Pegg updates on script

At first I almost was like 'poor Shatner' but then

"But the director that I talked to was fired, so somebody else is at the helm, so I have no idea."

He has no chill

sounds like its gone from being some kind of time bending Days of Future Past type plot incorporating Shatner as either as Kirk Prime or Old Pine Kirk, to being a standalone deep space exploration thing for the JJ crew only

"Guardians of the Galaxy" proves that a deep space sci-fi movie without Earth in danger can work and people will go see it. I've longed to have a "Star Trek" movie like that, where it's in the depths of space and has nothing to do with Earth or time travel.

If so my interest has gone up considerably.

Plus they already did the whole DOFP past thing with ST09. Heck DOFP probably took inspiration from ST09, and the new Terminator movie seems to be as well.

All this kind of bullshit Orci & Lindelof & Co spouted out as if it was a matter of fact isn't true. Their imagination is extremely limited, and that's why they always say "the audience wouldn't get this", "the audience would not want that".

They already had to jump through tons of plot-related hoops just to get OG Spock into this timeline, which I was fine with because it worked well in-context. Plus seeing the two Spocks interact was really fun. But if they keep crowbarring TOS characters/actors into this, then it's going to get really old really fast. Plus it takes the focus off of the current cast, which is were it should be.

I doubt that those films took inspiration from Trek. There's nothing going on there, plot-wise, that Trek invented.

But if they keep crowbarring TOS characters/actors into this ...
That's not "crowbarring." Crowbarring is taking the established navigator character and putting him in charge of the engine room, instead of using a character who's a engineer, to prevent said navigator from having nothing to do in the movie.

That's crowbarring. Prime Spock was a integral part of ST Eleven, and he was a small but welcome part of Darkness. If Prime Kirk is integral to the plot, then the writers will have done their jobs correctly.

it takes the focus off of the current cast, which is were it should be
The focus should be on entertaining and delighting the audience, on moving the story forward, if the inclusion of Shatner facilitates that, then he belongs.

:)

How is giving an establish character something to do "crowbarring"?

that's true, but Trek09 brought successfully rebooting a franchise via time travel into the mainstream. XMen and Terminator took notice

Maybe in small part, but Days Of Future Past was already an X-Men story older than Wrath Of Khan, and Terminator is a series with its entire premise rooted in time travel, so :p

yes indeed but ST09 really brought the time travel reboot into the blockbuster arena showing how successful it could be done, like Batman Begins had brought the origin reboot to the fore

Seems Pegg and Burk weren't too fond of the Orci/Payne/McKay script.
That only gives me very high hopes for the new movie. Now, if they can only avoid lying blatantly to our faces ("no, Khan really isn't in this movie!"), they'll have won me over completely.
Ironically for you, Pegg was the only one who outright lied. I support any abuse he gives the spoilers among us. The others were merely coy, a disingenuous personality trait of marketing I really dislike. It left me with a positive opinion of Pegg and a negative opinion of the others. But he had me at Shaun of the Dead.
