Peri

Nicola Bryant is gorgeous, and isn't a bad actress, but Peri was not a great companion, too whiny and her accent was atrocious. Personally when she played Miss Brown in the Stranger videos wearing more clothes and using her (I assume) natural accent, I found her way hotter. Peri's just a bit obvious.

I do like the pic with her and Davison though :)

Wasn't a fan of Peri on the show - too whiny and annoying. Not the worst companion in the show but not far off.

Nicola Bryant is great though and with the stronger material she's been given by Big Finish I've come to appreciate Peri a lot more.

But, let's face it, Sarah Jane was kinda whiny in the old days, but did a great job in SJA.

Got a confession to make: Nicola Bryant was what first got me seriously interested in investigating Doctor Who. True story. DWM did a cover story on her and I went "whoa" and that got me to buy the magazine and read on about the show. I'd known of it, of course, and had seen a few episodes here and there, but she was my "gateway drug" to a degree into the Whoniverse.

I didn't have too many problems with the character, or her performance. I do think they made a mistake trying to make her American (I didn't find out Nicola was actually British and the whole American thing was a put-on till about 1991). But all told I thought she was fine, though my favorite on-screen work by Nicola were the BBV productions Summoned by Shadows, etc - as well as Airzone Solution. Though her best work as Peri is by far Peri and the Piscon Paradox which was released last year by Big Finish.

Hard to believe Nicola turns 50 this year. I have my fingers crossed that maybe the TV show will adopt the Big Finish continuity and allow her to reprise Peri for an episode and give the character proper on-screen closure after the mess that was made of her departure.

I remember hearing she would have prefered to be killed off-and then stay dead. But TPTB brought her back only to make her a consort to Brian Blessed! Surely the TV show could offer better closure for her and her character.

Except for a few stories (She and Davison worked well), I was never a big fan of the character. I still think she got a raw deal with her departure. I don't blame the actress though.

If they'd left it with her ending up with Sil's comrade's brain in her head it could have actually been one of the best companion ends ever! Unfortunately they screwed it up like they screwed most things up then!

I would say Sarah Jane was a lot more pro-active in her stories than Peri ever was.

I'm not a massive fan of Sarah Jane either though.

And, if script was good, and Nicola had the acting muscles, and the Director directed it properly, it could've been really cool to see her and Sil show up in a later story as enemies of the Doctor

We've had Companions that were sketchy in the Beginning (Turlough, amongst others, I'm lookin' at you) and became loyal, The Doctor has been forced to travel/work with enemies, but, I don't recall there ever being a Loyal Companion that became an enemy, that could really be a mind blower

I'm a huge Sarah Jane fan. My point was more about the actresses doing a better job with some maturity & better writing.

Sarah Jane seemed more capable during her time with the Third Doctor than the Fourth. Her very first story had her leading the charge but in a few episodes with the Fourth Doctor she really came across as the screaming damsel in distress.

As for Peri... Seems the general consensus is that Nicola is beautiful (which she absolutely is) but that Peri is annoying. That's about right in my books. Still, Peri had one of the worst fates ever for a companion.

Dr. Elizabeth Klien.

A NAZI Scientist from an alternative 1950s where the Germany won World War II. She travelled with 7 for "possibly" years, since there seemed to be a great deal of time happening inbetween the five adventures on record. For most intents and purposes she was the Doctors prisoner more so than companion because he believed that if free, she would move heaven and earth to re-reverse the out come of World War II and put Hitler back in power... Like the scorpion and the frog, when the opportunity presented itself, despite being bosom buddies with the Gallifreian, she turned on him when he least expected it, and everything went to hell, because that was her nature.

Ah, extended Universe, wasn't aware of her. I guess I should have specified "TV Show" :alienblush:

Anyway, Peri. Probably my favourite companion (just beating out Turlough) post Romana I. Good dynamic with the Sixth Doctor. It wasn't like with Tegan and Davo, where she'd say "Strewth, you useless cunt, take me back to Heathrow" every few minutes and he'd respond by pissing his pyjamas. Peri was strong enough to counter the Sixth Doctor's arrogance, but at the same time reassuring when necessary. Very beautiful too, of course.

All right Peri fans, who is getting The Caves of Androzani:Special Edition DVD when it comes out in North America tomorrow (the 14th)? For those elsewhere who may already have a copy, how do you rate it? :)

Holy crap! I didn't know they did any sequels to "Colditz." I must check those out, especially since "Colditz" is my favorite McCoy audio.
