bowie tunes already taken, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Underground, Cat People, Golden Years etc. I Would however, prefer a less dirgey version of the tune if it comes to that.

I really don't understand how people who do not see these things can even follow Star Trek. Do you get confused in the Original films because you cannot tell Enterprise and Excelsior apart?

Honest answer: broad strokes and context. The Enterprise is the familiar-looking ship with the saucer and nacelles that our heroes are on, that looks like the ship from the original TV series, more or less. If we see it zapped by a photon torpedo and then the camera cuts to Kirk and crew falling out of their seats on a shaking bridge, I know what ship it is. Pretty much every movie and TV version of the Enterprise looks more or less the same, in broad strokes.

As for the Excelsior . . . at this late date, I'm not sure I could pick it out of a lineup, but in the context of the stories I guess it looked different enough from those movies' Enterprise that I could tell them apart--again, with a lot of help from the placement in the story.

If the camera cuts to Sulu at the helm, or that martinet from the third movie, or Uhura announces "It's the Excelsior, sir!," I can generally figure it out. :)

And this is, of course, different from a bunch of random ships zipping about the background of an apocalyptic battle scene. In which case, the overall effect is simply "Whoa, look at all those ships! Shit is going down."

I'm not going to be cataloguing what kind of ships, exactly. Especially when all hell is breaking loose onscreen. :)

Considering we've also seen Ten Forward, I think they learned their lesson about making unneeded changes to the universe.
Yeah - given what they SHOWED in "Children Of Mars" you're right...oh, wait...:vulcan::rommie:;)

If you want to believe that somehow it was a 'rushed shot' or that somehow (even though much of STP is controlled overseen by many of the same people who oversee production of STD) it's because "The STD production crew was involved and NOT the STP production crew..." <--- Again, like there's any real major difference between the two...

Be my guest. But I think you're setting yourself up for a major shock/disappointment when the STP series streams; but hey, time will tell.

Given that they're going for "Logan", dirgey would seem to fit the bill.

We won't know until the show premieres. Though it seems like a lot of effort to be replaced for the show. We're talking about both interior and exterior shots of the ship. Plus, the Starfleet uniforms and LCARS in the background kinda point to them using the already established design language.

There simply wasn't much plot or characterization to care about. The entire thing was a pretty bare bones experience outside the last minute.

True. The direction was impeccably done though, considering the script fit on a single page. Too much of Discovery direction seems to like the whole weird camera angles, fast pans, and strange lighting just to be "artsy" or something. Here everything is much more by-the-book, but it succeeded in being emotionally compelling nonetheless.

The short didn't really make me think about anything - it just made me feel. Which is what it was intended to do - break things down to a simple character story that all of us can relate to (at least to some extent) and then drop the 9/11 analogue on us - letting us feel empathy for both of the girls, and not just experience it as spectacle.

They're identical.
No - They aren't:

There are a number of differences, but the main one is the warp drive units.

And that just proves a point others are saying: That unless you're REALLY into a particular aspect, you really don't notice the differences. And to be honest I'd say 90% plus of any of the people watching the new shows fall into the group that really doesn't notice - we're all a real niche of Star Trek fans as a whole that care about these aspects. - myself included

While the preview of the short didn't turn out to by symbolic, the short itself seems like it may have been...possibly of the Federation and Romulans coming together. And the title has a symbolic layer...the girls were effectively at war with each other; Mars was the god of...you know.

I think there is some miscommunication here. I thought you were talking about the D-7 in the Discovery season two advertisements vs. the D-7 in the actual show.

Oh I misread your post, I thought you meant it had changed between the Hologram at the start of Season 2 and it's appearance near the end.

For a brief moment (till I went back and looked a second time), I thought this was
Neil deGrasse Tyson ...

With just a fast look, it could be his Mirror Universe Doppelganger.

(I'm positive he would have been touting all about it, all over the internet by now if it had been him)

Coming together to fight the Borg? :shifty:

(With the UFP turning a blind eye to the Romulans' dirty work?)

I enjoyed the short. What I didn't enjoy was the (what seemed to be a) ten minute commercial break that CTV Sci-Fi Channel* felt they needed to stick in the middle of an eight minute short. It really disrupted the flow of the episode.

* I still haven't got used to this kludgey new name. Can we just agree to call it "Sci-Fi" from here on out? It's not like SyFy in the US is technically using it anymore....
