Paul Wesley's incarnation of James T. Kirk

I quite like the fact that thus far Kirk hasn't brought up the family connection. Certainly he's aware of it. Everyone knows about Khan Noonien-Singh.

We actually know very little of James Kirk's history except for the small glimpses occasionally seen during TOS. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his character explored in SNW.

Question for those so adamant about having any appearance of James Kirk on SNW:

Why not? Do you dislike the character that much? There's absolutely nothing in TOS that precludes Kirk from having adventures with Pike, or even joining his crew.

It sometimes comes across as gatekeeping: "That's just not what SNW is supposed to be about." I trust TPTB for SNW, and they have earned a great deal of latitude from me. If they have stories to tell featuring Kirk, I would love to see them. In particular, I am really enjoying the glimpses into his family history, and his relationship with Sam. I would love to see both Kirk boys along with their parents in a future episode.

SNW is a prequel in the truest sense of the word, and seeing what the TOS crew were up to during this time period is fair game.

It's about Pike. And what do people talk about? Kirk.

It's like the worst game of "Where's Waldo/Wally to me.

Do you dislike the character that much?
No.

Ok. I have no objections to canon or canoncity. I am biased towards wanting Pike and his crew. Not asking "Where is Kirk."

Yes. There are roles for Kirk in Star Trek other than as captain of the Enterprise, just as there are roles for Spock other than as his first officer.

Really? In every episode thread I see people talking about the episode. The only people I see constantly obsessing about James T. Kirk appearing are those people who have a problem with James T. Kirk appearing on any episode of SNW.
Sorry, it's a sore spot. When he appeared last season people are like "Don't worry about it, it's brief, it's ok." Now it's "Kirk is back. Oh, he is romancing La'an. Oh, those Kirk brothers. We should see Kirk Sr. Wouldn't that be hilarious! Let's see if Hemsworth can make it."

Yeah, it's a pet peeve. It's an irrational one. But it's hard to get over when I was dismissed for thinking Kirk would be appearing more after his appearance last season.

Yes, I am aware that he can serve the story more than just as Captain Kirk. I just don't care for it.

And of course YNMV, but I personally am enjoying young Lt. Kirk, and the way they have him starting and building relationships with other characters we know will be under his command in the next 7 years or so. So much better than having them pass each other on a corridor and exchanging salutes, or saying a sentence or two and Kirk later saying something like: "I knew I wanted him/her on my crew as soon as they passed me in the corridor..."

And no, the way they are doing it in no way overshadows Pike as a lead character. But as I said, YMMV.

It's not black or white. It's not "No Kirk." It's just not for me. I didn't want the brief exchange and salutes but I also don't want this fixation on him either.

Yes, my mileage varies but annoyingly it's basically like "tough shit; he's here." Well, I get that but I'm not going to sit there an act like it's the best thing.

The fixation seems to come from other fans. You can’t really control that.

Not picking on you, Fireproof78, just curious:

It seems as though your assumption was that Kirk wouldn't be here. Why did you assume that?

I sometimes wonder if people are reading Shatner's personality into the character of James Kirk, and not wanting him around for that reason.

I didn't want Kirk showing up at all or if he had to not until late in the series' run. That said I'm satisfied with Paul Wesley's portrayal of Kirk. I didn't ask for it but for what it is I can live with it and he's grown on me.
