Talk about the lastest New Voyages/Phase II episode Blood and Fire here!

Yep. As soon as it's fully released. Trickling it out on YouTube does kind of put a crimp in their usual argument of "We'll delay release if we have to in order to get the highest quality result."

Added a poll. I was on the set during some of the filming of this particular episode in June of 2007, so I'm excited to see how it turned out!

Trickling it out... Nope. I am on the east coast, my post team is on the west. I awoke this morning to a corrupt file that I cannot distribute, when they are up and functioning it will be fixed and released.

Thanks. :) I'm glad that, while this release is my website headline today,:bolian: I recommended people actually wait a few days to down load it. :techman: I'm excited, though, I've got to admit it...

Am I right in thinking this was filmed at the same time as p1, but the wait was for them to finish the post production?

I thought part 1 was very well acted and shot, so I really look forward to this.

Yes, Parts 1 and 2 were shot together as one production for fourteen days in June 2007. From a post-production standpoint, we probably could have worked on both halves simultaneously--and then released both halves a bit closer together two years after our "World Enough and Time" episode. But we couldn't in good conscience make people wait to see Part 1 simply because Part 2 wasn't done yet. But I think even we were surprised that it ended up being almost a year between Parts 1 and 2; I think we were expecting more like a three to six month time frame for Part 2. But, it's here finally; that's the important thing.

I don't think the snarkiness is really called for.

You guys are getting better all the time. I enjoyed this very much, thanks James & Greg (and everybody else at P2)!

Props for Bobby Rice (Ens. Kirk). I preferred Part 1.

[XXX] There were lots of audio issues where it was clear the audio wasn't looped later in a studio. Spock talks and there's static, Kirk talks and it's crystal clear in the same shot. You could hear the creeking of the set floor boards as well. [/XXX] (As clarified later, I mistook "temp soundtrack" to mean just the music. Apologies for the misunderstanding.)

Part 2 seemed to have a rapid jump where one moment they're talking about needing a volunteer and the next camera shot here comes on off the turbo lift. There were times where the bridge was far too crowded.

Overall it felt like Part 2 needed to be shored up in the dialog, [XXX in audio recording XXX] and tighter editing.

The space effects were great. I wasn't too impressed a particular shot of the worms flowing past a doorway which appeared to be an all virtual set. The worms looked better in Part 1 also.

I'll watch again when the [XXX "music" XXX] audio is final.

*** SPOILER WARNING ***

I "knew" how this was going to end but I had hoped Kirk would get a happy ending with Alex. It's bad enough, in gay cinema, gays die either by their own hand or someone else's. Even in Trek, they don't get to live Happily Ever After.

Dru,
We made it clear on our site that None of the audio is final in the last three acts.
That was the price we paid for getting it out yesterday. It will all be finished in the next few days and the acts will be replaced. As to a Gay character living happily ever after in this Trek, Peter is still here and has a Terrific future. The first part of the next episode arrives later today... I suggest you keep watching.

Dru,

Thanks for the feedback. It's always welcomed and we always listen and take it to heart.

As James indicated, the sound wasn't completely done on the last three acts before we felt obligated to get the episode posted. They'll be replaced in the next few days with a version with the final sound. We thought we had announced our disclaimers loudly enough, but I guess we missed you.

The "static" you hear towards the end is a torrential rainfall on the tin roof of our studio. But you're right: we need to loop more dialog and take out the creaking of our plywood floors and, well, other sound stuff.

It is a mixed story--with great sadness but with much joyousness. In the end, it's David Gerrold's story and he can tell the story the way he wants. I think there are indeed too many stories with LGBT characters that don't end Happily Ever After. But I think David (or any writer) needs to not develop some kind of Reaction Formation and end up shying away from the story that he really wants to tell and that speaks to him personally simply because it seems trite. Far be it from me and the rest of the team to tell David Gerrold that his story didn't end the way it "should have" ended.

And as James alluded to, while we are Star Trek and not The Peter Kirk Show, the truth is we're not done with Peter Kirk and more adventures and a measure of happiness await him.

Dru...

IMO the ending isn't a "gay" formula.. it's a TOS forumula. As soon as I heard Peter ask Kirk to marry he and Alex, I knew it wouldn't end well. EVERY time Kirk tries to marry someone ONE of them ends up dead!!! (This goes for all Trek captains, with the happy exception being O'Brien.)

I always find it amazing that people forget the various TOS episodes that did not have a happy ending. That was one thing I enjoyed about TOS over many other series (Trek or otherwise) - the fact that the trials, failures, or simply hard decisions of picking the best of two bad outcomes; is something decently portrayed in TOS stories.

This story had two bad outcomes, which were chosen over the potentially far worse outcomes that were weighed out. To me, that makes it the most excellent Trek.

I'm waiting for y'all to get the sound right to download this and watch it. I'm guessing it will make my list of "Quick Pick Treasures" from everything I've been hearing about it... but I want only the final version for that. Those are the fan films I try to get Fan Film Newbies to watch first. They are, in my opinion, all as good as the best of Pro Trek... and OK, I admit it, better than JJA Trek. Or, as I recently explained it to somebody... they are all just a bar or two above perfect. (Well World Enough and Time is about five bars above perfect...)
