If you're a business executive manufacturing luxury goods you can travel the world working with different countries, not to mention helping develop local economies. I could easily imagine Picard trying to expand his company into rural Indonesia/Vietnam, exploring the country side meeting with village elders trying to make agreements with local governments to get a factor built etc.
Maybe he would join it, but I sincerely doubt he'd stay in it past the age of 30. So many things you cannot do while in the military.
He was a science officer, his role was closer to being a teaching assistant at a university.
That's a real reach -- he seemed to be more like a secretary, 'carrying reports to your superiors' as he put it.
Picard would not do well in academics, because he speaks his mind and defends his principles, as seen in "The Drumhead". He would remind them that: "With the first link, the chain is forged. I imagine he would have become a historian or an archeologist if he was alive today, in the Star Trek universe he joined starfleet out of a desire to explore but his interest didn't really lie in physics, so I don't think he would have become an astrophysicist or anyone exploring space from earth. His other interests probably would have won out.
