Phobias...(pain in the ass)

Mr Silver

Commodore
Newbie
I like many people are "Emetophobic", to those of you who aren't familiar with the term, simply put it means I have a fear of Vomiting...

I can't really explain it, I know that no one likes being sick, but still with me if I even remotely feel a bit queasy my heart sinks kinda like when someone tells you some really shocking news

Anyway I go to great lengths to avoid being sick, but even still theres the fact that one bug exists and is determined to keep me on edge throughout the months of September to May, i'm of course talking about "Norovirus" (aka Stomach Flu, Sickness Bug, Winter Vomiting Bug, Norwalk-Like Virus)

If I find out a friend or someone in my vicinity has been sick or has been around someone who was sick, I immediately avoid them, I will stay away from them for up to two weeks and as soon as I get home i'll shower like theres no tommorow!

It really is irrational, i'm quite a logically minded person and I know theres really an unlikely chance of me catching it, unless of course i'm having them vomit over me or breathe on me, but still I can't convince myself otherwise...

Anyway, today I moved into a new Flat and one of the workmen asked to use my bathroom, he was in there for quite a while taking a dump, he later informed me that he had a dodgy stomach and it was nothing for me to worry about (he assumed I might have children) because it wasn't a catching condition...Still I feel uneasy and i'm likely going to flood the place with Dettol later on...

Anyone else suffer from this or other Phobias that annoy you on a regular basis?

Well, that's a tough one to treat with the confrontation therapy for sure. ;)

But yeah, phobias are a pain in the ass before you deal with it. Spiders and height were my two problems. Both were unbelievably painful to get rid of. Now I have a terrarium and go climbing regularly.

Mayonnaise. I fear it. And it's harder to avoid than you would think.

Sorry, I don't think I have any phobias really. I hate insects, I get freaked out on rollercoasters, the thought of public speaking makes me queasy, etc. But I've never considered any of them a phobia where it's paralyzing. I have had my own experience with panic disorder but it wasn't about something in particular (though hearing a phone ring would often set me off).

I have arachnophobia, though it is more concentrated on tarantulas. Even when I simply know that they are near by, I freeze up and get a panic attack. When I am at Pet Stores that sell them, you will find me at the opposite end of the store.

One reason you will never find me downhill skiing is that I am deathly afraid of chair lifts.

Yeah the best thing to get over a physical fear, such as Heights or Spiders is to confront it within a controlled environment, many people I know with similar phobias have found this works for them

Become a Police Officer

I recommend checking out 2G1C to the original poster.

Has no effect on me, other than disgusting me and making me wonder how the producer originally intended to make a profit marketing an Adult film to such a small market

I'm not so paranoid about being sick, because I don't drink in excess, ever and I avoid questionable things like dodgy food, its more the fear of catching something, like if I see puke in the streets or someone I know mentions they or someone close to them was feeling sick

As for other phobias, well i'm not really scared of much else, I'm not keen on Balloons, but I wouldn't really call it a phobia, I just feel uneasy around them, not because of the noise they make, but the uncertainty of them, especially if someone is squeezing them and they look like they are about to burst, silly I know but it makes me uncomfortable

I have a slight fear of heights (I will not sit by the window on an airplane, and I always pull the shutter down), and a more pronounced claustrophobia. Also, I'm a bit of a hypochondriac.

Not quite Reginald Barclay-like, but getting there.

*shivers* Since I lift through the real Noro-virus last year that had me in bed for 2 weeks...well or lets say in the bathroom ;) and another week on very shaky legs I can understand why you want to avoid getting that. I try to keep my distance when possible or desinfect my hands fastly as well (as in a social job it is of course not always possible to keep the distance), when someone comes my way, that has Noro or some of the lesser evil, but still bad enough, viruses.

I am phobic when it comes to cars or other such dangerous things that drive around on the worlds streets. This can be very annoying, especially when it comes to "job-search" or choosing a place for living. I love the country-side, but I cannot live there, when I can´t get anywhere from there without a car.

The best thing for vomiting is Emetrol. It's a syrup you can get at most drug stores, and it does wonders. It eases even the most severe nausea in 15 minutes flat. One spoonful of that and you are good to go!

As for my irrational fear, it's the telephone. Every time it rings my heart thumps so hard I feel it will burst out of my chest and fly around the room. I don't mind talking on the phone to most people, I'm just so used to the phone being the source of the worst news. I never answer if I don't know the number, and only perhaps half the time when I do know the caller -- even if it's family or friends. I usually just make calls out.

I used to put songs as my ringtones, but had to stop because then whenever that song came on the radio or I tried to listen to it on my iPod, I'd go into those same preliminary stages of panic as I did when the phone rang. Unless I am expecting some very urgent call, I keep my ringer off at almost all times and just check every few hours to see if I've missed anyone.

But sometimes your body needs to vomit! It doesn't vomit just for the hell of it. It vomits because it has something inside it that it desperately wants to get out.

Emetrol doesn't prevent that kind of vomiting. ;)
