But it's still a library of hundreds of 23rd century ships.

Eaglemoss and many ship designers would have them. All it would take is an email. Just ask Drexler for instance.

There's a whole lotta overhead in what you're suggesting, including legal and financial/royalties issues, that are certainly too much of a pain to deal with for a 5 second shot.

What do you mean? CBS owns them all. Hell, with Paramount back, they could use the movie ships.

Now, when they reuse CGI models, TrekBBS has a cow ("Why are they reusing old ship models? Can't they make new ones?" )

There's no pleasing some people.

It isn't as simple as that. There's rights and all of that to be hashed out by the lawyers and all that.

The models were made to be used on the old productions, not the new productions.
Then there's converting all the models and textures to current industry standard and whatever rendering program they're using. It isn't as a easy and dragging and dropping into the scene.

I would love to see some new ships, but that makes no sense for a short. Reusing some First Contact era ships makes more sense there.

It makes sense if you consider the fact they probably didn't have the same budget as the full show. Are you even reading these posts?

They had the budget to do that elaborate Shipyard short. Not to mention that god awful Engineering set which was used for seconds in the previous one. I'm pretty sure they would have had the money to use appropriate ships if they wanted to. They obviously chose not to and that's what annoys me.
I do think however the attack shots were reused from Picard which could explain the correct Mars shot. That gives me some hope at least that those people take their job more seriously than the Discovery people.

    Pretty much.
It still costs time and money, depending on the file format. How much time are they to spend updating these models that, as illustrated by this very thread, will be picked apart like an autopsy? The models, again, may not work with the same format, since different art houses may use different programs or formats to protect their work, the poly count may be too low, and a host of other VFX issues that I might not be thinking of since I'm not in that industry.

Sorry, this isn't Microsoft Word were you "Ctrl+C" and "Ctrl+V."

Discovery does take their stuff seriously. Stop putting hard working people down like that. It's rude.

It's also probably the same VFX teams.

If they used an Akira, someone would probably start with "what's the NX-01 doing there?" Hell, there are people who to this day claim they spotted the NX-01 in a Dominion War battle. They can't use the Norway since the CG mesh of it was lost after First Contact, which is why we've only ever seen the ship in that movie.

I'm sure they have rebuilt the Norway for the Eaglemoss model. Sabre would have been fine as well. That's probably the 24th century equivalent to the Magee.

Yes, a magazine has all the info one needs about CGIing ships for a TV show,

It would give information about how they built the model. I assume they rebuilt a CGI one. A lot of work is put into these models and most are movie quality in detail.
