What’s the species of the girl in the short trek? I love this one - the format was simply brilliant. And sets up even more intrigue for Picard. Synths, attack on Mars, Liberated Borg, Romulan evacuation, local people left behind. Loving it!

now, I hope we’ll have in the future a series set 2-3 centuries after this that explores different parts of the galaxy

It would have been fun to make her a Ktarian or part-Ktarian like Naomi Wildman but as far as I know we've never before seen her species unless this makeup was seen on, say, the Promenade in DS9 but never elaborated upon.

Honestly, this seemed to be less about bullying than a short-lived squabble between two kids, one of whom was clearly troubled by her father's repeated absence. The conflict lasted exactly one day and, in fact, the school administrators were already intervening. Had it persisted, no doubt steps would be taken to address the kids' issues, parents contacted, etc.

Seems plausible enough for me. Do we really think that kids are always going to get along, never lose their tempers, get their feelings hurt, or hold grudges in the future? "Progressive" doesn't mean that everyone is perfectly well-adjusted and well-behaved all the time, just that society is developing better ways of coping with the inevitable messiness and imperfections of sentient beings. You're still going to have kids acting out and having personality conflicts. What matter is how you cope with them.

Hmm... I'm a dreamer. I was badly bullied at that age and I'd like to imagine no one else will have to suffer through that...

Understood. I wasn't a big fan of junior high either, but stories about people, even future people, means addressing the good and bad sides of human nature. And certainly I'm not aware of STAR TREK ever endorsing bullying; Lord knows we're not supposed to forgive or condone those Vulcan kids picking on Spock back in the day. And Finnegan comes off as a first-class jerk . . . .

As for this ep, my impression was that the human girl didn't deliberately bump into the alien girl that first time; she was just too focused on her own troubles to pay attention to where she was going. Alas, the alien girl didn't see it that way and matters escalated . . . until the larger tragedy put their petty squabble into perspective.
