This is really shocking news. The drug-overdose report isn't confirmed, but this does feel like Heath Ledger all over again. Why do we tolerate an entertainment industry that puts creative talent under so much stress that they're driven to drug abuse over and over again? We need to find a way to reform the system -- and maybe reform the way we in the audience treat and talk about actors, often forgetting that they're human beings with vulnerabilities of their own.

The thing is, Mockingjay Part 1 & 2 have been shooting back-to-back since September and aren't completed yet. How much of Hoffman's material they've already shot is unknown at present.

Fuck. What a great actor to lose. What other great movies he could have made....

We need to get better with mental health in this country and this is another reminder. Still reeling from the news.

The first movie I thought of when I just found out the news was his role in Twister. It was a fun movie that wasn't award worthy or anything like that, but I really liked his role in that film, as well as Moneyball. He will be missed. :(

Aw man. Hoffman was one of my favorite actors. This is just shocking and depressing to me. :(

I've just read the NY Post's article and apparently the needle was still in his arm when he was found. This really sucks on so many levels. He was one of the greatest actors on this planet. To see how he throws this incredible talent away because of drugs makes me angry. Even worse if he actually started to fight his addiction. Still, it's also very sad. Must be horrible for the family.

"The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what we share with someone else when we're uncool."

One of Cameron Crowe's best lines in Cameron Crowe's best movie, and Hoffman sold it perfectly.

I wasn't aware that he had problems with drugs. It's a punch to the gut to see the results of addiction come into the open so suddenly again.

Yep. I've seen him in so many great performances, but I always go back to when he played Dusty in Twister. That was my favorite role of his. Such a shame that he's gone, and won't be able to bring any more wonderful characters to life. :(

Maybe sometime, but until he's good and ready, may he play the hell out of many more awesomely f'ed up roles in Valhalla's theatres. :(

Sometimes the smallest roles were the most fun. Rest in peace, Achiever.

Just gutted. :( He was good in everything he did, even silly films like Twister. One of the few actors of this generation who could really be called great.

Well, shit. I don't follow celebrities' private lives so I had no idea he had that kind of problem. When you saw his name in the credits, you knew you'd get something a little extra special. I'll miss seeing him.

Man, what a shame. He was terrific in everything he did, but my favorites roles of his would probably be Doubt, Capote, and, yes, MI:3, where he played one of the best villains ever.

^ My thoughts exactly :(. So sad and so tragic. The man was really talented. Any human issues aside, he was a really good actor. May he RIP. Condolences go out to his family and friends. He'll be missed.

Wherever you go, there you are.
It's being reported that he was in the apartment with screenwriter David Katz working on a script. Katz was the one who found him dead. Thank God it wasn't his wife or one of his young children who found him.
