Pegg updates on script

I think others have mentioned it, but while Pegg may have not worked that way before, that is typically how studios work, when they are more directly involved. With a franchise such as Star Trek, it is rare for writers to have carte blanche over the story.

Secondly, and for me more important, Lin's input does not equal bad or ignoring characters. Lin might be known for the Fast and Furious series but that doesn't mean he is automatically bringing that game to the Star Trek franchise. F&F is as much an ensemble piece that centers around characters and their relationships as cars and 'plosions.

I just watched the second Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. What is this "Star Trek" you all are babbling about?

It's hard not to derail the thread, but I've just watched it too. I think it looks like they could have knocked it out of the park with this one. Buzzing off Han and Chewie at the end.

wow that SW trailer is a big deal. That bit where the Falcon flies into the remains of the Star Destroyer pursued by Ties was abit like STIDs 'will fit!'

I worry about that because from Pegg's last interviews it seems that they are writing a script around the requests the studio and director make, including what seem to be finding ways to shoehorn stuff.

IOW, they're making a commercial film.

Designed to sucker lots of people, like me, in to bring their family and spend lots of money to see it over and over. So far, it's working.

Hasn't nearly all Trek been written that way, good and bad?

TWOK was made from Frankenstein-ing together half-a-dozen studio-commissioned scripts in less than a week. The studio requested the Klingons be given focus in DS9, giving us a good chunk of the supporting cast and a wealth of subplots. Back in the 60's, it was the studio pushing for at least token diverse casts (regardless of what Gene claimed). Khan was picked as II's villain by the producer. TBBW's cliffhanger came from back stage contract negotiations. Etc etc to infinity.

Sure, sometimes they tipped their hand too far or in the wrong direction. That just something that happens with nearly any long-running commercial property, especially one which has so many people working on it. A lot of crappy Star Trek has come from writers with a 'vision' as well. I'm looking at you 'Up the Long Ladder,' with your terrible handling of abortion.

The worry seems to be about the typical studio interference that ruins, rather than helps, a film. It amazes me how the "professionals" all too often don't learn from history. They need to protect their investments, but they are sometimes utterly stupid.

On the other hand, movie studios are run by people who have a lot experience making commercially viable films, so the idea that 'studio interference' is by definition a bad thing seems a little off to me.

A handy "not my fault" card that can be played when a film doesn't perform as well as a director would like.

I have heard of situations where the script, after being written, was re-written at the insistence and direction of horizontal and/or vertical individuals involved in the creation of a film or tv episode, or serial.

JJ Abrams and Robert Orci are listed as producers of this film, so I expect the next film will bear similarities to the last two films.

If "typical studio interference" in fact "hurts, not helps" movies the studios would go broke. There's this naive "learning through anecdotes picked up by reading interviews" idea that successful and popular films usually get made by perseverance and trickery whereby Talent somehow overcomes studio intransigence.

Reminded me of it flying into the asteroid cave in Empire, but yeah, that too.

Wonder if Pegg crapped his pants when he saw the new teaser. The Bar for his project must have suddenly seemed much higher.

No worries though, he's a smart chap. ST3 will be awesome.

absolutely. Trek is going to have to raise its game considerably post TFA

one other thing ive just realised. Ford at the end of the trailer - like Nimoy at the end of one of the Trek 2009 trailers..
