Photobucket just broke a million forums on the internet - including this one!

Does anyone know of a site that would allow hosting of forum icons, banners, etc.?

It came up as a possible solution in one of the many forum threads I read about this issue, but I can't say anymore where that was.
I am sorry if I spread wrong information.
You are bad and you should feel bad!
No, I'm kidding. DeviantArt makes it nigh on impossible to know what you are and aren't allowed to do when it comes to image hosting.

PostImage will let you host any image (.png, .bmp, .jpg, .tiff, .gif, .svg, .pct, .aiff, and so on) with unlimited bandwidth, and won't remove them due to inactivity. I use them to host forum images (avatars, banners, icons) on a number of sites.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I couldn't even figure out how to upload a picture. I mean yes, there was an upload button, and I could check in which groups I wanted it to end up, but I thought I could make several galleries in my account, sorted by theme. I'm German, you know ;)
So for the moment I am signed up there but with a totally empty account. At least nobody can use my name.

^^ Postimage seems like the way to go if Photobucket doesn't wise up.

It's great, I am there too now and I recommend it! I love especially how you upload the full picture and then get to choose in which size it should be displayed, but if someone clicks it they still get to see the full picture. With Photobucket, I used to scale them down before uploading.
Getting all the links at once in a box is a Plus also.

Nah, don't worry about it. It's all deviantArt's fault. :D
I also read that people use Facebook photos for hotlinking. I'd rather not test that!

I just uploaded a ton of images to Photobucket to get it close to the max. I'm just going to let them sit there and take up space. I'm using PostImage now as well.

It's not going to wise up. They're still sending me emails, nagging me to upgrade my account, like I really need hundreds of GB of space. I tried telling them before that they should only send these emails to people who don't have paid accounts, or people who haven't already written to tell them to stop harassing people who aren't interested. They answered, "We're sorry, why don't you just unsubscribe?".

Well, it's a good thing I didn't, or else I wouldn't have known about some of what's going on now.

That site has been getting worse and worse for years, every time it's changed ownership (at least I hope it's just progressively greedy owners, because otherwise, I'd seriously question the mental health of the ones who owned it when I first signed up).

Since my Plus 20 account squeaked past this image-blocking obnoxiousness by one day (my account expired June 2 and I promptly renewed as soon as they emailed me), I've got until June 1 next year to weed out what I really don't want, and move everything else. And then oh joy... fixing all the broken links in my forums and everywhere I've posted here and on the other sites where I've posted pictures. Luckily for TrekBBS, that's mostly in a few avatar contest threads (yeah I know they're old, but some people do look through the old contests just to see the pictures, and since I won a few times, I'd like to preserve those).

Well, I got 3 increasingly urgent emails...which went right to my spam folder.

And I see that all my links across the internet are down, and they want me to pay to upgrade so they all come back. I had ~2500 images and 400mb of use.

That's pretty sad. I'm sure that's what people are doing and before long they'll no longer have customers and fade into irrelevance. Kind of like how Myspace was once popular before they made bad decisions that made people want to leave in favour of the newcomer, Facebook. And it's not like they've got any leverage to really make people want to stay either. Nothing unique, and when attitude comes into play, doesn't feel like anybody's welcome anymore.

I used to have a Myspace account. It was fun while it lasted, and made my day one year when a total stranger took the time to wish me happy birthday.

But later on it turned into a godawful mess of ads, malware, eye-hurting graphics, and my account was basically unusable. So I salvaged what I could and abandoned the rest.

Photobucket has the shop thing where they push posters, mugs, etc. and there's a feature that lets you play around and edit pictures. I've never bothered with either of those - if I want to buy art, I go to deviantArt, Etsy, eBay, or Artfire (I need another fridge just for the magnets I bought from a Latvian artist who does the most adorable cat paintings). And there's a decent free image editor if I want to experiment with my pictures.

Photobucket seems to have a maximum size, too. I usually scale my pictures before uploading, but one time when I tried to put up a full-rez picture for someone, it rescaled it to 1000 across.

That sounds awkward. But then, everything about Facebook is awkward.

I don't think they'll wise up, either, but, strangely, I haven't gotten any emails from them yet. Nevertheless, I should probably register at Postimage before uploading anything else. The photo thread on my forum is going to look pretty sad once they catch up with me.

The problem we're going to run into there is that most forums have time limits on editing posts. That's not a problem on my own forum, but on places like TrekBBS or EI a Mod or Admin would have to do it. Not worth the trouble, even if they wanted to.

We can edit our posts here; I don't think that's something just limited to the premium members.

I'm in luck at CivFanatics, since one of the moderators there is involved in a thread posted on behalf of the game modders - they post a lot of images of historical buildings, monuments, military units, and so on. They post hundreds of images on the site, and some of them will be scrambling because of this. The Off-Topic forum there has a couple of serial picture threads, of personal photos and photos of places that are just plain nifty. I'd hate for those threads to turn into nothing but blocked-image notices.

As for my own forums, I know there's at least one person on my Doctor Who forum whose images will all be blocked now. She'll have a chance to fix that, however, since I don't impose time limits on editing posts. I don't see the point in doing that.

There used to be a time limit to editing posts at TrekBBS, but as best I can tell, it there is no limit anymore.

One of the reasons for it, as I recall, was that some people were going back and editing their posts to include links and images and wording that would have gotten then warned or even banned, but with old threads almost nobody sees, they can get away with it.

Yeah, there used to be a 24-hour limit, but apparently that's not the case. Good thing, since it looks like Photobucket just blocked me and my latest avatar contest entry is gone.

Well, Postimage seems easy enough. Very bare bones, though. I don't even see a profile or a way to change my password. I don't really have time to look at it right now, but at least I got my avatar entry back in.

PB has failed me. FAILED ME!!

I shall now try reposting my adorable granddaughter using Postimage.

There she is.

Once you've created an account, click on your account name which will bring you to a list of account options that you can change, including the password Those that don't create an account will still be able to upload, but they won't have their own gallery.

It's really quick and fast. But part of me wonders how long that's going to last when they find themselves with a lot of Photobucket refugees and a large increase in traffic.

I don't mind paying for hosting if the amount is reasonable. What Photobucket wants for a month now is what I just paid in June for a whole year.

Right now one of my forums is scrambling to figure out where our banner is hosted. It's not on my account, but it's not anywhere I recognize.

Time to hit the support forums and do some remedial study on IPB code.
