Picard if he were alive today.

Because modern day militaries are a completely different beast.

Far less prestigious, less science and exploration etc, deeper moral ambiguity etc.

Nevertheless the military is the way to get into a lot of exploration, through eg spaceflight or getting posted to Antarctica. Personally I think people think Picard wouldn't join the military because they wouldn't join the military (neither would I!), and they want him to be just like them. We saw in Tapestry how he would have stuck with the military life even without the exciting exploration, etc.

If you're a business executive manufacturing luxury goods you can travel the world working with different countries, not to mention helping develop local economies. I could easily imagine Picard trying to expand his company into rural Indonesia/Vietnam, exploring the country side meeting with village elders trying to make agreements with local governments to get a factor built etc.

Maybe he would join it, but I sincerely doubt he'd stay in it past the age of 30. So many things you cannot do while in the military.

He was a science officer, his role was closer to being a teaching assistant at a university.

Picard would not do well in academics, because he speaks his mind and defends his principles, as seen in "The Drumhead". He would remind them that: "With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." And the cancel culture crew would quickly steamroll him.

Nonsense. My husband is an academic and speaks his mind, and has done very well out of it.

I’m an academic who speaks my mind and defends my principles.

What the fuck are you talking about?

The real question is not "do I speak my mind or not?" It's "what do I do when other people speak theirs, and I don't like what they say?"

If you respond by quietly discussing the matter with them, or rationally debating them... or destroying their argument with science, or statistics, or logic, or any other intellectual force you can bring to bear... Picard would have no issue with you whatsoever, even if it was his own position that was debunked.

If you respond by forcibly silencing them, or administering punishment to them, or taking any measures that employ force rather than persuasion... Picard would quote Satie's speech to you.

Enough.

I’ve told you before to stop these drive-by political insertions into unrelated topics.

By all means, please join us in TNZ, where we can discuss censorship in academia all you like.

I imagine he would have become a historian or an archeologist if he was alive today, in the Star Trek universe he joined starfleet out of a desire to explore but his interest didn't really lie in physics, so I don't think he would have become an astrophysicist or anyone exploring space from earth. His other interests probably would have won out.

No can do. Awesome Possum is effectively the admin there, and she banned me some time ago.

Even if that was true, which it’s not, “what happens in TNZ stays in TNZ”. That’s a rule. You should know that because you’ve been warned about that before.

You seem bound and determined to argue with me and to derail this thread with off topic posts.

You’ve received a warning. Next time I say “enough”…it’s enough.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

He'd be an archeologist proving that the Richat Structure in eastern Mauritania is indeed the lost city of Atlantis. :techman:

which raises the most important question. Would Picard be a fan of TNG and the adventures of captain Holloway and the crew of the Enterpsiee D?
No, he would not. Probably more naval adventures or possibly a Western given his love of horse back riding.
