Picard film in development

It's starting to get as bad as TOS novels in the 90s which kept manufacturing one final mission for the characters set after TUC but before the opening scenes in Generations. Then Shatner's novels had Kirk, Spock. McCoy and eventually Scotty having adventures in the 24th century.
The 90s novels that fit into that gap generally hang together.

First, there's a group of novels that's about a short reprieve for the Enterprise crew from retirement -- beginning with Best Destiny, Sarek is in the middle, and it ends with Shadows on the Sun when the ship returns home. (If Ann Crispin's unpublished and unfinished trilogy with Zar, Spock's son with Zarabeth, had been published, it would have gone in here.)

There's there's a group of novels with them retired and reuniting in various capacities for other missions. Mind Meld is one, the Denny Martin Flinn novel (I'm blanking on the name), and The Last Round-Up. Personally, I put The Ashes of Eden here, too; it's the Shatner novel that fits easiest with non-Shatner novels.

I know that the Generations prologue is supposed to take place in 2293, a few months after Star Trek VI, but I prefer the date of 2295 given in Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens' Federation, so there's time for all of this stuff to happen.

Tell us how you really feel!

I just don’t feel itchy to explore these pockets of what already exists. Essentially Khan on CAV is the boring bit that came between Space Seed and TWOK.

I suppose everything could start out fine until the whole planet shifts orbit. Then comes the tirade against the sand.

Honestly speaking, they lost me as an audience member the moment they said ‘audio drama’. That is a medium that doesn’t work for me.

Anyway.

This Picard Movie.

It’s not going to fucking happen is it?

Already filming. Here's a still

Which is why it is my head canon. ;)

Shows just how little penetration post-TNG Trek has among the general population.

Well, I'm not one of those fans. If they do a "Picard" movie, I won't be seeing. I'm certain many of you will.

Ironically, I narrate audiobooks but dislike listening to audiobooks.

No. And don’t expect anything to happen with Shatner and Mulgrew either. But I don’t feel bad about any of that.

So, the franchise would rather do another Trek film featuring an almost 85 year-old Stewart as Picard, rather than even consider doing a movie featuring any of the characters from shows other than TNG.

TOS has had their day.

With DS9, Paramount are unable get Avery Brooks to come back.

VOY’s ending was predetermined. Plus, it has its share of spinoffs (PRO, PIC, the upcoming SFA, and the desired show Legacy). And frankly, the moment for a theatrical movie may have passed two decades ago; NEM arguably should have been their movie instead of another TNG outing.

ENT, as we are repeated told, had little penetration into the public consciousness. With the most memeable aspects of the show being around it’s theme song, the decon chamber, and its maligned final episode. And like VOY, had a predetermined end. So, it’s unlikely, despite the reassessment of the series over the past few years that it was not so bad.

Paramount literally refused to made the finale of DIS a two-hour movie, a huge turnaround from the critical acclaim the show was getting for its first season. Its not getting touted in the media like TOS, TNG and the Kelvinfilms were anymore. So, a DIS movie is not on their radar at all.

Paramount got rid of the show that was cheapest to make in LD. Even though it would have been in syndication with a few more season added. Which would have given this era of Trek more visibility due to how accessible the show would be for viewers.

PRO was a tax writeoff. And any movement on a movie is likely Netflix’s responsibility now.

SNW is not done yet, and the expected endpoint of that series for most viewers is either Pike turning over the Enterprise to Kirk, or Pike’s accident. So, like VOY and ENT, it has a predetermined end.

SFA has not aired yet. And with its setting, probably would work better as a crossover movie with DIS. Meaning it’s several years away from happening.

Section 31 was not put into theatres despite Michelle Yeoh – who had won an Oscar, btw - being the lead. And with Netflix also putting A-listers in their Netflix-exclusive films, theatrical releases don’t matter like they used to. And considering the negative reviews S31 gets, it might not have been a bad thing it was theatrically released.

And with the Kelvinverse, its in development hell, and has been for 9 years now. And a few feel that BEY was a decent enough sendoff to not bother continuing.

Hm, I wonder why they are turning to an 85-year-old Patrick Stewart again?

Stewart isn’t going to be doing anything, just like Shatner and Mulgrew aren’t. I would say that any prospect for further TV movies are dead at this point. And we already know the status of Trek on the big screen (i.e. it’s become a huge joke.) I think the only thing we can look forward to for at least the next few years is SNW season 3 and SFA season 1. And that’s pretty much it. Time will tell if a total of 20 episodes over a two-year span of time will keep viewers’ interests enough to keep subscribing to Paramount+.

If Sec31 was a backdoor attempt to see if Paramount+ Trek would translate to movie format, they killed it, stomped on the corpse and threw it in a furnace. It's over, yeah. And a Picard movie has no appeal except a limited audience, and they've proven in three seasons of the show, they never quite got it right.

They are currently filming SNW season 4. A second season of SFA was also confirmed, but I'm sure you'd say it could just as easily be cancelled until something actually happens with it.
