Picard film in development

It was also the early-00s, when Trek in general was on the decline. “Trek fatigue” and all that.

The conditions are different now.

Are they?

CBSAA/Paramount+'s original idea was to have five Trek series running back-to-back, so that in any given year there would always be a show on screen without any hiatuses. Look what happened with that idea: The flagship show was prematurely cancelled, the Section 31 show was changed to a TV movie, the Picard show only lasted three seasons, Prodigy was cancelled and completely removed for tax write-off reasons, and the future of SNW and LDS is unknown after their third and fifth seasons, respectively. It might not be the same type of franchise fatigue Berman-era Trek suffered from, but the end result is the same: less Trek. Not to mention the constant disappointments from Paramount for the last eight years about a new theatrical film that still shows absolutely no sign of happening. And now with the rumors of Zaslav getting control, there's a giant wild card now sitting atop any future Trek TV productions.

I’m not sure if it will be in theatres, and I’m not sure if it matters if its not, outside of whether it qualifies for Emmy nominations or Oscars nominations.

Well, if Paramount+ wants to spend their money making yet another vanity project for Stewart, that's their business. But if they haven't even been able to get a theatrical film off the ground in 8 years, what makes Stewart so sure it will happen with him? Unless they're just humoring him with a 'script' for some made-for-TV thing like S31 that will also most likely not get made under Zaslav.

Has anyone floated the idea that the script Patrick heard about having Picard in it might actually be the Section 31 movie? That would be an unexpected twist.

Disco mixed with TNG?

Witnessing TNG fans' heads explode in 3, 2, 1 ...

In all seriousness, Sir Patrick has said that the script was "due next week" (week of January 7th, 2024).

I'm assuming he's talking about two separate scripts. I would think that the S31 script would be further along the development process by now.

Picard was always intended to last only three seasons (Sir Patrick can only do so much at his age).

Yeah, anyone remember the John Logan Janeway/Seven project?

Nemesis bombing pretty much put the kibosh on that idea.

I think that intent happened during production, and not the original idea when the series was first conceived.
I definitely remember them saying it was planned for three series with a possibility for more. With the luke warm viewer reaction to the first two seasons and COVID, I think any long term plan like that went out of the window. But Picard S3 seemed (on the face of it) like a big success across the board.

Paramount only budgeted for five seasons of DIS from the beginning. And they might have been open to more if the show was more popular and less expensive to make. Unfortunately, outside of being a launching pad for other Trek shows, DIS was bungled and it never became the popular show it should have been.

the Section 31 show was changed to a TV movie,

Compared to where it was before, having the same starts and stops as Star Trek 4, and almost never got off the ground.

the Picard show only lasted three seasons,

PIC was always intended to be a deconstruction of Picard, not be a 24th century/25th century show. And there weren’t going to many seasons anyways. SirPat signing on for as many seasons as he did was largely luck.

If you wanted S4 and S5, then maybe PIC should have launched the P+ streaming era, instead of DIS.

Prodigy was cancelled and completely removed for tax write-off reasons,

They probably presumed that PRO had the weakest fanbase, and was thus the most expendable for the tax write-off. And were proven wrong.

and the future of SNW and LDS is unknown after their third and fifth seasons, respectively.

With the Paramount-WBD merger talk, and it being known what projects have been cancelled for tax write-off reasons under WBD, and even what franchises are getting soft reboots under WBD, uncertainty is understandable.

Star Trek managed to get on with only one show on the air for years, the mid-90s and the early-20s being the exception. I think Star Trek will be fine at its current reduced output for now.

A combination of star power + how much Paramount willing to spend on Stewart vs spending the whole Kelvinverse cast, not counting money to spend on Cumberbatch and Hemsworth to reprise their role in a Kelvinverse film.

And conceptually, a Picard-centred movie is a lot less controversial than the S31 movie, meaning people will be guaranteed to show up.

Unless they're just humoring him with a 'script' for some made-for-TV thing like S31 that will also most likely not get made under Zaslav.

The merger, if it happens will take years to finalize. The film will likely be out before then. SirPat isn’t getting any younger, so the film will likely be fast tracked.

Yeah, they obviously took it off of P+ because it was a package deal -- no one was going to buy the second season of a show where you need to watch the first season on a competing streaming service.

I'm not sure that's true, because they they didn't stop production on Season 2 after it was cancelled, the show was still being actively produced while it was being shopped around.

I thought they were producing season 2 before Paramount+ decided to cancel it?

  • It could be none of that and just feature Picard in it. I mean it's possible the cadets in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy watch something with Picard in it.

They're going cameo-crazy over at the MCU (Charles Xavier has already appeared in Multiverse of Madness).

I doubt he'd be making this big a deal over a cameo (he's been there and done that).

That's nothing out of the ordinary. For example, the DS9 actors were contracted for five seasons, with the option to renegotiate their contracts every year after that. If after five years the actors didn't want to do the show anymore, the producers decided it was too expensive to produce, etc., the show would end at season 5. But obviously the show was still popular enough and the actors were wanting to continue, so it went two more years.

Compared to where it was before, having the same starts and stops as Star Trek 4, and almost never got off the ground.

There are certain factors that make the two scenarios different, not least of which is that the Section 31 film will have a much smaller TV budget than a theatrical feature film. And that Star Trek 4 was never envisioned as a television series first.

PIC was always intended to be a deconstruction of Picard, not be a 24th century/25th century show. And there weren’t going to many seasons anyways. SirPat signing on for as many seasons as he did was largely luck.

I'm pretty sure that if Stewart died after season 1, they would have retooled the show to take place without him, since they wouldn't have wanted to waste all those sets, props, costumes, etc. just to use for one season. And who knows how long the show would have lasted without Patrick's age being a factor?

If you wanted S4 and S5, then maybe PIC should have launched the P+ streaming era, instead of DIS.

I would have been fine with that. PIC would have been a different show than what we got (and there would be no ten-years-before-TOS prequel series) but I would have been much happier with that outcome.

Star Trek managed to get on with only one show on the air for years, the mid-90s and the early-20s being the exception. I think Star Trek will be fine at its current reduced output for now.

I also would be fine with P+ focusing on just one show rather than trying to juggle five at a time, with various amounts of continuity issues between them. I just wish they would make a show in a new continuity rather than using TOS and TNG as crutches.

A combination of star power + how much Paramount willing to spend on Stewart vs spending the whole Kelvinverse cast, not counting money to spend on Cumberbatch and Hemsworth to reprise their role in a Kelvinverse film.

The Kelvinverse cast isn't coming back. And nobody producing a theatrical feature film is going to cast Stewart as Picard just so he can have another vanity project.

And conceptually, a Picard-centred movie is a lot less controversial than the S31 movie, meaning people will be guaranteed to show up.

'Controversy' has nothing to do with it. You get butts in theater seats by advertising the hell out of your movie, no matter what the subject matter is. Something that Paramount completely sucks at doing.

You can't pretend 55 years of history doesn't exist.
You don't have to pretend because it's all made up and doesn't actually exist. The writers are free to ignore all or parts of it, it shouldn't matter, it's entertainment not actual history.

That doesn't mean continuity is always bad but a decades old franchise should not be afraid to simply throw things out or start over completely.
