Picard film in development

I love the Klingon designs for the diversity of ships presented.

I can appreciate THAT aspect of it... I just think they failed on the execution.

Given the lore behind them, i'm totally fine that the DSC Klingon ships really share almost nothing in common with other Klingon ships we have seen. The Empire has basically fallen and the Houses are all just doing their own thing... this is what happens when you have leave the Klingon houses to their own devices for a century or so. Totally fine with all of that. The D7 popping up with the reunification of the Empire reinforces my theory that the "traditional" Klingon type ships are reserved for the Empire, and Klingon honor prevents individual Houses from producing them.

But by and large, in my opinion, the DSC Klingon ships are just... ugly.

I kind of sort of like the Qoj. Probably my favorite of them, although that's not saying much.

She wouldn't look so bad to me if she didn't have that gargantuan neck.

The design of the Excelsior II isn't as problematic to me as their 4XXXX registries, which seem to imply that these ships are actually either refits of older Excelsiors (doubtful), or were produced alongside those older Excelsiors in the 2330's-'50's or so (even more doubtful), rather than being new designs as of 2401.

The Engle class.

To me, the Engle class is really the only Eaves design that harkens back to the NX-01. The rest...

All perfectly believable as ships that came between the NX-01 and the Constitution class.

I don't quite agree. Other than the deflector dishes (which on some ships are barely an afterthought), most of these designs look far too advanced for the time period. To me they look like ships that would have been constructed post-TUC, not pre-TOS. Heck, two of the designs and a DSC shuttle showed up in the Picard Short Trek and nobody batted an eye.

Oh yeah, definitely. I have a soft spot for all the Discovery ships. Including the Nimitz, Cardenas, and Hoover.

Case in point: The Cardenas class. Setting aside for the moment that this ship would have looked right at home with the other ships fighting the Borg in Star Trek: First Contact in the 2370's, there's another four-nacelled ship class contemporaneous to it, the Radiant class (designed by Bill Krause) that looks far more TOS-centric than this ship does, and yet we're supposed to believe that these two ships that look nothing alike tech-wise were built around the same time.

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Radiant_class

And I think that my feelings are warranted, as SNW seems to have gone the route of designing their ships to have more of a TOS feel to them, and are refraining from using the DSC season 1 ships.

Discovery has confirmed that registry numbers are not in sequence. Discovery is explicitly a brand new ship, as NCC-1031.

COULD it simply be that they have introduced the letter suffix's yet and Discovery is named after an older ship with the same registry? Sure, but we have no indication of that.

Yeah, the Cardenas looks the most out of place.

I think the others could mostly be believable "somewhere between NX and Constitution Refit" ships.

I buy the Nimitz as something of a beefed up contemporary to the Miranda. I can buy the Engle. The Sheppard is pretty much a saucer with some nacelles slapped on the back.

Walker I can buy as an OLD ship, in my mind early Federation, 2200ish.

Yes, they are.

That's the appeal.

Whatever floats your boat.

"Ugly" can be a good thing in certain contexts. I don't think this is one of them.

The pre-TOS era is quite different from the pre-TNG/TNG era. Ship registries were far more chronological than not in the latter.

It's more a matter of purpose. Why should a Klingon ship appeal to my human eye?

I might not agree with all the aesthetic choices but I think the purpose is well served in the story. And I think that's the larger thing for me. Ships don't just have to "look pretty" to my eye. Ships are vehicles to the story, they convey a different level of intent behind it. If I just go "Oh, what a pretty looking ship" then I feel that misses the larger narrative.

I'm picking up what you're putting down, but I think the designs are so bad they go beyond "those aren't pleasing to the human eye" into "i'm pulled out of the show entirely by how dumb these designs are"

If it happens, I'll treat the Picard Movie like a two-hour version of what PIC Season 4 would've been. And no two seasons of Picard are alike. There are some loose ends that PIC Season 3 didn't address: Picard/Laris chief among them. And there 100% should be a scene between Data and Soji. Data should meet his "daughter", and it would be a real mistake not to have that.

I get the impression that as far as the producers are concerned, Laris and Soji’s story is over.

I agree, I don't think there's gonna be anything Laris again. Remember, Sir Patrick wants that absolutely unnecessary ending with a wife who calls Jean-Luc over for dinner and we only hear her voice (and in reality she's voiced by his real life wife). Wonderful way of alienating pretty much EVERY single shipper out there, sir.

I remember that. I hope someone has the stones to convince him he should commit to Picard's wife having an identity whether it's Laris, Beverly, or Whoever Else.

I don't think they need to have Laris, but at least some mention or acknowledgement that it's over would be nice.

I'd love the curveball of "he ditched Laris, he ditched Beverly, he ditched THEM ALL and got himself a husband instead" (it wouldn't even be completely out of the blue, when he talks to Guinan about why he never settled down it is not even ONCE being mentioned that this means he'd settle down with a woman, it's always referred to as "someone", gender does not appear to be a factor here).

I couldn't even blame Laris tho tbh. If he starts to hang out with Crusher again under the whole thing of "hey we have a son together now" I'd get annoyed at some point, too, especially since there's still a LOT of tension and unresolved feelings because she ghosted him, it's not that they separated with a nice mutual agreement or whatever. And Laris is a Romulan AND a former Tal'Shiar operative. Being suspicious is probably in her nature. And she's the type who voices discontent, and voices it directly. (Good on her!) I can see all this being the source of a lot of friction. Not to mention the fact that he probably kept the vineyard around now after all because who knows, Jack might want it at some point, and yeah, the whole plan about him moving to that planet with Laris might have just fallen apart right there. It would make sense for it to be over.

So I'm guessing the thinking here is that it's over, he tried it AGAIN with Crusher, it failed because naturally it would, and then he found someone ELSE who he then married. Dude really gets around in his old age. (Typical Sir Patrick thinking right there.) Not that I can blame anyone for wanting Jean-Luc (look who's talking), but eh... it's not exactly very realistic. And they would have HAD this ending on PIC if Paramount - according to Sir Patrick - hadn't said it was too expensive to shoot (I think they only said that as an excuse tbh).

If Picard got a husband, I hope whoever it would be is played by Ian McKellen!

In the Picard movie, Q brings Jean-Luc's corpse back to life. The robo Jean-Luc hooks up with Laris, the original Picard hooks up with Beverly.

And no two seasons of Picard are alike.

Yes, there are differences between the seasons. Though there are ties to the Borg in all of them.

So a PIC movie will likely have some sort of ties to the Borg. Be it someone else’s Borg trauma, Borg tech, Xbs, the Jurati Borg, 29th century Borg, or the psyche of Picard after finally defeating the Borg for good. Maybe even something ancient related to the Borg, which allows Picard to use his archeology skills.

And no, I am not generalizing. I’m observing a general aspect of the PIC series. As Picard’s relationship with the Romulans were generally phased out over the series – Zhaban gone, Laris and Elnor becoming afterthoughts, Romulan Free State not followed up on. Even Tallinn being a descendent of Laris.

There are some loose ends that PIC Season 3 didn't address: Picard/Laris chief among them.

A scene with Beverly and Laris. Seeing as Laris is on Chaltok IV to set up diplomatic security. And Beverly has invented a method to screen for Changelings.

And there 100% should be a scene between Data and Soji. Data should meet his "daughter", and it would be a real mistake not to have that.

I feel that scene will be in no matter what.

If you do not know the identity of Picard’s wife, is that such a big deal?

he tried it AGAIN with Crusher, it failed because naturally it would,

Not necessarily. It’s not clear how far in the future that scene with Picard and the unseen wife is. It could be in the early 2440s for all we know.

Meaning Picard and Beverly remain married for a few decades.

Picard can be in a polyamorous marriage to both Beverly and Laris. I still can see him showing up at the place he and Laris were to live at, later after the events on season 3 of Picard and being like "Honey I am home. I want you to meet the other love of my live in Beverly. Let's all get married!"

If Picard got a husband, I hope whoever it would be is played by Ian McKellen!

He could also just be that mysterious voice Sir Patrick wants to have that calls Jean-Luc over for dinner. Everybody would recognize it. They wouldn't even have to show him. I'd love a twist like this. I hope Sir Ian suggests this to him (wouldn't put it past him). :D

If you do not know the identity of Picard’s wife, is that such a big deal?
I think it is. How do I put this? If Picard's with a woman, she should be an actual character, not an idea or a reward or a trophy. Women exist for reasons besides, "I'm the wife!" It wouldn't be a very 25th Century attitude to have depicted in Picard, it's not even a 21st Century attitude in Real Life. It's a mid-20th Century 1950s idea. "And Picard gets married!" "I'm Misses Picard!"
