Pegg or Mcgillion

Well, I didn't like alternate Scott. Very out of character. McGillion might have done a better job, maybe.

Either way, they really should airlock the puppet. What were they thinking? :vulcan:

McGillion and Chris Doohan vied for the role of Scottie. Pegg was great as Scottie, and the other two made cameos in the movie. I think everything worked out for the best in the end.

Anybody would've been better than Pegg.

Well maybe not anybody, but he sure didn't strike me as a very good choice for the role. Or maybe somebody should have told him he's playing a specific character and not to just wing it and play the role as a variation of the characters he always plays.

I suspect McGillion would have been a better choice simply because he'd bother to try to play the role and not just do a schitck. He already has that theatrically hang-dog air that Scotty drags around with him everywhere - you know, the way he's putting it on, partly, and knows he is, and knows everyone knows and doesn't even bother to disguise it. Pegg completely missed that facet of Scotty. And he was far too manic. There was always a deliberately slug-like aspect to the guy, again, very deliberate - his defense against that hectoring chihuahua of a captain.

It's like Abrams or someone just decided that there's nothing to Scotty except a few surface facts - he's an engineer and has the accent - so it doesn't matter how he's played. Sure, he isn't as well defined as many of the others, but I didn't expect Abrams to just give up on the guy.

Agreed. I guess that was the Star Wars crap that JJ threatened to throw at us. :p

LOVED Pegg in the part....much better than James Doohan for sure.

Considering that Doohan's mannerisms and quirks largely created Scotty, that's an absurd statement. :rommie:

Scotty has been played for comic relief for a long time, reaching a pinnacle (if you want to call it that) in TFF. Pegg's Scotty was the first time in decades that the character was played for comic relief well.

I think McGillion as Scotty is a fan wank idea (and I know I'm going to get pelted with tomatoes for that)

His character on Atlantis, though Scottish, was a mostly skitterish doctor. I haven't seen him in anything else, but based on Atlantis, I wouldn't want him as Scotty.

i liked pegg a lot better then i thought i would.
the transporter scene when they are getting ready to beam out especially reminded me of doohan's scotty.
the thing of it is we saw less of him then any of the others and a large part of it was off ship in unusual circumstances.

another thing i liked was the scene where he gives the description of how hard it would be to get warp beaming right.

now in future movies i hope to see more of things like scotty when he is in command of the ship ect but this is a lot better then we sometimes got in the last movies.

That element of Scotty you're talking about doesn't exist until the movies. It's not there in TOS and is completely absent from pretty much every novel up until the movie era.

Scotty is actually tougher in TOS, likes to drink and likes to fight. I suspect that will be more apparent in the next one.

If they keep Pegg, it's going to constrain them in the future. They'll either need to seriously tone down his heavy-handed overacting, or they'll have to avoid using any plots where Scotty plays a key role.

It's sad because Scotty was one of my favorite characters on TOS. He was sort of an anchor, without all the drama and hangups of the other main characters, except of course that he loved the Enterprise.

The producers have really boxed themselves into a corner here by turning Scotty into slapstick - this movie survived the error because there is so much else going on and it's not such a big problem; future movies might not.

I know this was accidental for you to spell it that way but I couldn't help but :guffaw: :guffaw: at the thought of all those guys running around the set dressed as small black long haired dogs. :guffaw: :guffaw: ;)

Chris Doohan was one of the transporter operators, wasn't he?

Agreed.

I thought Pegg did a fine job as Scotty. I think he could pull off the full range in future films. Scotty's experience as a command officer won't be impossible for him to do either. I can definitely see Pegg's Scotty being badass when the need arises.

I was worried about pegg, not because he is english, but never thought of him as a sc-fi type of a guy ,loved his films thou.I do think we will see the best of scotty in the next film as he is in his first love as cheif engineer of the enterprise, which will bring out the best in scotty.

I don't think it's too tough. It's really about the lines written for him. Pegg leans toward comedy but I'm sure given the proper motivation he can play a scene more serious.

Not sure I want them to do that, though. I like him as comic relief. Scotty is kind of a meh character anyway

Yep. I like Pegg and have watched about everything he's been in. Comedy is clearly his strong point, but he has some range. I'm not concerned that he won't be able to put his back into whatever serious scenes they give him. And, he is one of 7 main actors, with the new Big Three likely carrying most of the weight. I'm pretty sure he'll be able to pull off the 4 or 5 minutes of serious acting they ask per movie.

Oops on the little dog! He played the tribble. They dyed his fur for the role.

Chris Doohan was the transporter operator sitting next to Pegg-as-Scotty.
